Shoshone Falls - Twin Falls, Idaho (2017) [HD]
Shoshone Falls is a waterfall on the Snake River in southern Idaho, United States, located approximately 3 miles (4.8 km) northeast of the city of Twin Falls. Sometimes called the Niagara of the West, Shoshone Falls is 212 feet (65 m) high—45 feet (14 m) higher than Niagara Falls—and flows over a rim nearly 1,000 feet (300 m) wide.
Formed by catastrophic outburst flooding during the Pleistocene ice age about 14,000 years ago, Shoshone Falls marks the historical upper limit of fish migration (including salmon) in the Snake River and was an important fishing and trading place for Native Americans. The falls were documented by Europeans as early as the 1840s; despite the isolated location, it became a tourist attraction starting in the 1860s. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Snake River was controversially diverted for irrigation of the Magic Valley, with the result that the falls no longer flow with force year-round. However, irrigation and hydroelectric power stations built on the falls were the primary contributors to early economic development in southern Idaho.
A park overlooking the waterfall is owned and operated by the City of Twin Falls. Shoshone Falls is best viewed in the spring, as diversion of the Snake River often significantly diminishes water levels in the late summer and fall. The flow over the falls ranges from over 20,000 cubic feet per second (570 m3/s) during late spring of wet years, to a minimum scenic flow (dam release) of 300 cubic feet per second (8.5 m3/s) in dry years. ~ wikipedia.org

Shoshone Falls - Twin Falls, Idaho
Video from my visit on May 24, 2009.
Shoshone Falls is among the most spectacular of natural beauties along the Snake River. At 212 feet, the falls are higher than Niagara Falls. They are best viewed during the spring and early summer, when water flows are high - depending on winter snow melt. Irrigation diversion of Snake River flows can significantly diminish water over the falls in the summer and fall, particularly during dry years. However, even without high water flows, the views at Shoshone Falls remain spectacular year-round. The City of Twin Falls owns and operates the Shoshone Falls/Dierkes Lake Complex. It offers a unique blend of recreational facilities, including playgrounds and hiking trails, landscaped picnic areas, a boat ramp and swimming area, and a scenic overlook. The complex provides restroom facilities and visitor information, and for a nominal per-car entry fee, visitors can enjoy picnicking and relaxing in the shaded, grassy areas, which provide perfect vantage points for viewing Shoshone Falls.
Season: All Year
Hours: 7:00am to 9:00pm
Fees: $3 per car, $20 per bus Annual permits are available for $25 at Twin Falls City Hall or the City Parks & Recreation Office

Shoshone Falls Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Shoshone Falls.
Around five miles east of the town of Twin Falls in the U.S. State of Idaho, a spectacular and fascinating natural phenomenon attracts much attention. Shoshone Falls is one of the most visited attractions of the region and is also very well known way beyond Idaho, its waters plunging sixty five metres down into the depths below, a truly breathtaking sight. The waters of Shoshone Falls are supplied by Snake River, one of the longest and most important tributaries of the legendary Columbia Rivers. The source of Snake River, whose name was created by the Shoshone Indians, lies at the continental watershed of North America namely, the Yellowstone National Park. Man’s visible encroachment on the falls has been few and far between. Even the hydroelectric power station at Shoshone Falls has not really impacted on the local scenery. Indeed, the vast majority of the basalt rock walls were not damaged by the construction of the oldest hydroelectric power plant in Idaho, Magic Valley. Far into the future, water will also play an important role in Magic Valley and will continue to find its way through the rocks and down into the valley below. The mighty sound of Shoshone Falls will never be silenced!

Kayak Shoshone Falls
Shoshone Falls is a bigger than life paddle. Set in at Centennial Waterfront Park (no kayak or SUP? Rent one at the AWOL stand in the park). It’s a 4 hour round trip trek, with a portage around Pillar Falls. The journey offers an awesome view of the I.B. Perrine Bridge, BASE jumpers and Knievel’s jump site from below. At the end, you’ll float at the base of the 212′ Niagara of the West. It’s a downriver float back, but still, waters make the return trip feel the same.
