Rajmachi Night Trek - Watching Fireflies and Trek to Shrivardhan Fort
Hi Guys, I recently trekked to Rajmachi which is in Lonavla, Maharashtra. It is one of the fewer places in Maharashtra where you can experience abundance of fireflies in the pre monsoon season when they perform mating. I visited this place in the 1st week of June, with Bhatkanti Maharashtrachi. It was a surreal experience with thousands of fireflies dancing around over your head while you trek towards the Rajmachi village. The next day we also trekked to Shrivardhan fort in Rajmachi and the view was breathtaking with clouds touching the mountains, its worth the walk.

Rajmachi Fort Trek | An Amazing Place For Trekking In Lonavala | Mumbai | Maharashtra
A glimpse at my trek to Rajmachi Fort, Lonavala.
Since I had forgotten my gopro cam, i had made only a few clips in my mobile.
Rising above the popular hill stations of Khandala and Lonavala; Rajmachi fort Trek is one of the most exciting trekking experiences in Maharashtra. Visible from Mumbai-Pune Expressway on right hand side of Borghat. It is a famous spot for trekking.
The height of this fort from sea level is 2710 feet and it offers an amazing view of the Sahyadri mountains and the backwaters of Shirota Dam. The fort consists of two Balekillas [Shrivardhan and Manaranjan] which are the main attraction points here
Although the trek itself does not include steep climbs, it requires a rigorous health endurance as you will have to walk almost 10kms at a stretch. Surrounded by huge waterfalls during monsoon, you can view the beautiful kataldhar waterfall from Shrivardhan Fort. Rajmachi Fort has many caves used by trekkers for night halt.
Its best to go there in during rains because rains keeps you fresh and energetic in that location. Near fort there is a very small town. The local people give their homes on rent and also provide food. The food is really very good and cheap too (keeping the location in mind).
Prominent landmark for the fort is Della Adventure park. From Della adventure park, Rajmachi fort is exactly 11.6 kms away. There is a Y shaped diversion in between the road from Della to Rajmachi. You got to take a left turn from here. The road on the right goes to a village called Valvand which is on a different side of Rajmachi.
You might want to park your vehicle near the diversion as the road after that is really bad. Its more like a dirt bike racing track.

#ShotinLGG6 #Maharashtratourism #Forts #Waterfalls #sidshinde15 #WeTheMorya
Rajamchi Fort (machi=plateau) is a combination of two fortresses Shrivardhan fort (Ballekilla) & Manaranjan fort (Ballekilla). Due to heavy rain and curfew, we could only climb the Shrivardhan fort (Manaranjan fort next time :). A very scenic view of Kataldhar Waterfall can be seen from the Rajmachi plateau.
There are two routes to the fort one is from Karjat (Raigad district), the Kondane caves routes from where a diversion leads to Rajmachi and the other easiest one is via Lonavla (Pune district).

Rajmachi trek | राजमाची किल्ला | shrivardhan fort
Rajmachi Fort is one of the many historical forts in the rugged hills of Sahyadri mountains (Western Ghats). It consists of two twin fortresses Shriwardhan Ballekilla and Manaranjan Balekilla, Udhewadi is a small village of about 22 houses situated on the machi, at the southern foot of Manaranjan Balekilla of Rajmachi Fort.
Rajmachi Fort is a popular destination for nature lovers, trekkers and for outdoor campers. In the rainy season from mid-June to mid-October, this region is all the more beautiful with clouds, silvery water falls, streams, lush green forests and meadows.
Local families at Udhewadi on Fort Rajmachi welcome trekkers and nature lovers. The local families provide food and camping accommodation to the tourists. The tourism has enabled the local community to give up traditional occupations like agriculture and cattle rearing.
Historically, Rajmachi Fort was a strategic fort to control Borghat (the Ghat between Khopoli and Khandala on Mumbai-Pune route) which was a historical trade route. It was in the possession of Angre family, the head of the Maratha navy in the 18th century.

