Wang's Compound is located in Jingsheng Town, Lingshi County, 35 kilometers from Pingyao Ancient City, Shanxi Province. It is a luxurious residence built during 1762-1811 by the descendants of the Wang Family, one of the Four Families of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) in Shanxi Province.
The Shuanglin Temple (Chinese: 双林寺; pinyin: Shuānglín Sì) is a large Buddhist temple in the Shanxi Province of China. It is situated in the countryside of Qiaotou village about 6 kilometres southwest of the ancient city of Pingyao. It is among the many cultural monuments located in the Pingyao, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site inscribed in 1997. The temple is protected by the state administration. Founded in the 6th century, the temple is notable for its collection of more than 2,000 decorated clay statues that are dated to the 12th-19th centuries. Its original name was Zongdu but it was renamed during the Northern Song Dynasty period as Shuanglin. It is nicknamed the museum of coloured sculptures. Most of them are dated to the period of the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties.

Pingyao is a Chinese city and county in central Shanxi province. It lies about 715 km from Beijing and 80 km from the provincial capital, Taiyuan. During the Qing Dynasty, Pingyao was a financial center of China. It is now renowned for its well-preserved ancient city wall, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Pingyao still retains its city layout from the Ming and Qing dynasties, conforming to a typical bagua pattern. More than 300 sites in or near the city have ancient ruins. Preserved Ming- and Qing-style residences number close to 4,000. The streets and storefronts still largely retain their historical appearance.
In the Spring and Autumn Period, the county belonged to the kingdom of Jin. It was part of the kingdom of Zhao in the Warring States Period. In the Qin Dynasty, it was known as Pingtao. During the Han Dynasty, it was known as Zhongdu county. In 1986, the People's Republic of China designated Pingyao as one of the Chinese Historic and Cultural Cities. It became a World Heritage Site in 1997, included also the outlying Zhenguo Temple and Shuanglin Temple.

CHIU CHI LING Shaolintour-Xiangqiao Kaiyuan Zhenguo Temple
Zhenguo Temple is a Buddhist temple located 10 km from Pingyao in the village of Hadongcun, in Shanxi Province, China. The temple's oldest hall, the Wanfo Hall, was built in 963 during the Northern Han dynasty, and is notable for featuring very large brackets that hold up the roof and flying eaves. The sculptures inside the hall are among the only examples of 10th century Buddhist sculpture in China.
The history of the temple begins in 963, when it was recorded that Wanfo Hall was built. The date is written on a beam in the hall, and is also the date given by a local history of Pingyao county written in the 19th century. A stela written in 1819 also confirms this date. Wanfo Hall is the oldest building at Zhenguo temple, and is the only surviving building that dates from the short-lived Northern Han dynasty. Although little is known of the temple's history, stelae record that it was renovated in 1540 and in 1816. In 1997, along with Pingyao city and Shuanglin Temple, the Zhenguo temple was inscribed on the World Heritage list as 'Ancient City of Pingyao'.

Although Pingyao is only a small county in Shanxi Province, it is really a famous tourist destination in China, because it is one of the top four undamaged ancient towns in China. Below are the main Pingyao’s attractions which enjoy high popularity. Mian Shan (Mian Mountain) is noted for its natural scenery and cultural and religious relics. The rest attractions are all in the ancient town, including family courtyard, ancient castle, Mingqing Ancient Street, ancient bank, ancient city wall and temple.

July and August 2017 we visited Pingyao. Pingyao is a county in central Shanxi province in China. It is located approximately 715 kilometres southwest of Beijing. During the Qing Dynasty, Pingyao was a financial centre of China. Today it is one of the few remaining historic cities, surrounded by an ancient guarding wall. A real beauty.

The Qiao Family Compound (simplified Chinese: 乔家大院; traditional Chinese: 喬家大院; pinyin: Qiáojiā Dàyuàn) is located in Qi County, Shanxi, China, approximately 30 kilometers northeast of the historic City of Pingyao. It is famous for being the chief location in the Zhang Yimou film Raise the Red Lantern. Construction began in 1756 during the reign of the Qianlong Emperor in the Qing dynasty and was completed some time in the 18th century. The courtyard estate covers 9000 square meters and has 313 rooms with 4000 square meters within 6 large courtyards and 19 smaller courtyards. Its original Chinese name was Zai Zhong Tang .

The Ancient City of Pingyao is UNESCO World Heritage site for being an exceptionally well-preserved example of a traditional Han Chinese city, founded in the 14th century. Its urban fabric shows the evolution of architectural styles and town planning in Imperial China over five centuries.
The impressive city walls (total length 6 km/3.7 mi) were constructed in 14th century. Most buildings in the Old city are from the Ming and Qing dynasties. During the late Qing Dynasty, Pingyao was the financial center of China.

Qiao Family's Compound
Situated in the central part of Qiao Town, Qi Xian County in Shanxi Province, Qiao Family's Compound occupies an area of 8,274 square meters (about two acres) with a construction area of 3,870 square meters (about one acre). It consists of six main courtyards, twenty smaller courtyards and 313 rooms. The family built the complex like a castle for safety considerations, as well as to create tranquil surroundings in which to relax, away from the furious competition of the business world.

After a bit of trouble with the trains (not knowing Beijing had no less than four main railway stations, I went to catch my bullet train to Pingyao from the wrong one and consequently missed it, luckily not only did I get a full refund but also the next train a few hours later on that same day – phew…) I arrived in smoggy Pingyao! This really felt like old China (this city dates back some 2,700 years) and staying in a quaint hotel in the middle of the city was surreal, I don’t think I saw even one westerner at this place!
