Lama Puja, Shree Gaden Dhargay Ling Monastery in Pokhara, Nepal
Nepal is home to around 15,000 Tibetan refugees, many of which live in four refugee settlements around Pokhara. In one of these, the Tashiling Tibetan Refugee Settlement, I attended a lama puja at the Shree Gaden Dhargay Ling (Dragyling) Monastery. A Buddhist puja is an expression of honour, worship and devotional attention that includes the use of traditional Tibetan musical instruments including drums, bells, cymbals, horns and throat chanting. Tibetan monks are noted for their skill at chanting, also known as throat-singing, a specialized form of chanting in which the chanter produces multiple distinct pitches simultaneously. Tibetan Refugee Stories from Pokhara, Nepal
Two Tibetan refugees, one an ex-freedom fighter who helped escort the Dalai Lama to India when he escaped from the invading Chinese army and the other a housewife who fled as the army was destroying monasteries and killing monks by the thousands, tell their stories of escaping Tibet in 1959. Both now live near Pokhara, Nepal, in the Jampaling and Tashiling Tibetan refugee settlements. To read more about my round-the-world travels, visit my blog,

Bridging Humanity Visits the Pema Ts'al Monastery
Please share this video with anyone involved in humanitarian projects. Www.bridging-humanity.org tries to teach others how to become self sufficient by embracing the environment. We teach them how to live a healthy balanced life in harmony with their environment & how to create useful things made from trash so they can make a living. In this video we visited the Pema Ts'al Sakya Monastery which is located in Pokhara, Nepal. The monastery takes in homeless, orphaned & needy children from one of the poorest regions of Nepal as well as Tibetan refugee children. Many of the children who come to the monastery are malnourished. We are organizing a trip for the monastery's cook to visit one of the Nepal Youth Foundation's Nutrition Centers. They are going to train him on how to cook special meals for malnourished kids. During our time here we have learned a lot about the life of a monk. Some of the youngest monks are 5 years old. The children love studying & have a rigorous daily schedule. In Nepal they study & work 6 days a week & only have Saturday off. During out time here we trained some of the staff who work in the tailor shop how to repurpose left over scraps of materials to make beads for jewelry making or to make quilts. Nepal has a huge garbage bag pollution problem so we are showing them how weave items out of plastic garbage bags. These items can be sold to raise money for the monastery. The monastery needs volunteers to help teach & spend time with the kids. If anyone is interested in volunteering please send an email to sakya.pematsal@yahoo.com. And if anyone is interested in donating money, sponsoring a child or college monk or one of the monastery's projects, please visit Stay safe & stay tuned for more videos from Bridging Humanity.
