We love to find unusual places, workshops, courtyards, graffiti - all that is usually not noticed and run past. Therefore, we know a lot of things that are not written about in tourist guides.

Sculpture to Mihály Zichy (Gogla Leonidze's former Alexander’s garden, Tbilisi, Georgia)
Mihály Zichy, a 19th-century Hungarian painter, rose to the rank of national painter in Georgia as he produced the classic illustrations that have been frequently used in editions of Rustaveli's poetry. A sculpture and a street commemorate Zichy's work in Tbilisi.
Melik-Azariants house (Tbilisi, Georgia) / მელიქ-აზარიანცის სახლი
This part of the avenue still is called formally Zemeli. Zemeli in German means a roll (Semmel). At the same time there was a huge drugstore, which belonged to a German chemist Zemmel. Unfortunately this drugstore does not exist anymore. Melik-Azariants House is located instead. This gigantic, spread into the whole quarter building was owned by a merchant Alexander Melik-Azariants belonging to the top guild. And it still bears the name of its first owner. Even at the beginning of the 20th century there were power and water supply systems, heating system, telephone network, a nursery, a cinema theatre, a photo saloon, Arts Gallery, and a garden with a fountain and exotic plants. Manyentrance construction with its wide windows, bay windows and tower takes up an entire quarter and nowadays it remains the evidence of the construction boom at the beginning of the 20th century. The stone mourning wreaths on its towers remind of a 25 yearold merchant's daughter, who died soon after the completion of the construction works. People say, that the merchants of the whole city came and dropped their jewelry there - for good luck. But the house did not bring happiness to Melik-Azariants - he died in poverty at Soviet times and was buried with his friends' money.

In the 12th century, the Georgian poet Shota Rustaveli wrote Vepkhis-tqaosani (The Knight in the Panther’s Skin), a work so influential over the centuries that it has been called the Georgians’ second Bible.

Sittin' On Top Of The World | live in Tbilisi (Kartlis Deda/Mother of Georgia statue)
Live from the top of Tbilisi, Georgia, performing the traditional American blues song Sittin' On Top Of The World with my guitalele and harmonica near the big Mother Of Georgia (Kartlis Deda) statue, with a view over the whole city center of the Georgian capital.
The song was written by Walter Vinson and Lonnie Chatmon, members of the Mississippi Sheiks, who first recorded it in 1930.
It has been covered by many artists in many musical styles in the following decades. I personally love Bob Dylan's version from his Good As I Been To You album (1992).
This is the 1st video in my new travel series from #Georgia, where I spent about three weeks travelling in May 2018, after visiting some places in Azerbaijan, which was my previous travel series.
Watch the full playlist of my Trip to Georgia series here:
Performed on May 18, 2018, while sitting on the top of Sololaki hill, near the ancient Narikala fortress (where the cableway shown in the videos arrives) and the big Mother of Georgia (Kartlis Deda, ქართლის დედა) statue (built in 1958 to celebrate the 1500th anniversay of Tbilisi, she holds a bowl of wine in one hand to welcome those who come as friends, while in the other hand she holds a sword to fight against enemies). From this very panoramic point there's a nice view over many of the main places in central Tbilisi, including Metekhi church, Tsminda Sameba (Holy Trinity) cathedral, Liberty Square, Rhike park with music theatre and exhibition hall, Bridge of Peace.
Performed with Yamaha GL1 Guitalele and Hohner Pro Harp harmonica in the key of A.

Rustaveli Avenue (Tbilisi, Georgia) / რუსთაველის გამზირი, თბილისი
From Freedom Square begins Rustaveli Avenue - the main artery of Tbilisi. This is the most popular place for walking. When a telephone was a rarity everybody knew, that to see anybody you wanted was possible while walking there. The Avenue was built in the 19-th century, when M. S. Vorontsov was a ruler of Georgia. The avenue was divided into two parts - Palace street and the Golovini Avenue. In 1918 it got the name of Shota Rustaveli, the author of the immortal poem The knight in the panther's skin.

