Siauliai and Hill of crosses (Lithuania) — Šiauliai y Montaña de cruces, Lietuva, Lituania
Tour of the Hill of crosses (Kryžių kalnas) Lithuania, UNESCO
This is a place of legends and peaceful revolt it carries a powerful testament of devotion mourning and freedom. Kryžių kalnas, first mentioned in writing in 1850 this was a place of mourning used by relatives of the victims of the Russian regime. The tsar forbids families to honour their dead refusing proper burials in cemeteries trying to suppress national identity and religious expression, the result was this Hill where crosses would appear by night only to be later removed by the tsar and again reappear. During the Soviet era planting, a cross was an arrestable offence. The place was bulldozed several times all the paths leading to this hill covered and ditches dug at its base yet somehow more crosses would appear overnight!
Other stories are that the Virgin Mary asked believers to cover the holy place with crosses in the late 19th century, or that this was a place of pagan traditions and sacred fires were lit here and tended by celestial virgins but most locals told me the first legend.
Pope John Paul II
In 1993 the Pope celebrated mass here in front of thousands of people and is message is still on a papal cross on the mountain:
Thank you, Lithuanians, for this Hill of Crosses which testifies to the nations of Europe and to the whole world the faith of the people of this land
How many crosses are on the Hill of Crosses (Kryžių kalnas) in Lithuania?
By most accounts, more than 100,000 placed here for nearly two centuries, and many more were destroyed by the Russian regime.
What's the best time to visit?
Surely when it's not raining or snowing, I can't imagine being here on a rainy day. Because this is 12Km outside of Siauliai visitors tend to arrive in groups (by Bus).
We went just before lunch and still, there were quite a lot of people, nothing that would prevent you from properly seeing the Hill though. Because this is quite isolated there is no lack of parking places either on the private (paid) parking near the entrance or on the main road.
Do you need to pay?
No, there are plenty of small shops and souvenir places where you can buy your own cross but other than that only the private parking os paid.
Where is the hill of crosses?
About 12 Km north of Siauliai, in Northern Lithuania.

Having left Vilnia, I entered the rural town of Shaulingyishi near the northwest for two and a half hours. There are many crosses on the hill that seem to have gathered somebody in the hill country where the house is visible. There are hundreds of hundreds of small and big crosses on this rugged hill, with no margin to make it, forming the hills of the Holy Places and the Cross. Today, the growing crisscross hill is a sacred place where 80% of the population lives in Lithuania, a Catholic city. The crucifixes are built with a path left by one passer. Some seem to be made of tools, others are made up of two pencils, others are hanged on other crosses. The cross built from the bottom is the unwavering faith of the Lithuanians. Lithuania did not exist in the 19th century. We were part of the Russian Empire. The Lithuanians caused two uprisings, but all went back to failure and were suppressed. After that, of course, persecution of Lithuanians began. Some were deported to Siberia, some died in battle, and the bereaved could not even get their bodies back. Instead, the bereaved families began to build these symbolic crosses. It was a peaceful resistance. We were a Catholic, not a communist, but a way to make it clear that Lithuanians were not Russians. The Soviet authorities have pushed the hills into bulldozers and burned the crosses, but the next day they built the cross again. The 100th anniversary of Independence that came to the hill that kept it. Some people celebrate a day with someone they love, and others look for hope as if they are getting close. I'll hang this cross here. Then good things will happen and our wishes will come true. What is your wish is a secret. There were bad things. My husband left the world, and my granddaughter died. Now a new granddaughter has to be born. Come here with such problems and shake it off. Then maybe he'll let me go. On this cross is a baby angel that resembles a child. I pray that grandmother and baby angel, who carefully tied the knot in prayer for the healthy birth of the granddaughter, will bring happiness.

The Hill of Crosses, Kryziu Kalnas, located in city of Siauliai, Lithuania. Standing upon a small hill are many hundreds of thousands of crosses that represent Christian devotion and a memorial to Lithuanian nation indentity. The Hill of Crosses is a solemn testimony to the suffering, endurance and love of Lithuanians for their Catholic Faiths. the origin of the custom of placing crosses on the Hill of Corsses is unclear but it is proposes that this tradition began after the 1831 uprising of the Polish and Lithuanians Armies against the Russians. After the battle, the Lithuania has always lived under the oppressive violence of the Russians, only gaining total independence from Russian in 1991.
During Soviet occupation of the area that lasted from 1944 to 1991, the Hill of Crosses become a symbol of defiance. Three times during the Soviet occupation, the hill and its crosses were bulldozed. Despite these attempts to end the symbolism of the site, both locals and pilgrims soon once again begin erecting crosses. The exact number of crosses is unknown, but estimates put it at about 55,000 in 1990 and 100,000 in 2006. Thousands visit the site each year with the most famous visit occurring in 1993 when Pope John Paul II cam to dedicate the site. A stone marker bearing his words, Thank You, Lithuanians, for this hill of crosses which testifies to the nations of Europe and to the whole world the faith of the people of the land now lies at the foot of the hill. A hermitage has been erected nearby to assist visitors and the faithful are welcome to add their contribution to this unusual Hill.
Today, the crosses number in the hundred of thousands. This eerie place attracts both locals and tourists. Walking among numerous crosses, some decorated with devotion to loved ones, one can hear the rosaries rattle in the wind. This little hillock has long been a potent symbol of suffering, hope, devotion, and the undefeated faith of the Lithuanian people.

At first glance, this place looks like a cross cemetery hill. There are literally countless cross form the forest on low hill. The cross is also a huge variety of size and shape also jegakgak appearance of Jesus Christ. The cross is unknown exactly the number depends on the person speaking from one hundred thousand to several tens of thousands. In addition to the cross made of the material also it varies. It's not only a cross in. Separate symbol of Judaism and David are like a charm like nothing seen in a Japanese shrine. It started to build a cross where it started to build a large amount from the 14th century that it was an honor to sacrifice people when the anti-Russian uprising that took place in 1831 and 1863. Nowadays it mainly built in time to the origins of thanks. Even more people to pray through varied as the cross. It is said also to the Soviet-era Lithuanian national shrines of the Holy Land, as well as the entire Catholic. It beorimyeon push the Soviets bulldozed in the day to avoid the repetition of the hills that Lithuania will build again in the evening. Now cross the hill is becoming a world-class tourist attractions beyond the sights of Lithuania. Amazing. The more pictures you take are more diverse cross looks. Very surprised and think.
