The Si Phan Don (Lao: ສີ່ພັນດອນ; meaning 4000 islands) is a riverine archipelago in the Mekong River, Champasak Province in southern Laos.
Si Phan Don is part of the Khong District (that includes the islands and a part of the mainland in the east).
Si Phan Don is characterised by numerous islands, half of which are submerged when the Mekong River is in flood.
The principal islands of Si Phan Don are Don Khong (the largest), Don Som (the second largest), Don Det and Don Khon.
Si Phan Don is bordering Cambodia and historical and cultural ties link the people on both side of the border. Pakse is the closest of the bigger cities in Laos to the area.

The remains of the first railway in Laos, the Don Det – Don Khon narrow gauge railway, built by the French to bypass the Khone Phapheng Falls and enable vessels, freight and passengers to travel along the Mekong River.
Freshwater Irrawaddy dolphins (Pakha) that can be viewed by boat off Don Khon island. They are considered highly endangered.
The Khone Phapheng Falls, a succession of impassable raging rapids that gave rise to the construction of the railway.

2015.11.26 - Pakse to Si Phan Don in Laos
At 9.30am we took a bus from Ubon Ratchathani directly to Pakse, Laos (140km). At 11.30am we arrived at the border crossing town of Chong Mek for immigration check. At 12noon we departed Chong Mek and arriving at Pakse bus station at 12.40pm for lunch. From here at 2pm we took a big songthaew to Nakasong Pier (151km) arriving at 5pm, where we took a boat to Don Det Island, one of the islands in Si Phan Don or four thousand islands. I must say that today was the longest traveling time as we started at 9.30am and arriving at our destination at about 7pm - almost 10 hours of traveling time. Nevertheless, we all enjoyed the journey and at day-end we had more Beer Lao during dinner to reflect on the long journey.

Si Phan Don (Four Thousand Islands, in Lao ສີ່ພັນດອນ) is a group of islands in the Mekong River in Southern Laos. It is located in the Khong district, Champasak province. There are many islands of different sizes, many of them are under water during the monsoon, when the river increases its body of water. The main islands are, by size: Don Kong, Don Som, Don Det and Don Khon. This river archipelago is located just at the boarder with Cambodia. The nearest main city is Pakse (118 kilometers to the north) and Champasak, were the Wat Pheu is located, at 92 kilometers to the north. Si Phan Don includes Khone Phapheng, the Falls of the Mekong, the biggest in Southeast Asia.

Mekong & Don Khon (Laos)
(EN) Khong Island or Don Khong is the largest island and the seat of administration in the Si Phan Don riverine archipelago located in the Mekong River, Khong District, Champasak Province, southern Laos.
The island is 18 kilometres (11 mi) long (north-south), and 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) at its widest point. It has a population of approximately 55,000, mainly concentrated in the two villages Muang Saen (west) and Muang Khong (east); the latter is the de facto capital of the island as well as the regional seat of government. The former President of Laos, Khamtai Siphandon has a residence on the island, which is a possible explanation for the high-quality of infrastructure, such as asphalted roads and electricity, on Khong Island. Locals tend to travel on longtail boats.
Khong Island is noted for its natural beauty and is a growing tourist destination. Many tourists combine their visit to the island with a visit to nearby Don Det and Don Khon islands, where it is possible to view the Khone Phapheng Falls.
