The idol of this temple Varada Vinayak is a swayambu (self originated) and was found in the adjoining lake in an immersed position in 1690 AD. This temple is said to be built in 1725AD by Subhedar Ramji Mahadev Biwalkar. The temple premises are on one side of a beautiful pond. The idol of this temple faces the east and has his trunk turned to the left. There is an oil lamp in this shrine which is said to be burning continuously since 1892. This temple also has the idol of Mushika, Navagraha Devtas and Shivalinga. There are 4 elephant idols guarding the 4 sides of the temple. In this Ashta Vinayak Temple devotees can enter the Garbagriha and pay their homage and respects to the idol personally. Devotees visit the Varadvinayak shrine throughout the year. During festivals like the Magha Chaturthi huge crowds can be seen in this temple.

अष्टविनायक महाड मंदिर महाराष्ट्रातील आठ (अष्ट) गणपती (विनायक) मंदिरांपैकी एक. विनायक (गणेश) हे नाव वरादविनायक हे आहे ज्याचा अर्थ असा की सर्वांच्या इच्छा पूर्ण करतो.हे मंदिर एक सुंदर ठिकाण आहे. बांबूच्या झाडात श्री दत्तात्रेय यांचे मंदिर आहे.

महड येथे वरद विनायक मंदिर हे मुंबई आणि पुण्याला जोडणारा जुना महामार्गालगत आहे. महाडचा वरदविनायक महाराष्ट्राच्या अष्ट विनायक मंदिरापैकी एक मानले जाते, गणेश संबंधित कथेत आठ उदाहरणे सांगितली जातात त्यापैकी हे एक. महड गाव रायगड जिल्ह्यातील खलापूर तालुक्यात आहे.पौराणिक कथा अशी आहे की वचकनावी नावाच्या ऋषीचा शासक रुकमांडा नावाच्या राजाने येथे भेट दिली आणि ऋषिपट्टणी मुकुंदाने राजाकडे त्यांचे आकर्षण व्यक्त केले. राजा रागाने तिच्याकडे पाहून तेथून निघून गेला . दरम्यान, देवतांचा राजा इंद्र भूतलावर अवतरला आणि त्याने तिच्या विचित्र हालचाली स्वीकारल्या. त्या दोघांकडून मुलगा ग्रुटशमधा यांचा जन्म झाला. मुलगा, त्याच्या जन्माच्या कथेविषयी उत्सुक होता आणि भद्रकावनात गणेशला संबंधात पापांची क्षमा करण्यासाठी प्रार्थना केली आणि भद्रकावना (आता महड) च्या वरदविनायकाने त्यांची प्रार्थना स्वीकार केली.

महडचा श्री वरदविनायक हा अष्टविनायकांपैकी सातवा गणपती. श्री वरदविनायकाचे मंदिर साधे, कौलारू असून मंदिराला घुमट आहे व त्याला सोनेरी कळस आहे. कळसावर नागाची नक्षी आहे. दगडी महिरप मंदिरात सिंहासनारूढ झालेल्या श्री वरदविनायकाची मूर्ती उजव्या सोंडेची आहे.

येथे पोहोचण्यासाठी खोपोली जवळचे रेल्वे स्थानक आहे. खोपोली गाठण्यासाठी ट्रेन आहेत. कर्जत (14 किलोमीटर) येथून मुंबई (बॉम्बे) बाहेरील गाड्या यांच्या थांब्याचे मुख्य स्टेशन आहे. तसेच मुंबई वरून लोकल ट्रेन ची सुविधा पण आहे.

Ashtavinayak Mahad Temple. One of the Eight (Ashta) Ganapati (Vinayak) Temples of Maharashtra. The name of this Vinayak (Ganesha) is Varad Vinayak meaning the one who blesses all the wishes. The temple is situated in a scenic place, and the new extension to the main temple is being made. Behind the temple is a small temple of Shri Dattatreya situated in Bamboo trees.

The Varadvinayak temple at Mahad is located on the highway linking Mumbai and Pune. Mahadcha Varadvinayak is considered to be one of the Ashta Vinayak shrines of Maharashtra, celebrating eight instances of legends related to Ganesha. Mahad village is situated in Khalapur taluka of Raigad District.Mahad is surrounded by picturesque surrounding.

Legend has it that a rishi by name Vachaknavi was visited by a ruler by name Rukmangada, and during the visit the rishipatni Mukundaa expressed her attraction to the king. The king turned her down leaving her seething in anger. In the meanwhile, Indra, the king of the Devas came down to the earth in the disguise of Rukmangada and accepted her amorous moves. An illegitimate son Grutshmadha was born out of their union. The son, learning of the story of his birth was grief stricken, and prayed to Ganesha in Bhadrakavana for absolvement of the sins of everyone concerned. His prayers were granted by Varadavinayak of Bhadrakavana (now Mahad).

Shree Dhondu Paudkar in 1690 A.D found the swayambhu idol of shree varadvinayak in al lake.This idol was kept in a nearby goddess temple for some time.afterwards in 1725 A.D Varadvinayak temple was built by peshva sardar ramji mahadev biwalkar & he gifted this to the Village.

Varadavinayak is portrayed, seated on an east facing throne. Stone images of his consorts Siddhi and Riddhi are also seen in the temple. A lamp in this temple is said to have been glowing uninterrupted for over a hundred years.

To reach here, nearest railway station is Khopoli. To reach Khopoli, there are trains
from Karjat (14Km.) which is the main station for all Mumbai (Bombay) bound trains from South India (Central Railway).
