Flash rainfall causes a flood in Hebden Bridge. Again.
The River Hebden at Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire, UK - 3rd October, 2012
Footage of the fast flowing peat-brown stained River Hebden as it snakes through the centre of the West Yorkshire Pennine town of Hebden Bridge. The footage begins at Waterside Fold and ends where the River Hebden meets the River Calder. En route it passes Nutclough Mill, children can be seen throwing leaves into the river, and a plastic bottle bobs along the river surface before going over the weir next to Bridge Mill where work is taking place to build a hydro electric power source utilising the power of the river. The next feature is St George's Bridge and the view from it in al directions including the Shoulder of Mutton pub. After this Hebden Old Bridge becomes the focus, where a musician plays a stringed board based instrument. The views then along Old Gate feature the local ducks competing for places in the island eddy of the fast flowing river and a flooded footpath with a partially submerged handrail. Finally the footage ends where the Rivers Hebden and Calder meet.

Shoulder of Mutton
Pub in Great Bowden Market Harborough
Although this public house is only a mile or two from Market Harborough, when you visit you could be excused for thinking you were miles from anywhere. The charming picturesque village of Great Bowden is a peaceful and unhurried place with a popular hostelry, The Shoulder of Mutton which is an up and coming establishment that is a firm favourite with locals and visitors to the area.
Standing proud on the village green, with its elegant stonewashed exterior, it creates the sort of view that is seen on a picture postcard. The interior of the pub is equally attractive with public and lounge bars, a games area, conservatory restaurant and a large well maintained beer garden to the rear. This makes it a restful place to drink and eat in the warm weather.

Market Street in Hebden Bridge and some of its specialist shops, before the flood...
Market Street is only a small part of the Hebden Bridge, but like elsewhere in the town, there are quite a few independent specialist shops. Many of these are now suffering greatly after the recent flooding and some will remain closed for a couple of months, seriously threatening the livelihoods of those people running them. Please support the town and its people as much as possible by keeping your shopping local, whenever you have a choice. Thanks.

Hebden Bridge flooding July 9th 2012
Flash flooding caused further destruction in the Calder Valley today, washing rocks and other debris off the hill sides into the town.
Unfortunately, the British Gas van I was behind at 3:40 then sped through the water creating a bow wave that then entered the shops, which is why the woman in the cafe window looks agitated.
It is also worth noting that modern cameras don't need you to look through the viewfinder (technology, eh?) so all of the footage is created by pointing the camera of the general direction of where stuff is going on. I'm sure that won't satisfy the Elf an Safety experts who want to see me behind bars, but hey, you can't please all the people all the time. :-)

Nutclough Mill & Hebden Bridge - Part 3
Earlier this year Calrec commisioned local Hebden-based historian and academic David Fletcher of Pennine Heritage to talk us through the history of Calrec's HQ, Nutclough Mill. If you missed parts one and two, you can find them in the 'Calrec' category on the community.calrec.com website.
In part three of six in our series of photo essays, David talks us through to the 1960′s. Nutclough Mill's fortunes peaked at the start of the 20th century. Two World Wars and a Depression severely damaged the British textile industry. By the Fifties, Hebden Bridge and the Calder Valley was in decline.
The photo essays are produced by Informed Sauce. The interview with David Fletcher was conducetd in the Summer of 2011. The vast majority of photos used are from the Pennine Heritage archive.
