Welcome Home: Discovery Shores Boracay
I’ve never felt so at home at resort before till my stay at Discovery Shores Boracay. All the personal touches and being called by name instead of Ma’am/Sir made all the difference. It is not surprising why this is one of the best places to stay at in Boracay.
Needless to say, I’ll be back!

Kalaw
MANILA, Philippines - For more than a decade, T.M. Kalaw St. in Manila has been the center of the seafaring industry. Kalaw is where the waiting sailors bunk at night, where cd's of singing sailors moaning about unfaithful women are sold, where booths manned by recruiters, trainers and government agents crowd the small plaza and spill into the sidewalk.
In a season of unemployment, Kalaw is where business still booms, and ship captains with Rolexes are hunted down by agencies to the tune of eight thousand dollars a month. The Philippines is among the top producers of maritime professionals in the international labor market, making up about a fifth of the 1.2 million seafarers worldwide. PRC chairperson Teresita Manzala says that the number of marine engineers rose from 47,000 in 2005 to 58,000 in 2010, while that of marine deck officers was up from 47,000 in 2005 to 63,000 in 2010. In 2011, 60, 121 registered Marine Engineers and a total of 69,015 registered Marine deck officers. Filipino sailors continue to be in high demand, but it is not the case for the hundreds of new cadets who march out of maritime school. Experience is key, and so are relationships.
The dream of every new sailor begins with an apprenticeship in a reputable liner, and it is only after the 6 month to a year service as a deck cadet that a sailor can hire on as a Ship's Officer with a salary of about a thousand dollars. On April and May every year, Kalaw floods with young men who march down the length of the sidewalks, carrying signs for job openings issued by their agencies. The cadets act as errand boys, recruiting for agencies, hoping for good will, while their backers--uncles, family friends, maybe a cousin or a brother in the industry--push with their contacts to take on their bright-eyed boys.
The cadet
Without a backer, says 22-year-old Jay Halongong, the P200,000 his family spent on his education would not matter, neither will the money he has spent for additional training. According to the Mariners Polytech training center, new graduates who undergo training spend from 4,300 to 6000 pesos. This increases depending on the type of training a seaman is required to undergo by a company. Most of the applicants are middle class, because of the investment necessary for a sailor's training.
Halongong's uncle has been his backer for years, encouraging him and his brother to choose maritime school because of the possibility of large future salaries. Halongong is the son of a former security guard and a seamstress. His father has been laid off, his mother is the family breadwinner. On 2010, after his graduation, Jay Halongong headed to Kalaw St. the same as all the other new cadets. He is of average height, and lanky, unlike the other more muscled seamen. He failed his medical exam that year, and decided to stop applying for apprenticeships.
Instead, Halongong too a job as a data encoder, bringing home five thousand pesos every fifteen days, an amount smaller than the allowance he would have received as an apprentice on a ship. His parents and uncles eventually told him to resign and return to Kalaw, where he now walks the length of the street, hoping to recruit a willing captain he could deliver to the agency door. He has been waiting months, and will probably wait more, but he has been promised a place, although his backer is hounding the agency. His uncle says he better be on a ship by the time his own makes for shore. Halongong hopes for an apprenticeship soon, before he hits 25 and is too old to be a Ship's Officer.
The nurse
Don Saavedra took up nursing because of the high demand while he was in college. That demand fizzled out when he graduated, and he never bothered to take his boards. Instead, Saavedra decided to be a seaman. He was rejected once because of his inexperience, pushing him to take the variety of recommended training programs available along Kalaw. Now he is back, fresh from his first international trip. It was easy to get his place, he said, once he had the training. His backer was a family friend. In two months, he will be back on the waters. For now, he hangs out in Kalaw, goes out with friends, and has showered his family with gifts. He saved a hundred thousand on this first trip, and he plans to make more.
The street
This is Kalaw, where sailors wait for their ship to come. The job is brutal, the risk is death, it is stark and lonely and has driven sons from their mothers and wives from husbands. But in a season of unemployment and rising costs, it is Kalaw where men come to hope. - Rappler.com

