Volunteers helped evacuate at least 100 residents from Pervomaisk to Chuguev in Kharkov on Wednesday, in a bid to escape the escalating conflict in Ukraine.
Pervomaisk recently became the scene of fierce fighting between Ukrainian government and local anti-Kiev forces. Previously the same volunteers had worked for more than two months to get civilians out of Slavyansk and Lugansk to more secure areas in the country.
According to UN minimum estimates as of Saturday, some 1,129 people have been killed as a result of the Ukrainian conflict and 3,442 injured. The number of displaced since April is placed at over 100,000.

Kharkiv
Kharkiv (Ukrainian: Харків, pronounced [ˈxɑrkiw]), or Kharkov (Russian: Ха́рьков; IPA: [ˈxarʲkəf]), is the second-largest city of Ukraine. Located in the north-east of the country, it is the largest city of the Slobozhanshchyna historical region. The city was founded in 1654 and was a major centre of Ukrainian culture in the Russian Empire. Kharkiv was the first city in Ukraine to acknowledge Soviet power in December 1917 and became the first capital of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic until January 1935, after which the capital was relocated to Kiev. Kharkiv is the administrative centre of Kharkiv Oblast and the surrounding Kharkiv district.

Ukrainian Ground Forces
The Ukrainian Ground Forces (Ukrainian: Сухопутні Війська ЗСУ, Sukhoputni Viys’ka ZSU) are the land force component of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. They were formed from Soviet Ground Forces formations, units, and establishments, including three military districts (the Kiev, Carpathian, and Odessa Military Districts), that were on Ukrainian soil when the Soviet Union collapsed in 1990–92. Throughout the 1990s, Ukraine retained much Soviet-era army equipment. Since then, however, Ukraine has upgraded its Ground Forces with advanced additions from domestic engineering and modifications. Currently, the Ukrainian Ground Forces buys military equipment only from Russia and other CIS states, as well as locally producing some of their own equipment.
