Exploring Sussex: Shoreham Fort
I know I had a brief walk around Shoreham Fort recently, but I went back to meet, Gary Baines, the chairman of the charity that is dedicated to restore and protect the fort.
Gary took me inside the the famous tunnel, to inspect the canon he keeps down there and gave me a better understanding of the fort's history and the plans for the future.
Check out the Shoreham Fort website:
In the 1850’s, when French intentions caused apprehension, it was then decided to man and defend the harbour mouth with a permanent fort. The newly constructed harbour entrance, as it was then, was selected as the site for Shoreham Fort – just on the wide shingle spit immediately to the west. This was so that the guns could defend and command the harbour entrance, its approaches and the beach.

Walks in England: Shoreham Fort and Harbour
My England Walks take me to Shoreham Fort at the harbour mouth at Shoreham by Sea in West Sussex. In the 1850s, the English were worried about invasion from France and decided to fortify the coastline. They build a redoubt fortress at Littlehampton and Shoreham complete with a Carnot Wall.
I take a brief walk around the fort and then on to the west harbour wall.

Places to see in ( Shoreham by Sea - UK )
Places to see in ( Shoreham by Sea - UK )
Shoreham-by-Sea is a seaside town and port in West Sussex, England. Shoreham by Sea is bordered to its north by the South Downs, to its west by the Adur Valley and to its south by the River Adur and Shoreham Beach on the English Channel.
Shoreham by Sea lies in the middle of the ribbon of urban development along the English south coast, approximately equidistant from the city of Brighton and Hove to the east and the town of Worthing to the west. Shoreham covers an area of 984.88 hectares.
Old Shoreham dates back to pre-Roman times. St Nicolas' Church, inland by the River Adur, is partly Anglo-Saxon The name of the town has an Old English origin. The town and port of New Shoreham was established by the Norman conquerors towards the end of the 11th century.
Shoreham Beach, to the south of the town, is a shingle spit deposited over millennia by longshore drift, as an extension to Lancing parish in the west. This blocks the southerly flow of the River Adur which turns east at this point to discharge into the English Channel further along the coast at a point that has varied considerably over time.
Shoreham Airport lies to the west of the main town and has been in private ownership since 2006. It is the UK's oldest licensed airport still in operation and has a 1936 Grade II*-listed Art Deco terminal building. The town is served by Shoreham-by-Sea railway station, located on the West Coastway Line. Local bus services are provided by the Brighton & Hove bus company, Stagecoach South and a local town route is operated by Compass Travel. Shoreham Tollbridge crosses the River Adur in the west of the town. This bridge is a Grade II* listed building and was the last Sussex toll bridge in use.

Exploring the River Adur Estuary at Shoreham-by-Sea
Julia is back out walking and brings her lovely newborn, Joseph, to join me for a stroll along the river Adur just north of Shoreham. We are exploring the estuary with its airport adjacent, World War Two pill boxes and the old toll bridge.
There is also the monument erected in memory of the eleven men who died as a result of the air disaster in 2015 at the Shoreham Air Show that year.

Walks in Sussex: Exploring Shoreham Harbour in West Sussex
Martin Snow takes me around the historic locks at Shoreham Harbour. Shoreham-by-Sea enjoys a unique location, bordered on the north by the South Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, on the west by the open valley of the River Adur and on the south by the river and Shoreham Beach. Such close proximity to the South Downs, river and coast make Shoreham-by-Sea a very desirable place to live.

A Tour of Newhaven Fort's Sercet bits - Shoreham Fort
On the 11th May 2013, a band of Shoreham Fortonians went on a road trip. We visited the Sompting Model Train Exhibition, Newhaven Fort, Tidemills and Seaford Martello tower.
Here we are being shown around parts of Newhaven Fort which are closed off to the general public. They are the Counterscarp Rooms which were used to defend the ditch around the fort. They were later used in World War 2 as home of the RAF boat search and rescue.
