Shangri-la Day 2 - Potatso National Park, Wild Yak, and Highland Lakes.
On our second day, we hired a private driver and headed to the Potatso (Pudacuo) National Park. It is China's first national park and has a huge biodiversity in this biologically unique part of China.
In the park, we saw wild yak, my first every wild chipmunk experience (not on camera), wild horse, and a bunch of jumping fish. There was also a wide range of fauna and flora, by Chinese standards, which made walking around here a refreshing change to Kunming city life.
I'm still getting used to using the video stabiliser and I realise that I am panning it a little quickly in places. Also the editing software seems to have made the video pan a little jerkily - something I will try to resolve for the next video. Also, I didn't realise until it was too late how many times I called it Potato National Park. This was my way of remembering the name, but I didn't mean to include it so often in the videos!

Potatso National Park is located in the centre of Three Parallel Rivers world natural heritage area, belonging to northwest of Yunnan Province,China. It is made up of the wetlands of international importance Bita Lake Nature Reserve and the Three Parallel Rivers world natural heritage Redhill Area’s Shudu Lake. The park is 22 kilometers away from the Shangri-La county.The park is in Northwestern Yunnan Province’s alpine cold temperate coniferous forest vegetation zones, the highest point of it is in the northern peak of Mi li Tang mountain, 4159 meters above sea level. Potatso National Park is the first national park in China, which set environmental protection, ecological and cultural tourism, environmental education and community benefit functions as one, under the premise of protecting the country and the world natural and cultural heritage, sightseeing opportunities for domestic and foreign tourists.

A couple hours outside of Zhongdian is this huge lake. We went to the cheaper less populated area. It was mainly us, Yaks, and two horses.

The word Shangri-la first appeared in James Hilton's 1933 novel Lost Horizon; the story of three American pilots who, while flying over the Sino-Indian air route during World War II, crash-land in the midst of Paradise. This place of tranquility and peace is described as having snow-covered mountains, grasslands, and red soil plateaus, populated by Tibetan people, with three rivers traversing the landscape. A half a century of research has determined that the beautiful Shangri-la described in Lost Horizon is, in fact, the city of Zhongdian, located in the Deqen Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture (also known as Diqing) of Yunnan Province. What a coincidence that Shangri-la means Sun and Moon in the Hear in the Tibetan Language while in the hearts of the Tibetan people, Zhongdian is Paradise. Degen Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture is situated in the northwest Yunnan Province, with Tibet to the west and Sichuan to the east.

West Mountain and Dragon Gate
A visit to Dragon Gate in the Western Hills area near Kunming, China. A cable car ride near the end of the video shows the lush vegetation on the hillside and provides a breathtaking view of Lake Dianchi down below. I was fortunate to have Fan Zhang as my model and tour guide!
