Southwest China's Shuanghe Cave now officially longest in Asia

China's Shuanghe Cave Group has officially become the longest cave in Asia and the sixth longest in the world as researchers have ascertained its total length is at least 238.48 kilometers. The cave, located in Suiyang County of southwest China's Guizhou Province, contains numerous karst caves, underground fractures, waterfalls, rivers and naturally formed pits, which are important for geological and biological research.

Researchers Resume Exploration of China's Longest Cave in Southwest China

Chinese and French researchers recently resumed the exploration of China's longest cave in Suiyang County, southwest China's Guizhou Province.

With a detected length of 161.788 kilometers, the Shuanghe River Cave Group is the longest cave in China and the second longest in Asia.

According the researchers, they have been conducting cave explorations intermittently since 1986 and aim to reach 200 kilometers in the new phase of exploration starting from April 17.

The researchers said they have gained much information about the cave through previous explorations.

According to our analysis, there were several rivers passing through the Shuanghe Cave in the past and separate caves had separate rivers. Later, these rivers combined and formed this large and multi-layered cave group. Because of the neotectonics and crust uplist, more layers are created in the cave group. So far there are at least four to five layers. Because the cave roof is relatively high, stones eroding by dripping water create flower-like stalactites. The cave group is more than 350,000 years old, said Li Po, a researcher from Guizhou Mountain Resources Research Institute.

So far researchers have found bones of shelly creatures and even unknown creatures in the cave. They said further investigation will be conducted to study the bones.

Researchers said that the further the researchers went into the cave, the narrower the passages were. After walking dozens of kilometers', they had to crawl in order to proceed through the cave. However, after crawling for around 100 meters, researchers decided to stop and to figure out another route to continue.
