Siab Bazaar, Samarkand:
Visiting Samarkand and not paying a visit to Siab market means missing one of the most interesting adventures. The oriental market is a special place where you can feel a live atmosphere of the ancient city. Many years ago, bazaars served as the main strategic points on the Great Silk Road trade development. Siab Bazaar in Samarkand is one of the most interesting and ancient must see sights.
Peculiarities of the Siab Bazaar
Siab market is conveniently located, with the great mosque of Bibi-Khanim in only few minutes’ walk away. There is another landmark not far from the bazaar – Hazrat Khizir Mosque. The area of the market impresses with its 5 ha of trade rows. The main entrance is done in the form of a lofty three-fold arch adorned with blue mosaic. Trading rows are under tents that protect the bazaar from a burning sun in summer and from wind and rain in winter.Siab Bazaar is a dekhkan (agricultural) market; there you will mainly find vegetables and fruits grown in Uzbekistan, as well as local hand-made products. Trading rows are conditionally divided according to types of goods. Local sellers say that Siab dried fruits, sweets and nuts are so tasty that make residents of the capital city travel there for their portion. It is also possible to meet huge number and kinds of spices at the bazaar, even the rare ones. Apart from the edible products, you can buy pieces from local artisans and masters.
Special attention should be given to a bread row, as Samarkand bread is a special sort of local flour product. You can see more than 17 kinds of bread at the Siab market.
What is an oriental market without tasting?! there, as in any other bazaar, kind-hearted vendors will not only allow you to taste the product before purchasing, but will also insist on it. Surely, the main subtlety of the oriental bazaar is a bargaining tradition. Each buyer has a duty to trade with the seller before a purchase. The point is not about reducing the price, rather a habit that Asian dwellers have formed from the childhood. The one who shows the talent will gain in the end.
Except fresh and various goods, Siab market in Samarkand has another feature – this is the place where you can find out the latest news and events happening in the city. Uzbek people are very sociable and people get involved in conversations even with strangers. After visiting this bazaar, you will dive into the atmosphere of Samarkand festivity, mystery and will be able to understand the historical city on the Great Silk road. Along with ripen fruits and hot bread; you will take with yourself a piece of oriental atmosphere that will stay with you forever.
Siab Bazaar. Samarqand. Uzbekistan. Сиабский базар. Самарканд. Узбекистан. 2016-05-08

Bazaars in Uzbekistan
If traveling through the different countries of the world is the best way to discover their essence, a stop in a bazaar to let yourself be carried away by the display of noises, aromas and colors will always be an important goal for travelers, for those who want to get involved in the hustle and bustle in order to glimpse the roots of the society that surrounds them, as well as for those who are content to enjoy the bazaar as a purely aesthetic experience, an authentic gift for the senses.
Uzbekistan is situated in the region made up of the group of countries and cultures of Central Asia. It is an area with specific features derived from the various peoples who settled the territory and engaged in vigorous trade.
The market is an economic institution governed by its own rules. It makes trading activity more efficient. It means law and order, agreements, valuations, coins, weights and measures, contracts, guarantees...
The market has played a fundamental role in an urban economy that has had to guarantee foodstuffs and raw materials.
Uzbek markets are a reflection of the ancient traditions and custom of the local people. They reflect the complex, dynamic process in which, as well as goods, people, knowledge, values, ideas and tastes have circulated.
In addition to trade, markets serve other functions that enable us to witness the rhythms of peoples and their traditions. The market is a highly socialized place, a synthesis of specific cultural codes. Markets help to preserve the memories of places. Even in these modern times, all forms of trade are still in existence, from the most primitive rituals of selling and buying goods to the most modern.
People still trade in the open air, on the ground, or use improvised structures such as tables or wood benches to form covered stalls or open air stands, from motor vehicles, temporary booths, or other bases.
Just as in the past, in present times we may find all varieties of vegetables and fruits in the local bazaars: water melons, melons, peaches, cherries, pears, apples, apricots, tomatoes, cucumbers, potatoes, rice, peanuts, almonds, pistachios and wide variety of spices and dried fruits that come from various regions of Uzbekistan and other parts of Asia; as well as other products that were once unknown, that have only been introduced or established through the bazaar.

