Around four hundred and twenty kilometres from the Thai metropolis of Bangkok in the far north of the central plains, is the legendary city of Si Satchanalai. Today only sad ruins testify to the splendour of the former twin city and ancient capital of Sukhothai. However, after Si Satchanalai had lain in ruins for many centuries some areas of the city were restored by teams of dedicated archaeologists. The city dates back to the 13th century and at that time Si Satchanalai was the official residence of the viceroy of Thailand’s first important kingdom during the Sukhothai Period. The Wat Chang Lom Temple is one of the most remarkable sanctuaries in the heart of the old city. The builder of this temple site was one of the most famous rulers of Sukhothai, King Ramkhamhaeng. Close to the river banks of the Menam Yom is the great Laterite Prang that was originally built in early Khmer design and was later embellished with stucco work. This cult building is the most important attraction of the Wat Chao Chan. Later, Si Satchanlai lost its political influence. Shortly after this the people began to vacate their city leaving not only their fine statues but also the place that they loved.

Exploring The Anicient Ruins of Si Satchanalai and Sukhothai
Warning: This video contains a lot of temples and ruins, intermittent with a British guy talking on a bike. Also, if you ever visit these places - do not climb on the monuments, I regret doing this, especially considering my background in Environmental Management, I should have known better.
Really wasn't in the mood for vlogging this day but eventually got into it! I had been working a lot this week and was incredibly tired... the journey definitely didn't help also! But it was worth it - if you are ever in the area, definitely check out these two temples.

The Si Satchanalai Historical Park is a historical park in Si Satchanalai district, Sukhothai Province, northern Thailand. The park covers the ruins of Si Satchanalai and Chaliang. Si Satchanalai, which literally means City of good people, was founded in 1250 as the second center of the Sukhothai Kingdom and as a residence of the crown prince in the 13th and 14th centuries.

Visiting Sukhothai Historical Park at Night
Most people only think about visiting Sukhothai Historical park during the day. I highly recommend you try to visit it at night when it is lit up it is beautiful
Even though the statues and ruins are lit up you might want to bring a torch with you. The lights are focused on the ruins and not the ground which is quite dark.
UNESCO World Heritage City, Sukhothai houses a vast number of historical sites and temple ruins. As the first capital of Siam, the Sukhothai Kingdom (1238 – 1438) was the cradle of Thai civilisation – the birthplace of Thai art, architecture and language. ‘Sukhothai’ means ‘the dawn of happiness’, and the kingdom did enjoy an extended period of peace and prosperity until it was annexed by the Ayutthaya Kingdom. Due to its location (about 427km north of Bangkok and sitting relatively in the middle of nowhere) Sukhothai sees a smaller number of visitors than its more popular counterpart Ayutthaya. Sukhothai’s historical sites, however, are by no means less splendid. Most historically significant temple ruins are housed inside the Sukhothai Historical Park and nearby Si Satchanalai Historical Park. Apart from visiting the historical sites, Sukhothai itself is a quiet rural city where you can still relish the charms of Thailand’s rustic lifestyle.

This is a summary of an awesome trip to Sukhothai, the 1st capital of Thailand from 1237-1378 and a little history of Thailand. We also visited the other 2 historical parks about 1 hour drive. The best time to visit these parks would be around 4-5pm so you can catch the sunset and it's cooler too. The coolest months to visit Thailand would be Jan & Feb.

Until now the village people there preserved the old and unique technical knowledge for ceramics and weaving.

Welcome to Sukhothai, the first Kingdom of Siam! Sukhothai Historical Park is located in northern Thailand about a 4-5 hour drive from Bangkok. There are over 193 ruins, a palace, many temples and the largest one being Wat Mahatat.
The best time to come is around 9am, it takes three hours to see the entire historical park. You can rent a bike, you can walk and you can pay an extra 50 baht and even bring your car. Follow me through Sukhothai!
Wat Si Chum the most visited monument in Sukhothai Historical Park.
The buddha that you see measures over 50ft in height and 30 feet wide. The name of the buddha is Phra Acana which means the one that is not afraid. The best time come is in the morning, it's an extra fee because it is outside the city walls.
If you have an extra day in Sukhothai I suggest you visit it's sister city of Si Satchanalai. It's also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. What you can visit here are over 300 ruins, buddhist shrines and temples dating back to the 13th century.
I suggest you visit the main shrine of Wat Phra Si Ratana Mahathat. It is located outside the historical park which dates back to 1237 A.D. Here you can see free standing columns and a massive buddha.

Sukhothai, ‘Dawn Of Happiness’, this, the name of the first capital of Thailand, once marked the beginning of a new epoch. During the course of its one hundred and twenty year flowering period several of the city’s impressive buildings were created such as the magnificent Wat Mahathat Temple.Beyond the old city walls is the fascinating Wat Si Chum Temple which owes its national fame to the huge seated Buddha sculpture of Phra Atchana that is more than eleven metres high and is one of the largest and most imposing Buddha statues in Thailand. Picturesque yet almost sad the century old ruins seem to be reflected within the water of the nearby moats, canals and ponds yearning for a bygone time when the area was full of buildings that in turn were full of life. But despite its continuing decay Sukhothai is still a truly magical experience.