Manila, Philippines - The Journey - Part One
Had an amazing chance to visit my wife's side of the family. They are based in Manila and Pagsanjan, Philippines. A wonderful trip with amazing food and great experiences! This is part one of five!
Manila and It's Wonderful People - Sam Exotic Travels to Philippines 2005
My first trip to the Philippines was in April 2005, when I visited its capital, Manila. It is located on the eastern shore of Manila Bay on the largest and northernmost Philippine island, Luzon. While it has several historic landmarks, the highlight was meeting, talking to and photographing its beautiful people.
Philippines 2019 - Discovery Shores, Boracay
Boracay is a small island in the Philippines 7km long and 1km wide, located approximately 315 kilometres (196 miles) south of Manila and 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) off the northwest tip of Panay Island in Western Visayas region of the Philippines. Boracay has a populace of 32,267 individuals last recorded since February 2016. Boracay Island and its beaches have received awards from numerous travel publications and agencies.[Note 1] The island comprises the barangays of Manoc-Manoc, Balabag, and Yapak in the municipality of Malay, in Aklan Province. The island is administered by the Boracay Inter-agency Task Force. Apart from its white sand beaches, Boracay is also famous for being one of the world's top destinations for relaxation.[11][12] As of 2013 it was emerging among the top destinations for tranquility and nightlife.[13]
Boracay was awarded as the 2012 best island in the world from the international travel magazine Travel + Leisure.[14][15] In 2014, the resort island was at the top of the Best Islands in the World list published by the international magazine Condé Nast Traveler.[16] In 2016, Boracay headed the magazine's list of Top 10 destinations to watch.[17]
In April 2018 the Philippine Government decreed a 6-month closure of the island for tourists to undertake major renovation works, especially of the sewage system, which had become obsolete and insufficient.[18]. It re-opened in October 2018 with a set of new rules meant to address a variety of issues.[19][20]

5 MOST ICONIC Spots You MUST SEE in Coron, Philippines
Coron, Philippines is right up there with El Nido as the most popular destination in Palawan - The absolute paradise of a province on the western side of the Philippines.
After a 5-day Trip with Tao, I only had 48 hours to explore the area, and I took up half of that time yesterday diving the Japanese war ships of wwii.
So, today, I set out to experience some of the most iconic attractions just off shore.
As far as boat tours go in Coron, there’s a ton of different operators and you can negotiate price right here at the market where the captain’s start each morning.
You can jump on a group tour starting at about $20 bucks; which usually includes food and snorkel gear - but I decided to rent a private boat to take my time and go where I wanted.
For this option, I negotiated a price of about $50 US dollars.
Our first goal for the day is to visit what’s said to be the cleanest and clearest lake in all of Asia - Kayangan Lake.
The next stop on our voyage is to another famous spot called the Twin Lagoons - Two absolutely breathtaking shallow saltwater lagoons that are connected by an underwater channel and narrow rock pathway.
One of the best aspects choosing the private tour is that when you get hungry, you can stop whenever and wherever you want.
Barracuda Lake, I’m told, is normally the least crowded of the three stops. Most groups skip this spot because to experience it’s true uniqueness, you really need to scuba dive.
It’s actually a brackish lake which means it’s a mix of salt and fresh water.
I’m told that until you reach about 14 meters down it’s a cool, clear freshwater and then after that it turns into a warm salt water.
Unfortunately, I was pressed for time, so I just explored the incredible underwater rock formations and met the little creatures who live here.
and despite the name, I didn’t spot any barracudas.
Back on dry land I rush up the 700 plus steps to Mt. Tapyas for sunset, and to get a nice view of town from above.
Maquinit Hot Springs is one of the very few saltwater hot springs in the world. it’s a 30-minute tricycle ride from the town proper of Coron along a rough, curvy road.
It’s said that the water gets heated by a volcano and springs up into the two-tiered pool all surrounded by a cool wooded area, dotted with picnic tables and some relaxing mood lighting.
The water’s pretty hot, so coming at night, when it’s a little cooler outside was a good choice.
I’m glad I’m able to sneak in last minute, and it was a great spot to finish a perfect day here in Coron, Philippines.
