Tulum - SIAN KA'AN - Punta Allen Biosphere Reserve 2017
Sian Ka'an is a biosphere reserve in the municipality of Tulum in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
In the language of the Mayan peoples who once inhabited this region, Sian Ka'an means 'Origin of the Sky'. Located on the east coast of the Yucatán peninsula, this biosphere reserve contains tropical forests, mangroves and marshes, as well as a large marine section intersected by a barrier reef. It provides a habitat for a remarkably rich flora and a fauna comprising more than 300 species of birds, as well as a large number of the region's characteristic terrestrial vertebrates, which cohabit in the diverse environment formed by its complex hydrological system.
The diversity of life in Sian Ka'an is exceptional. The tropical forests are home to charismatic mammals such as Jaguar, Puma, Ocelot and Central American Tapir. The property also provides habitat for a large number of resident and migratory bird species. There is a great diversity of marine life, including the West Indian Manatee, four species of nesting marine turtles and hundreds of fish species. About a third of the property is comprised of highly diverse and productive mangrove communities, of vital importance to fisheries in the broader region. Hundreds of forested islands, locally known as Petenes, emerge from the flooded marshes, some reaching over a kilometre in diameter. A geological, biological and cultural particularity are the Cenotes, deep natural sinkholes harbouring fascinating life forms, many of them endemic. This karst phenomenon results from collapsing limestone exposing groundwater.

While the entire Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve is vast, our video shows you some of the amazing sights in just the small section between Tulum and the little fishing town of Punta Allen.

Sian Ka'an Lagoon Canal Boat Ride and Swim Biosphere Reserve Mexico
Sian Ka'an boat ride and canal swim across freshwater lagoons using ancient Mayan dug canal systems. All the water is freshwater in these large coastal canals. The current whisks you along at about 2 miles per hour. The boat driver drops you off on one end and you walk back using a wooden boardwalk system across mangrove and flooded grasses.
The area is a biosphere reserve in the municipality of Tulum in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. It was established in 1986 and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
Once at the lagoon, we take a boat ride into the lagoon for our journey into the clear waters of the Muyil lagoon to a man-made canal on the other side. The Mayans dug out the canal 1,000 years ago as a part of a trade route that linked the Muyil lagoon with its larger neighboring lagoon called Chunyaxche. Ancient Mayans traded salt, incense, gum, honey, wood and animals skins with others from Guatemala and Honduras. On the other side of Chunyaxche lagoon we go into another canal that is natural and much deeper.

Boca Paila at Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, Mexico
Sian Ka'an, is a Mayan phrase for Where The Sky Is Born, was the first established Biosphere Reserve in Mexico.. The park is sanctuary for the great diversity of plants and animals that live in the savannahs, dunes, wetlands, mangroves and lagoons of the reserve. It is a major nesting ground of two endangered sea turtles species, as well as the adorable manatee. All told, the park is home to nearly 350 species of birds, and over 100 different species of mammals - a true birding paradise.
Sian Ka'an is also a major fishing ground, and is situated on 110km of the second largest barrier reef in the world. It boats many distinct ecosystems - Coral Reef, Beaches, Dunes, Wetlands, Mangroves, Savannahs, Cenotes, Hummocks, Tasistales, Fresh and Brackish Water Lagoons, and Low Tropical Forest. This is truly a legendary natural attraction.

Yucatan Cenotes, Tulum Street Food, and Jog into the Sian ka'an Biosphere
I love Mexico and Ali loves Mexico, so I decided to surprise her with a Mexican adventure for her birthday. We landed in Cancun, rented a car, and headed south with no plans. We stopped by Cenote Cristalino for a quick dip, got a fish pedicure, ate amazing street food in Tulum and went for a nice run in the Sian Kaan biosphere.

Punta Allen ????, Reserva de la Biosfera SIAN KA’AN ???????????? ???????? ( Drone-Gopro )
