Last Samurai Himeji Mount Shoshazan Engyoji Rope Way Cable Car Experience
In October 2017, I traveled to Japan using the JR pass to Himeji Shoshazan Engyoji temple. I am sharing my day trip travel experience of visiting film locations of one of my favorite movies Last Samurai which embraces deep rooted Japanese culture of Bushido or the Way of Samurai Warriors.
Engyoji Temple (円教寺), Himeji City
Engyoji Temple (円教寺) is located in Himeji City (姫路市) of Hyogo Prefecture in Japan. Located over a height of 1000 feet on top of Mt. Shosha, this temple is also called Shoshazan Engyoji. It is Temple #27 in the Saikoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage of Western Japan. Some scenes of Tom Cruise's movie The Last Samurai were shot at this temple precincts. From top of the mountain you can see great views of Himeji City and the Seto Inland Sea.

Shoshazan Engyoji Temple himeji japan
The Shoshazan Engyō-ji is a temple of the Tendai sect in Himeji, Hyōgo, Japan. It was founded by Shoku Shonin in 966.
The complex of buildings is at the top of Mt Shosha and can be reached by Mt. Shosha Ropeway, and is often visited by pilgrims. Scenes from The Last Samurai were filmed here.

Pardon the reflection.
This ride is short but has a nice view of the city of Himeji. The temple complex was where certain scenes of The Last Samurai were filmed.

Mt Shosha is home to Engyoji Temple, a prominent and charming Buddhist temple founded in 966. Engyoji Temple is an important training centre for Buddhist monks, and its beautiful grounds are so charming that its often used in filming, including Tom Cruise's The Last Samurai.
Visitors can get to Engyoji Temple via a ropeway service from the foot of Mt Shosha.

Shoshazan Engyou-ji (Japan Trip) /
It's a temple and located in a mountain in Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. You will take a ropeway and then take a hike, which is moderate/easy, to the temple complex. Temple buildings are spread out in the area. Scenes of American film The Lost Samurai were shot in the site.
Shoshazan temples - Himeji - Japan (書寫山圓教寺)
Temple assez connu par le film : The Last Samurai !

Mount Shosha Ropeway (POV and more) (Japan Trip) /
It's an aerial lift located in Mount Shosha in Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture in the west Japan. You may take the lift to go to the Shoshazan Engyo-ji temple. A video I made about the temple is here:

Japan Trip 2018 - Day 10 - Mt Fuji, Hakone Ropeway, Owakudani, Tozan Cable Car
Day 10 was here and we were nearing the end of our Japan trip. Today was spent heading towards Hakone-Yumoto station to check out the famous Red Bridge - Ajisai Bridge and to spot Mt Fuji hiding behind the clouds.
The temperate today was very cold, I would say around 7 degrees celsius without and wind chill. Luckily it wasn't very windy otherwise it would have been much much colder.
We boarded the Hakone Pirate Ship then stopped for lunch at the Togendai View Restaurant and made our way to the Hakone Ropeway, a gondola chairlift similar to the ones at Blackcomb and Whistler mountains in Canada.
The ropeway starts at the bottom and once you get to the top you're at Owakudani. There are natural hot springs along with a myriad of shops. Also the Black Egg seems to be very popular along with some black ice cream which unfortunately I didn't try.
Once we were done, we caught the Tozan Cable Car back down and then headed home for an earlyish night.

Mt. Shosha 書写山 - The Last Samurai
I visited Mt. Shosha (書写山) which lies on the edge of Himeji City in Hyogo Prefecture. Due to its beautiful views and lack of modernization this place is often used as a filming location for movies and TV dramas, including The Last Samurai. Plus the view from the rope-way was is hard to beat. I highly recommend visiting if you are in Himeji, especially if you want a break from the city...
Hope you enjoy the video. Thanks for watching.

Japan Trip Engyoji Temple
Shoshazan Engyoji dates from 966. The temple sits atop Mt. Shosha in Hyogo Prefecture south of Himeji. Engyoji is temple #27 on the 33 temple, 1000km Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage.
There is a ropeway to carry you from the bottom of the mountain to a visitor center. Just a short distance from there is the temple bell (Jihi no Kane). Visitors are encouraged to ring the temple bell (just once please). If you do, you will feel the long, low sound resonate through your body.
The path from the temple bell to the main gate (Niomon) is flanked by bodhisattvas. Each of these icons represent one of the temples on the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage. Completing this mini-pilgrimmage is said to have the same effect as taking the 1000km journey. As you walk up the trail, you will hear the bell ring again and again!
This is truly one of the great temple sites in Japan. Enjoy!
BTW: Scenes from the Last Samurai were filmed here. Once you visit, it is easy to see why this location was picked!

Mount Shosha (Shoshazan) is where Engyoji (Engyōji), an atmospheric temple complex with a history of over 1000 years, is situated. Located at the end of Himeji City, the mountain can be reached in only 30 minutes from the city center by bus and ropeway.
Engyoji's temple buildings are spread in a wide, densely forested area on the top of the mountain. From the ropeway station it takes a 10 to15 minute walk uphill to reach Niomon Gate, and another 10 to15 minutes to reach the Maniden, a beautiful wooden temple hall, built on pillars on a steep slope. Or, you can take a minibus operating between the upper ropeway station and the Maniden every 20 minutes for 500 yen.
