Wild SideTV-Short Mountain
It's one of the most significant features of the Eastern Highland Rim..and a mountain of contradictions. At least that's one way you could describe the highest summit in Middle Tennessee. It rises to two-thousand-74 feet in elevation and yet it's named Short Mountain. Property once used for a secret marijuana operation is now a place for public use. It's a land filled with wild wonder...unique habitats that provide homes for a diverse group of wildlife...red salamanders, Gunter Cave beetles, Short Mountain crayfish, and others. Wild Side Guide Annette Nole Hall was there when local, state and federal authorities came together to open the state's 124th Wildlife Management Area. From show 3105. Short Mountain Distillery - Spring Planting 2011
The oak buds are as big as a squirrel's ears around here, and that means it's time to plant the corn.
We got a little extra help from the Middle Tennessee Mule Skinners Association when it came to getting our first organic corn crops planted.
Here's some video showing the five mule teams that showed up Saturday April 9, 2011. Each Saturday in April we're hosting local mule teams as we disc and plant 7 acres of corn for the distillery's Fall whiskey and moonshine runs.

CCABLAC Visits Woodbury - Cannon County, Tennessee Opposing Big Lick Animal Cruelty!!
A CCABLAC delegation visited Woodbury, Cannon County, Tennessee on Monday, March 11, 2019.
The visit included going to the Cannon County Courthouse, local businesses and the Woodbury Lions Club.
Following the 2018 Woodbury Lions Club Horse Show, a Change.Org Petition gained over 13,000 signature in 14 days opposing the Animal Cruelty to Tennessee Walking Horses on July 7, 2018.
Some of the Tennesseans who signed the Petition commented::
K. Brown Chattanooga, TN 2018-07-13 I am very sorry to see that the Woodbury Lions Club is associated with the Big Lick Tennessee Walking Horse. As a long-time horse owner and rider in Tennessee, I have seen the rampant abuse in big lick barns and shows, and I've seen lots of former big lick horses that were scarred and crippled for life by soring and by living on stacked shoes. It's time for the majestic Tennessee Walking Horse to be appreciated for its innate talent and beauty by showing only as nature intended - flat shod. The Lions Club would do a service to the breed, the state of Tennessee, and would uphold its own purpose, to promote high ethical standards in commerce, industry, professions, public works and private endeavors by severing ties with the Big Lick - the equine activity that has been banned by the US Equestrian Federation, the World Equestrian Games (2010, Lexington), the Kentucky Horse Park, and the FEI.
R. Robinson Sparta, TN 2018-07-12 A fine organization like the Lions Club is now supporting cruelty in order to supply funds to their cofers. They are much better than this. To the Lion's Club members, are you not doing your homework that would inform you that the big lick is achieved by cruel, inhumane methods. The training methods have been witnessed, have been declared by vets, the 2 most prestigious veterinary organizations in the country, many professional horse trainers, enthusiasts, knowledgeable practioners that this is cruel and must be stopped.
K. Walker Wartrace, TN 2018-07-13 The Bick Lick is an industry and its an industry full of corruption and abuse to the beautiful walking horse . I am a recovering big lick supporter and participant and I can say first hand that this really is an abusive practice to the horse and needs to STOP . These horses are locked in stalls 24/7 and are forced to wear 8lb shoes to get the big lick gait. Its not normal and its cruel to the horse all for a ribbon. Those in the industry are delusional and until they see the light they will continue to practice soring to achieve this gait and harm the horse. I hope you will sign and if you are a supporter I can only say God will be your judge and jury in the end...
S. McKenzie Knoxville, TN 2018-07-14 There is no way to create the artificial *big lick* gait in any horse other than through extreme pain. As soon as the pain subsides and the stacks are removed, the horse reverts to a more normal way of moving and stops the hideous limping crawl displayed in the show ring.
L. Young Decatur, TN 2018-07-20 Woodbury Lions Club, you are condoning and promoting a horrific form of animal cruelty. If you truly know nothing of the suffering caused by the Big Lick style participants then you need to educate yourselves. No excuses now that this has been brought to your attention. If you turn a blind eye at this point you are no better than the ones physically doing this, and shame on you. How about doing the right thing, morally and ethically, and being a voice for those that have none? As it stands this is a huge blight against you and your community. Be better than that. S. Sevierville, TN 2018-07-20 These magnificent animals should be enjoyed for what they are and NOT what man has tried to make them. To subject them to pain and torture just so they can 'walk' pretty is so wrong on so many levels. The time has come to stop it and it can begin with the Lions Club show.
D. Kean Cleveland, TN 2018-07-21 These horses suffer unimaginably from these horrible practices, and we have the power to stop it!! They don't have a voice, so we have to advocate for them. I'm a horse owner and I cannot imagine ever. Ever. EVER. Doing this to our horses!!!
M. Powell, TN 2018-07-21 Animal torture is not entertainment.
Native Tennessean MTSU (Middle Tennessee State University) Horse Science Professor Equine Vet Dr. John Haffner says the Big Lick is Animal Cruelty. It is a business built on the suffering and pain of horses - it is a pain induced gait. MTSU is the largest state supported university in the State of Tennessee. It is located just 20 miles from Woodbury, TN. The current President of the Woodbury Lions Club is a faculty member at MTSU.

