According to tradition, the school was founded during the Heian era (794-1185) by general Sakanoue no Tamuramaro, who received the techniques Musō Kanze Ryū after praying at the Shimizu Kanzeon sanctuary.

Women Kumi Embu by Takahashi Asuka Seikenshi, 4th Dan & Yamamoto Nozomi, 3rd Dan.
The Kagamibiraki is a traditional ceremony which translates to opening the mirror (symbolically).
Taking its roots in the Shogunate, it is strongly linked to Budo practice and it is natural that the Budo Hajime (first practice of the year) is celebrated at the same time.
At the Nippon Budokan, the ceremony is held at the beginning of January and consists in:
- The Kagamibiraki, with a historical reconstruction (in armor).
- Budo Demonstrations (by the 9 official Budo).
- Budo Hajime (first practice of the year, all practitioners present can practice).
- The Oshiruko kai. “Oshiruko” is a traditional and popular sweet azuki bean paste soup with mochi (which symbolize the sharing of the mochi that was broken before during the ceremony).

Founded by Takagi Shigetoshi around 1660, who was born as second son and studied diverse martial arts from an early age. His father's words be strong as a weeping willow because tall trees will break were so important to him that they were to become the source of what he was to call himself and his school. Further, he became so famous for his herculean strength that till today, there are legends told about him in Oshu. (Northern part of Japan.)
This school composites diverse Budo, emphasizing Jujutsu, Bojutsu and Kodachi-Jutsu, focusing on simple, direct and effective techniques.

Karatedo - The art of empty handed combat
Presented is one of the Kata of the Shotokan-Ryu Karatedo. Both fists are put together along the edge of the hand, and with a movement, that can be described as pushing aside clouds, the partner’s attack is blocked. This motion is followed by an intense exchange of techniques of offense and defense that further evolve, much like clouds in a thunderstorm. The techniques are freely adapted and newly created, throwing the partner with a Mawashi-Geri, rotating with a kick after applying a Mikatsuki-Geri and then make an Ippon-Nukite, Keitô-Uke, using feints or real attacks, speed and strength. With its jumps, this is a very complex Kata.

-- PRESENTATION: TAKENOUCHI RYŪ KOSHINOMAWARI KOGUSOKU --
Takenouchi Ryū was founded by Takenouchi Nakatsukasadayū Hisamori from Haga (Kyūshū) and master of Ichinose’s castle. It is said that he received the fundamental techniques of the school from the gods, in particular the “Toride” techniques to grab and disarm your opponent and the the Koshinomawari Kogusoku techniques.
In 1617 his son Hisakatsu was entitled “Hinoshita Toride Kaisan” under the common name Tōichirō by imperial decree of emperor Gomizu-no-O, and in 1663 his own son Hisakichi received the same honor by emperor Reigen. In three generations, the completed the establishment of the school.
From that moment on and during the following 400 years, about 30 branches were formed and developed, and the school has trained many disciples throughout those decades until now.
