சரஸ்வதி தேவிக்குப் பிரசித்திப் பெற்ற கோயிலாக விளங்குவது கூத்தனூர். திருவாரூர் மாவட்டத்தில் நன்னிலம் வட்டத்தில் அமைந்துள்ள ஊர் பூந்தோட்டம். இந்த ஊரில் கலைகளுக்கு அதிபதியாய் விளங்குகின்ற சரஸ்வதி அம்மன் திருத்தலம் அமைந்துள்ளது. புராண காலத்தில் அம்பாள்புரி என்றும், பூந்தோட்டம் என்றும் அழைக்கப்பட்ட இந்த ஊர், பிற்காலத்தில் இந்த ஊரை இரண்டாம் ராஜராஜ சோழன் தன் அவைப் புலவர் ஒட்டக்கூத்தருக்கு தானமாக வழங்கியதால் கூத்தனூர் என்று பெயர் பெற்று விளங்குகிறது.இங்கே சரஸ்வதி தேவி கன்னி சரஸ்வதியாக வீற்றிருந்து, தன்னை தரிசித்து வழிபடும் பக்தர்களுக்குக் கல்விச் செல்வத்தை அள்ளி வழங்கி அருள்புரிகிறாள். சரஸ்வதி தேவி இங்கே கன்னி சரஸ்வதியாக கோயில் கொண்டதன் பின்னணியில் ஒரு வரலாறு சொல்லப்படுகிறது.
பிரம்மதேவரும், சரஸ்வதி தேவியும் சத்தியலோகத்தில் இருந்தபடி அனைவருக்கும் அருள்பாலித்து வந்தனர். அப்போது சரஸ்வதி தேவிக்கு, 'எல்லோருக்கும் கல்வியும் ஞானமும் வழங்கும் தானே உயர்ந்தவள்' என்று ஓர் எண்ணம் ஏற்பட்டது. சரஸ்வதியின் எண்ணம் தெரிந்த பிரம்மதேவர் படைப்புத் தொழில் செய்வதால் தானே பெரியவன் என்று வாதிட்டார். முடிவில் இருவரும் ஒருவரை ஒருவர் சபித்துக்கொண்டனர். அதன்படி அவர்கள் இருவரும் சோழநாட்டில் புண்ணியகீர்த்தி - சோபனை ஆகியோருக்கு முறையே பகுகாந்தன், சிரத்தை என்ற குழந்தைகளாகப் பிறந்தனர். இருவரும் திருமண வயதை அடைந்தனர். பெற்றோர் இவர்களுக்கு ஏற்ற வரனைத் தேடினர். அப்போதுதான் இவர்கள் இருவருக்கும் தாங்கள் யார் என்ற விவரம் தெரிய வந்தது. ஆனால், ஒரு தாயின் குழந்தைகளாகப் பிறந்து, சகோதர முறையில் இருப்பதால், திருமணம் செய்துகொண்டு ஊராரின் கேலிக்கு ஆளாக விரும்பவில்லை. எனவே, இருவரும் சிவபெருமானைப் பணிந்து வணங்கி, தங்களின் இக்கட்டான நிலையைக் கூறினர். இந்த தர்மசங்கடத்தில் இருந்து எப்படி விடுபடுவது என்று ஆலோசனையும் கேட்டனர். ஆனால், ''சகோதர முறையில் உள்ள நீங்கள் திருமணம் செய்துகொள்வது முறையில்லை. சரஸ்வதி மட்டும் இங்கே கன்னியாக இருந்து, வழிபடும் பக்தர்களுக்கு கல்விச் செல்வத்தை வழங்கட்டும் என்று கூறி மறைந்தார்.
