Shumen Fortress in Bulgaria
A visit to the historic fortress of Shumen in Bulgaria where the allied Christian armies beat the Muslim Ottoman Turk army in 1444 AD
Shumen Fortress, Bulgaria
The Shumen fortress is situated about 3 km westwards from the suburbs of the modern town. It is at the very end of the Shumen plateau. The imposing south-east tower and the remainders of the fortification wall loom from far away to the approaching visitor.
Archeological investigations have proven that the fortress existed in he Early Iron Age (12-th 11-th century BC). Traces of Tracian, Roman and Byzantine settlements were discovered there. The Shumen fortress played a significant role during the First (7-th 11-th centuries) and Second (12 th 14-th centuries) Bulgarian Kingdoms.
The thoroughly studied and skillfully arranged remainders of fortification walls, civil and religious buildings, make the fortress one of the most attractive open-air museums in Bulgaria. Part of the rich and diverse archaeological finds of ceramicware, metalware, stone sculptures and others, are exhibited in small museum in the fortress.

Част от продължаващия и тази година наш нов проект - Шуменската крепост, намира се на два километра западно от град Шумен. В района се намира важен кръстопът на маршрути, свързващи дунавския бряг (при Силистра) с Адрианопол и Константинопол, и северното черноморско крайбрежие със западните български земи./The Shumen fortress is an archaeological site overlooking the city of Shumen in north-eastern Bulgaria. It is an ancient fortress with historical links to a village nearby traced to early Iron Age and later owned by the Thracians in the 5th century BC. Then, from 2nd to 4th centuries AD, it was controlled by the Romans who built towers and walls, and it was refurbished by the Byzantines as their garrison town.
