samuel-archive of archive.org presents various Boston television broadcasts—March 5, 1980
On a hunt for .ISO image files on archive.org, I stumbled upon this find of vintage broadcasts from the Boston metropolitan area. I downloaded the ISO image, in the form of a .CDR file that was burned to a DVD-R. It comes from a gentleman named samuel-archive, who I hope is comfortable with my YouTube upload of this footage. I am simply posting this because I could not find anything on his archive.org account that says he would object to my doing so. Here is the link to his capture:
The following items were in the find:
1. End of CANDLEPINS FOR CASH + NEWSROOM 7 + CBS EVENING NEWS with Walter Cronkite—WNAC-TV7
The anchors of the 6PM newscast are John Henning and Mary Richardson. Harvey Leonard handles the weather, with sports headlines being read by John Dennis. There is also a review by local talk radio host David Brudnoy of the movie BEING THERE, which opened that day in the Boston area; the theatres it was playing at, as listed in the Boston Globe via Newspapers.com, were Sacks Paris, Natick and Danvers cinemas, and the Showcase Circle, Woburn and Dedham cinemas. Two years after the tape was recorded, WNAC-TV lost its license due to the deceptive practices of its owner, RKO General, which is credited at the end of the NEWSROOM 7 telecast. It was replaced by WNEV-TV, which is currently a news-intensive independent named WHDH-TV. Originally locally-owned, the newer channel 7 was sold to Sunbeam Television in 1993.
Commercials are for Greyhound Bus, Friendly, Robitussin, General Tire (the corporate parent of RKO General), Genesee, Purity Supreme, the Chrysler Cordova, Nationwide Insurance, London Fog at Jordan Marsh, Bolla Trebbiano, Wood-Mode Cabinery, Lincoln-Mercury, Gallery of Homes, B&G Wines, Jordan Marsh, the Plymouth TC3, Duracell, Marriott's Essex House, The Home Show at Hines Auditorium, Manischewitz Almonetta (with Sammy Davis, Jr.), Heartland Food Warehouse, Ford's Fuel Economy Celebration, Mazola Margerine, A1 Steak Sauce, Elmer's Wonder Bond Plus, Visa, the Canon XP 200 and Tums.
2. THE MacNEIL/LEHRER REPORT + Local Funding Credit + ALL-STAR SOCCER—WGBX-TV44
Robert MacNeil and Jim Lehrer discuss the results of the Massachusetts and Vermont primaries with Los Angeles Times reporter Robert Shogan, political consultant John Deardorff, and political commentator Kevin Phillips. After this, there is a rather long local funding credit for the not-quite-NEWSHOUR-yet (funded by a grant from the First National Bank of Boston) with a plain chromakeyed text below it that just reads WGBX BOSTON. Over this slide, we hear the Dave Brubeck Quartet rendering a tune called Three To Get Ready. Finally, there are five minutes of a soccer tournament between the West Bromwich Albion F.C. and the Tottenham Spurs, broadcast as part of ALL-STAR SOCCER. The (very rare) ITC Entertainment logo at the start of the game indicates that this is possibly an Americanized telecast of ATV's coverage of the game,
Originally, channel 44 was a construction permit for a would-be independent named WJDW-TV, run by the Jack Wrahter-Maria Alvarez partnership. In 1965, the business partners sold it to the WGBH Educational Foundation, which used the permit to launch a second educational station in the Boston area. WGBX-TV went on the air on September 25, 1967. The X in the name stands for experimental; in the '70s, WGBH used channel 44 to run programs which, if popular, would be moved to its main station, channel 2. Channel 44 also airs primetime shows from either station on a one-day delay.

CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Charlie (Tom Cruise) takes Ray (Dustin Hoffman) to a farmhouse to watch People's Court.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Self-centered, avaricious Californian Charlie Babbitt (Tom Cruise) is informed that his long-estranged father has died. Expecting at least a portion of the elder Babbitt's $3 million estate, Charlie learns that all he's inherited is his dad's prize roses and a 1949 Buick Roadmaster. Discovering that the $3 million is being held in trust for an unidentified party, Charlie heads to his home town of Cincinnati to ascertain who that party is. It turns out that the beneficiary is Raymond Babbitt (Dustin Hoffman), the autistic-savant older brother that Charlie never knew he had. Able to memorize reams of trivia and add, subtract, multiply, and divide without a second's hesitation, Raymond is otherwise incapable of functioning as a normal human being. Aghast that Raymond is to receive his father's entire legacy, Charlie tries to cut a deal with Raymond's guardian. When this fails, Charlie borrows Raymond from the institution where he lives, hoping to use his brother as leverage to claim half the fortune. During their subsequent cross-country odyssey, Charlie is forced to accommodate Raymond's various autistic idiosyncracies, not the least of which is his insistence on adhering to a rigid daily schedule: he must, for example, watch People's Court and Jeopardy every day at the same time, no matter what. On hitting Las Vegas, Charlie hopes to harness Raymond's finely-honed mathematical skills to win big at the gaming tables; but this exploitation of his brother's affliction compels Charlie to reassess his own values, or lack thereof. A longtime pet project of star Dustin Hoffman, Rain Man was turned down by several high-profile directors before Barry Levinson took on the challenge of bringing Ronald Bass' screenplay to fruition (Levinson also appears in the film as a psychiatrist). All three men won Oscars, and the movie won Best Picture.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

SUMMARY
=======
New Haven is a coastal city in the U.S. state of Connecticut. It is located on New Haven Harbor on the northern shore of Long Island Sound in New Haven County, Connecticut, and is part of the New York metropolitan area. With a population of 129,779 as determined by the 2010 United States Census, it is the second-largest city in Connecticut after Bridgeport. New Haven is the principal municipality of Greater New Haven, which had a total population of 862,477 in 2010.New Haven was the first planned city in America. Founded in 1638 by English Puritans, a year later eight streets were laid out in a four-by-four grid, creating what is commonly known as the Nine Square Plan. The central common block is the New Haven Green, a 16-acre (6 ha) square, and the center of Downtown New Haven. The Green is now a National Historic Landmark and the Nine Square Plan is recognized by the American Planning Association as a National Planning Landmark.New Haven is the home of Yale University. As New Haven's biggest taxpayer and employer, Yale serves as an integral part of the city's economy. Health care (hospitals and biotechnology), professional services (legal, architectural, marketing, and engineering), financial services, and retail trade also contribute to the city's economic activity.
The city served as co-capital of Connecticut from 1701 until 1873, when sole governance was transferred to the more centrally located city of Hartford. New Haven has since billed itself as the Cultural Capital of Connecticut for its supply of established theaters, museums, and music venues. New Haven had the first public tree planting program in America, producing a canopy of mature trees (including some large elms) that gave New Haven the nickname The Elm City.