Voting in Cannon CountyTennessee
There was a 100' boundary that candidates could not cross at the Cannon County Election Commission Friday on the first day of early voting. A patrolman from Woodbury Police Department was watching the door.
Stanley Dobson, Administrator of Elections, stated voter turnout was pretty good this morning and there was a fairly long line to vote. Polls closed at 12 p.m., will open again Saturday morning at 9 a.m. and close at 12 p.m., but will be there until the last person votes.
Several candidates were in attendance at 9:30 a.m., including the first early voter of Cannon County, Matt Tepley who is running for County Court Clerk. Also there were Mike Grosch, candidate for Sheriff, Rebekah Parton, candidate for County Executive, Kim Bailey, candidate for Commissioner District 2,Larry Sanders, candidate for Circuit Court Clerk, a Darrell Young for Sheriff supporter.
There were also people relaxed under the trees, a great hideout from the hot sun. There was a report of a person who had a possible heatstroke in the back of a hollow, Cannon County EMS responded along with the Cannon County Rescue Squad.
Also there collecting signatures were Short Mountain Distillery. If you signed or want to sign, it will not be that you support or don't support the project, but will only put it on the ballot to let the people decide if they want it or not.
When talking to Billy Kaufman (apology to Kaufman, it's not him in the video), they lack several signatures having enough.
Kaufman's family founded Samsonite luggage and he's interested in creating an job opportunities and more for Cannon County with the distillery.
Lynchburg, the home of Jack Daniels and a touring capital, is a dry county just as Cannon County is, stated Kaufman.
The Cannon County Arts Center was having a play this weekend and The Kitchen, one of Cannon County's newest restaurants, was wide open for business. Succulent food was the word and there was even a long table for regulars who meet to eat when it's open. It was full to overflowing today. Meet the Chef in the video.
Jim Jones of the Shirt Shack is helping with a fundraiser, for $20 you can buy a shirt and money will go toward SAVE, states Lisa Baird, who shows off a pink shirt.
The square is again alive, at least on Friday nights with another Darrell Young for Sheriff get together and there were more this Friday than the last.
Music could be heard all over Woodbury, because at the Dillon Park there was music and Christian fellowship youth rally.

Mule power provides timber for Berea's deep green residence hall
Berea College will begin construction on what will be the most energy-efficient residence hall in the commonwealth of Kentucky, if not the country, in April 2012. The 42,000 square foot building, referred to as the Deep Green Residence Hall will be constructed adjacent to Boone Tavern Hotel & Restaurant and will house 120 students in 66 rooms. Construction is expected to be completed by August 2013.
This new residence hall will stand as the latest example of Berea's long-standing commitment to ecological sustainability or 'plain living' as it's stated in our Great Commitments, says Berea College President Larry Shinn. We hope that this 'deep green' residence hall and the sustainable methods and materials used during construction will inspire others to reduce their carbon footprints and protect our natural resources.
The construction methods, sustainability features and use of local and recycled materials in construction of the residence hall fit within the college's strategic direction to meet the American College & University President's Climate Commitment goal of eliminating greenhouse gas emissions from campus operations and promoting sustainability as a role model for students and the broader community.
The first new residential facility constructed at Berea College since the Ecovillage a decade ago, this $16.5 million Deep Green Residence Hall will be the third campus building to meet LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. The LEED Certification denotes independent verification from the U.S. Green Building Council that a building is designed and constructed using strategies aimed at achieving high performance in key areas of human and environmental health. Berea's residence hall is expected to achieve LEED Platinum certification.
In determining a building's certification, LEED measures performance in several sustainability categories, including energy and atmosphere (energy consumption and monitoring and the use of renewable energy sources), water efficiency, materials and resources, innovation in design, and awareness and education.
The deep-green features of the facility will blend the focus on students' needs to create a highly sustainable but comfortable residence for living and learning, says Steve Karcher, vice president for operations and sustainability. Student involvement in the design process was critical in identifying opportunities for education about sustainability in a beautiful, student-centered structure.
To reduce the building's ecological footprint, the residence hall will feature solar photovoltaic and solar thermal systems that will provide about 14 percent of the building's energy needs; an ultra-efficient geothermal heat pump recirculation system; active daylighting; high-efficiency lighting; a highly insulated, state-of-the-art building envelope; triple-pane operable windows with solar shading; low-¬flow water fixtures and real-time monitoring of energy consumption. Composting toilets and gray or rain water recycling systems were designed and planned for the building, but current Kentucky building codes do not allow for their application in a residence hall.
Using timber harvested by mule teams in the Berea College Forest, the Berea College Student Crafts program is constructing 267 pieces of furniture for the residence hall. We're building 120 desks, 120 three-drawer chests, and a number of specialty tables that are of particular interest for us because we're using the wood that came from the site where the residence hall is being built, says Tim Glotzbach, director of the Student Crafts program. Animal-powered timber harvesting is more ecologically friendly and less damaging to the ecosystem than highly mechanized methods. It's very low-impact as far as soil disturbance, says Berea College Forester Clint Patterson. There's just a little scuff mark along the forest floor where the log was dragged out and then some mule tracks.
The residence hall will provide a learning opportunity for students, staff, faculty and visitors. Faculty and students will provide input on the artistic elements of the building, which will include color and art schemes, as well as integration of historic and student art displays. During the construction phase and after it's occupied, the Deep Green Residence Hall will provide opportunities for interaction that will inform and educate residents and visitors about sustainable practices and features. Live monitoring of the building's energy footprint will provide immediate feedback on energy consumption.
The building has been designed in a unique, collaborative architectural partnership between Hastings & Chivetta (lead) and Hellmuth & Bicknese (sustainable features), both based in St. Louis, Mo. The building construction will be managed by the Lexington, Ky., office of Cincinnati-based Messer Construction Co.
