■About YAMATO
More than ten centuries ago, a capital of Japan existed here.
Several generations of kings of the “Yamato Dynasty” ruled here and expanded their influence outward.
Eventually, Yamato became a word meaning the whole of Japan.
The foundation of Japan was built here.
This ancient capital - older than Kyoto or Nara - did not develop as other ancient capitals did, and thus was left largely untouched.
Feel the unknown mystery of the history of Japan in this quiet, untraveled location.

Okamoto Yoko Shihan - Aikido Kyoto - 55th All Japan Aikido Demonstration (2017)
Okamoto Yoko Shihan, currently holding the 6th dan, studied Aikido not only at the Hombu Dojo with the late Doshu Kisshomaru Ueshiba, but also in France with Christian Tissier Shihan. In 2003 she founded the meanwhile very well-known Aikido Kyoto, definitely one of the dojos to visit in Japan. Well structured and interesting classes and a warm atmosphere are what you'll find there.

Aikido Demonstration during the 2019 Kagamibiraki & Budo Hajime, at the Nippon Budokan.
Grappling techniques by Hino Terumasa, 5th Dan, Shidoin.
Uke: Kuwahara Syota (3rd Dan).
Aikido is a contemporary martial art founded mid 20th century by Ueshiba Morihei.
The founder studied several Japanese traditional martial arts while pursuing an intense spiritual practice. This leads to the transformation of the techniques, from “Jutsu” or “technical application” to “Do”, “the Way”, implementing a focus on the development of the practitioner’s character.
The founder used to say: True martial arts are not meant for competing with techniques that rely on strength, but are a way for those who seek self-perfection.
Today’s demonstration consists of throwing techniques, grappling techniques, defense against knife and free techniques, by a delegation from the Aikikai Hombu Dojo, the Aikido world headquarter.
The Kagamibiraki is a traditional ceremony which translates to opening the mirror (symbolically).
Taking its roots in the Shogunate, it is strongly linked to Budo practice and it is natural that the Budo Hajime (first practice of the year) is celebrated at the same time.
At the Nippon Budokan, the ceremony is held at the beginning of January and consists in:
- The Kagamibiraki, with a historical reconstruction (in armor).
- Budo Demonstrations (by the 9 official Budo).
- Budo Hajime (first practice of the year, all practitioners present can practice).
- The Oshiruko kai. “Oshiruko” is a traditional and popular sweet azuki bean paste soup with mochi (which symbolize the sharing of the mochi that was broken before during the ceremony).