Uzbekistan STREET FOOD Tour of Chorsu Bazaar - Hasib, Honim & Norin | Tashkent, Uzbekistan
My whirlwind time in Tashkent, Uzbekistan continued with an unforgettable Uzbekistan street food tour of Chorsu Bazaar, where I tried incredible traditional dishes like hasib, honim, and norin. Come along with me on my exciting Uzbekistan street food market visit!
FEATURED:
Bobur:
Chorsu Bazaar is the largest and oldest traditional bazaar in Tashkent. Inside the massive, domed complex, you can find vendors selling fresh fruits, vegetables, and vendors. There are also vendors outside selling street food, and a nearby market that sells crafts and silks.
We headed to the left, straight to the food. There was a small vegetable market, where I could see cucumber, peppers, tomatoes, and much more!
The street food was down some stairs and to the right. I could see people eating somsas and corn. The smell was incredible! I started with some lamb sausage made of intestines called hasib. It was super tender and was full of flavor! Then I tried some horse meat with cheese called norin. The horse meat was dense and gamy, but so tasty!
Next, I tried honim, which is like a dumpling made with tomatoes, chilies, and onion. We took some honim, norin, and hasib to a nearby table to eat in the communal dining hall. The hasib was down in a soup. The tender meat absorbed the flavor of the broth. I could tell it had never been frozen!
The homim was filled with potatoes and topped with onion. The flavor was similar to an Italian pasta. The dough was thin and you get lots of filling. The potatoes inside are thinly sliced. I served us some tea for my throat.
The narib was like a horse salad. The cheese was really nice and didn’t have a lot of flavor. Most of the flavor was in the horse meat. I loved the crunch of the onions.
Then, I went with the beef kebab, which is cooked in lamb fat. It was phenomenal! The combination of the two was insane. It’s one of the best kebabs I’ve ever had in my life! It had a bread crust. But the hasib was my favorite!
I woke up with no voice, but the green tea was helping!
The meal cost me about 56,000 som, or about $5 or $6 USD. Everyone was so nice and friendly. Next, we found some plov, which is the national dish. It’s a mix of rice, raisins, vegetables, peppers, egg, and beef.
The main section of the bazaar had lots of souvenirs like clothes, pottery, hand-painted plates, and more. Finally, we headed into the domed section of the complex. It was all meat and spices, as well as dried fruits, nuts, and spices. It felt like a massive stadium! The smell was amazing!
There were lamb, beef, horse, and chicken everywhere. The butcher taught me to chop some meat. Then I saw some huge horse sausage, a horse heart, and some huge beef liver. There were so many cuts of meat, as well as organ meat, cow bones, and more.
On the second floor were nuts, dried fruits, and spices. From there, I had an amazing view of the whole domed market. I tried a dried apricot, which I loved! It was like fruit chewing gum. Then, I tried a prune, which was very dense and dry. They’re dried in the shade, so they don’t lose all their moisture!
Next, I had a dried kiwi, which was the best kiwi ever. It was nice, moist, and dense. There were also platters of nuts and fruits. There were hundreds of vendors. Then, we visited the souvenir market.
We passed restaurants, fruits, and spices to get there. The aroma was unreal! We passed through a maze-like clothing market. Everything was super affordable.
The souvenir shop had lots of vests and figurines of old men. There were also beautiful traditional hats, leather boots, and more. I got a fruit bowl, a jewelry box for my niece, and a hat as a gift. What a day!
I hope you enjoyed my tour of Chorsu Bazaar! If you did, please give it a thumbs up, leave a comment, and subscribe so you don’t miss my upcoming videos!

CITY OF BLUE TILES | Samarkand, Uzbekistan
I made it to Uzbekistan! The first real stop is Samarkand - a beautiful historic city. We wandered the city visiting Guri Amir, the madrasas at Registan, Bibi-Khanym Mosque, Shah-i-Zinda, and Siob Bazaar. The tiled buildings are what really stood out to me. It was beautiful!
There is so much history in Samarkand, there was no way I was going to be able to share everything I learned. You will have to research about the people and places... or you know, go see it for yourself. ????
Samarkand was a good place to start of my journey through Uzbekistan.
Much love and happy travels