Rajmachi Fort Trek | Shrivardhan Fort
A short video of trek to Shrivardhan Fort at Rajmachi.
Durgpremi Adventure | Rajmachi Trekk, Lonavala, Maharashtra, India
TREK ROUTE:
There are two ways to reach the Rajmachi fort. One is from Lonavla, roughly 20 km walk and the other is from “Kondivale” village,Karjat, gradually climb of around 4 km. For beginners, it would be better to trek from Lonavla as this is a much easier path. After completing the trek they can descend to “Kondivale” village Karjat.
Route: Lonavla ... Rajmachi... Karjat.
For 1 day trek reach Lonavla early in morning. From “Tungarli” village a rough road is there to village “Udhewadi” via Tungarli lake. “Udhewadi” is base village of Rajmachi fort.If you have a vehicle with you ,the road to “Udhewadi” village is a “Dirt-track”. Prefer SUV,its very difficult for a car or bike to reach “Udhewadi” due to bumpy, uneven, slippery, high gradient road.So it is advisable not to take vehicle to “Udhewadi”.
On the way there is famous “Horse shoe waterfall”.
There are two subforts of Rajmachi fort
1. SHRIVARDHAN fort 2. MANARANJAN fort.
For both peaks you need 1 night stay at “Udhewadi”. Food and accommodation is available at Udhewadi village at a marginal cost. For 1 day trek you may skip one of the peak.
Trekkers can come back from same route to reach “Lonavla”.
From “Udhewadi” village there is another route to “Karjat”. On this route first comes the “Kondana Caves” consist of 16 Buddhist caves.
After that reach to “Kondivale” village. From “Kondivale” village you will get shared 6-seater auto-rickshaw to reach “Karjat” railway station.
Difficulty Level: Medium
History:
The Rajmachi fort was constructed by the “Satavahanas”. In 1657, Shivaji Maharaj captured this fort along with other neighbouring forts from the Adilshahi ruler of Bijapur. In 1704, the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb captured the fort from the Marathas. However, the Marathas regained its control in 1705. In 1713, Shahu Maharaj handed over Rajmachi fort to Kanhoji Angre. Eventually in 1818 with the downfall of the Marathas, the British acquired the control of Rajmachi from Peshwas.
There are two subforts on Rajmachi --the taller one in the east is “Shrivardhan” fort and the other in the west is “Manaranjan” fort.” Kal Bhairava” temple is situated in the between “Shrivardhan” and “Manaranjan”.
The Buddhist caves on the western slope of Rajmachi plateau known as “Kondhane caves” were carved in the period around 200 BC. The existence of these ancient caves indicates that Rajmachi had been identified as an important place right from the Buddhist period.” Rajmachi” Fort has been declared as a protected monument.
Remains of big residential houses are found in the forest on the south side of the “Udhewadi”. A big water reservoir constructed about 200 years ago is situated further down from the forest mentioned above. A carved stone plate in the wall of the water reservoir indicates that it was built by Ramrav Narayanrav Deshmukh, Mamlatdar of “Danda-Rajpuri” near Murud Janjira in Raigad District. An ancient Shiva temple, built in Hemdpanti style, is situated on the western side of the water reservoir.

rajmachi trek...shreewardhan and yashodhan forts at rajmachi village...lonavla
Rajmachi is a wonderful village located in between two forts shreewardhan and yashodhan. This little village has a solar electric power plant which is the only source of electricity for this place.population there is also very less.the locals basically have adopted tourism as their profession apart from farming.
Its a 5hr walk from lonavla railway station but completely worth it during monsoon as u see it in the video.
If your planning for a trip to rajmachi do take flash lights, mosquito repellents and glucose with you.
The scenic beauty of this place will make u spellbound.
Do wear a good pair of trekking shoes as to reach the two forts the way is kindaa steep and dangerous.
