BUDAPEST, EXPLORING the HOLOCAUST of HUNGARIAN JEWS, the 'SHOES IN THE DANUBE' MEMORIAL ✡️
SUBSCRIBE: - Here's a very sad (and not as well known memorial) that forms part of the Holocaust dark chapter in our history. Jews killed by members of the nationalist Arrow Cross party at the end of 1944 and the beginning of 1945. Vic Stefanu, vstefanu@yahoo.com. Hungary is a landlocked country in Central Europe. It is situated in the Carpathian Basin and is bordered by Slovakia to the north, Romania to the east, Serbia to the south, Croatia to the southwest, Slovenia to the west, Austria to the northwest, and Ukraine to the northeast. The country's capital and largest city is Budapest.
Budapest, Hungary’s capital, is bisected by the River Danube. Its 19th-century Chain Bridge connects the hilly Buda district with flat Pest. A funicular runs up Castle Hill to Buda’s Old Town, where the Budapest History Museum traces city life from Roman times onward. Trinity Square is home to 13th-century Matthias Church and the turrets of the Fishermen’s Bastion, which offer sweeping views.

WHY ARE THERE SHOES ON THE EDGE OF THE DANUBE?
This is one of Budapest’s Most Moving Memorials: Shoes on The Danube. Sculptors Gyula Pauer and Can Togay created a moving memorial that sits on the edge of the Danube river. Visitors will see 60 pairs of rusted period shoes cast out of iron. Different sizes and styles reflect how nobody was spared by the Arrow Cross party.

SHOES ON THE DANUBE BANK | Budapest, Hungary | The Fluffies Channel
Every time they have visited Budapest, Eric always told Christian that he wanted to see the shoe memorial by the Danube. In all his eight trips to Budapest, he has not seen the famous memorial. Well, they finally made it!
Shoes on the Danube Bank is a memorial in Budapest. Conceived by film director Can Togay, he created it on the east bank of the Danube River with sculptor Gyula Pauer to honor the people who were killed by fascist Arrow Cross militiamen in Budapest during World War II. It was installed in 2005.
People were ordered to take off their shoes at the edge of the Danube. They were then tied up in chains and a firing squad shot a few of the prisoners at close range in the back so that they fell into the river to be washed away. They did it here because it was easy to get rid of the bodies. Also, since they were tied up, fewer bullets were needed.
This was a common practice that occurred during 1944-1945.
There are 60 pairs of rusted shoes of the time period cast out of iron. The different sizes and styles show how nobody was spared: men, woman, children, elderly. Shoes were a huge commodity at the time.
“The shoes are attached to the stone embankment, and behind them lies a 40 meter long, 70 cm high stone bench. At three points are cast iron signs, with the following text in Hungarian, English, and Hebrew: To the memory of the victims shot into the Danube by Arrow Cross militiamen in 1944-45. Erected 16 April 2005. (Source: MTI, Saturday, April 16, 2005.)”

Dark Side of Budapest, House of Terror, Labyrinth, Dracula's Chamber, Shoes by the Danube, Hungary
As beautiful as the city of Budapest, Hungary is some of its unfortunate history tells a different tale, from the imprisonment of Count Dracula within the Buda Castle Labyrinth to the persecution of the Jews with the touching Shoes by the Danube tribute by the side of the River Danube. The House of Terror as much as sounding like a HHN Horror attraction is actually another poignant reminder of the atrocities of War. Budapest, Hungary 2018

I found a place where people gathered out of the window. The shoes on the banks of the Danube are a remembrance of Hungarian Jews slaughtered by fascists during World War II. Only 800 people were sacrificed on the Donau River. 60 pairs of rusty and faded shoes are celebrating them. I think it reminds me of what happened in the past. I was shocked at what happened to them and I should not get up again. I bring a lot of lessons to living people. Think of people standing there. How terrible is it that this has happened? Just watching, my heart aches. At that time the Jews flowed into the Danube, leaving only shoes. Someone who was the father of someone, the son of somebody, someone who was neighbors, but died without a break. There was a shoe that attracted the attention of the poisoned people. Very small shoes. The ruthlessness of the guns was no exception. My heart is so sick. It is very sad that this has happened just by ideology. The river that watched all the pain seems to say that there must be a better future with reflection that history must be remembered.

Budapest, Hungary - Shoes on the Danube Promenade HD (2013)
The Shoes on the Danube Promenade is a memorial concept by filmdirector Can Togay and was created by him and the sculptor Gyula Pauer on the bank of the Danube River in Budapest. It honors the Jews who were killed by fascist Arrow Cross militiamen in Budapest during World War II. They were ordered to take off their shoes, and were shot at the edge of the water so that their bodies fell into the river and were carried away. It represents their shoes left behind on the bank.
Budapest Jewish holocaust memorial
The Shoes on the Danube Promenade, created by Gyula Pauer and Can Togay, is a memorial on the bank of the Danube in Budapest. It is located on the Pest side of the Danube Promenade at the end of Szechenyi Street, about 300 m south of the Hungarian Parliament and near the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
Shoes on the Danube is a memorial to the people who fell victim to the Arrow Cross militiamen in Budapest and depicts their shoes left behind on the bank when they fell into the river after having been shot during World War II.
At first, during World War II, 250 coworkers of Wallenberg were working around the clock to prevent the Jewish population from being sent to concentration camps; this figure later rose to approximately 400. People, amongst whom Lars Ernster, Edith Ernster and Jacob Steiner can be counted, were housed at the Swedish Embassy in Budapest on Üllői Street 2-4 and 32 other buildings in Budapest that Wallenberg rented and then declared as extraterritorial to prevent the people housed in them from being sent to concentration camps.
On the night of January 8, 1945, all of the inhabitants of the building on Üllöi Street were rounded up and dragged away to the banks of the Danube by an Arrow Cross execution brigade from the city commandership. At midnight, Karoly Szabo and 20 policemen with drawn bayonets broke into the Arrow Cross house and rescued everyone there (see also historic frontpage 1947 newspaper). [2]. Among the people saved were Lars Ernster, who fled to Sweden and became a member of the board of the Nobel Foundation from 1977 to 1988, and Jacob Steiner, who fled to Israel and became a professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
Information from Jacob Steiner after he has read this page: On December 25, 1944, Jacob Steiner's father was shot dead by Arrow Cross militiamen on, falling into the Danube as a result. His father had been an officer in World War I and spent 4 years as a prisoner of war in Russia.[1]
