Wisata Indonesia : Taman Nasional Siberut Sumatera Barat Indonesia, Mopon ID

The Mentawai Islands are a chain of about seventy islands and islets off the western coast of Sumatra in Indonesia. Siberut (4,030 km²) is the largest of the islands. The other major islands are Sipura, North Pagai (Pagai Utara) and South Pagai (Pagai Selatan). The islands lie approximately 150 km off the Sumatran coast, across the Mentawai Strait. The indigenous inhabitants of the islands are known as the Mentawai people. The Mentawai Islands have become a noted destination for surfing.
Ecology
Mentawai Islands topography
The islands have been separated from Sumatra since the mid-Pleistocene period, which has allowed at least twenty endemic species to develop amongst its flora and fauna. This includes five endemic primates: the Mentawai or kloss gibbon (Hylobates klossii), Mentawai macaque (Macaca pagensis), Siberut macaque (Macaca siberu), Mentawai leaf monkey (Presbytis potenziani), and pig-tailed langur (Simias concolor). They are highly endangered due to logging, unsustainable hunting, and conversion of rainforest to palm oil plantations.[2] Some areas of the Mentawai Islands rain forest ecoregion are protected, such as the Siberut National Park. Red junglefowl and crab-eating macaque are also native.

Communities and Conservation in Sumatra
In Indonesia, where biodiversity and carbon rich forests outside formal protected areas are under enormous pressure for conversion to agricultural plantations or intensive forestry concessions, Fauna & Flora International (FFI) is working with local partners to facilitate a new paradigm of forest management. We are supporting forest-edge communities to secure legal rights for sustainable forest management -- taking forest lands 'off the market' for conversion and placing it in the hands of its traditional custodians.
In the forests bordering Kerinci Seblat National Park (KSNP), in Sumatra Indonesia, FFI is working Lembaga Tiga Beradik (L-TB) and local government to support fourteen forest-edge communities in two districts to secure legally recognised village forests in critical Sumatran Tiger habitat. Delivering against goals of biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation, and protection of the forest resources and ecosystem services on which the local communities depend. The following film illustrates our work with eight communities in Merangin District.

The Siberut Macaque, pets in Pokai, North Siberut
The Siberut macaque (Macaca siberu) is a newly recognized species of macaque. It lives only on Siberut island, off Sumatra, in Indonesia. A few pet macaques are detained by local people for entertainment. The forest where this monkey lives is currently at risk...
Reading the comment on my video, I'd like to add something. People are too easily shocked by animal in captivity while at the same time huge area of wildlife are being destroyed systematically, killing hundreds of creatures, silently. There, no body is saying anything because the reality is less obvious to see compare to a poor monkey in a cage. For ten baby monkeys put in a cage, a hundred will die because their forest is destroyed. Few people catch monkey for pet but many indirectly destroy their habitat by buying tropical wood. And few people feel guilty buying tropical wood...