monument to Memed Abashidze - მემედ აბაშიძის ძეგლი (Tbilisi,Georgia)
Memed Abashidze (Georgian: მემედ აბაშიძე) (January 18, 1873 – 1937) was a Georgian politician, writer and public benefactor. An eminent leader of Muslim Georgian community of Adjarians, he was a major proponent of pro-Georgian orientation in Adjara and one of the architects of the region's autonomy within Georgia. He became a victim of Joseph Stalin’s Great Purge.
Biography
Abashidze was born into the powerful Muslim Georgian noble house of Abashidze, rulers of Adjara for the Ottoman Empire. After Adjara was absorbed into Imperial Russia in 1878, Georgian intellectuals launched a campaign aimed at reincorporation of local Muslim Georgian community into the Georgian society. Mehmed’s father, Prince Ibrahim Abashidze, sided with this movement and helped open a Georgian school in Batumi in 1883. Born in Turkish-dominated Batumi, Mehmed attended this school. At the same time, he received a traditional education at home. Fluent in several languages, he began translating Arabic, Persian, and Turkish works into Georgian and authored the first Georgian textbook on the Arabic language and the first Turkish translation of the well-known medieval Georgian epic The Knight in the Panther's Skin by Shota Rustaveli (the manuscript of this translation was lost in the 1930s). Besides, Abashidze’s plays were staged in the recently opened Batumi Drama Theatre.
During the Russian Revolution of 1905, he became involved in the political life of Georgia. His brother, Aslan-Beg Abashidze, was a commander of one of the revolutionary detachments. From 1904 to 1908, he was a member of the Socialist Federalist Party of Georgia and advocated pro-Georgian orientation among the Adjarian Muslims. In 1908, the Russian persecutions forced him to flee to the Ottoman Empire where he was arrested. Back in Adjara in 1913, he was imprisoned by the Tsarist police and eventually exiled to Siberia. Prohibited from returning to Batumi, he stayed in Tbilisi after his release and led the Committee of Georgian Muslims for the Batumi District. Russia’s February Revolution of 1917 enabled to him to return to his native Adjara, where his Committee quickly turned into opposition to resurgent pan-Tukist movement and attempted to bring Christian and Muslim Georgians together. In November 1917, he was elected to the National Council of Georgia. During the Turkish occupation of Batumi in 1918, he stayed in the region and was arrested for his criticism of the Turkish authorities. He escaped from the Trebizond prison later that year and welcomed the declaration of the independent Democratic Republic of Georgia in May 1918. When the British took control of Batumi from the Ottomans in December 1918, Abashidze returned to the city and organized the Congress of the People of Adjara which campaigned against the British installed government headed by the Russian Cadet Maslov. The movement forced the British military administration to organize local parliamentary elections on August 31 1919. Abashidze became chairman of the newly elected Mejlis (National Assembly) which was soon to become a scene of heated struggle between pro-Georgian and Turkophile factions. Abashidze renewed his campaign calling for the incorporation of Adjara into Georgia with an autonomous status and criticizing the Allies’ attempts to turn Batumi into a free port. Upon the evacuation of the British, Georgian army entered Batumi on July 8 1920, but the question of Adjara’s autonomy remained still open. When Soviet Russia’s Red Army occupied Georgia in February-March 1921, Abashizde resigned his position in the Mejlis and chose a policy of reconciliation with the newly established Bolshevik regime. He became a member of the Revolutionary Committee of the Batumi district and took part in drafting the first constitution of the Adjar ASSR. Although the Soviet authorities were suspicious of Abashidze, he was still well treated and received a pension thanks probably to his erstwhile ties with Joseph Stalin who worked in Batumi in the early 1900s. In 1935, he became the head of the Adjarian section of the Writers’ Union of Georgia. During the Great Purges, however, he was arrested on trumped-up charges of treason and executed later that year. His family members were also repressed. Abashidze was rehabilitated only in 1957.

Day 5 in Tbilisi, Georgia!
Tbilisi Railway (Subway) Experience | Tbilisi Georgia (Country)
I said goodbye to my two Italian roommates. And headed over to the Tbilisi reservoir with Jonathan from France. Jonathan is also my roommate in my hostel. He invited me to Tbilisi Lake for the last tour before going to Armenia at 8:20PM on that the same day.
From Freedom Square, we took the Metro Rail to Varkitili. I was so amazed by their escalator in the subway because it's so long and deep! It took us more than two minutes going down. We reached Varkitili and looked for bus number 9 that will take us to the Tbilisi sea, but unfortunately, there was no bus number 9 out there.
About Tbilisi reservoir is also known as the Tbilisi sea.
The Tbilisi sea (Georgian: თბილისის ზღვა) or Tbilisi reservoir (თბილისის წყალსაცავი) is an artificial lake in the vicinity of Tbilisi that serves as a reservoir. The lake has a length of 8.75 km and a width of 2.85 km. It was opened in 1953 and has become a popular recreation spot. It is planned to develop the Tbilisi sea into a recreational park with various sports facilities. Source: Wikipedia
