Most trips to China begin in Shanghai or Beijing. From the US Air China and United have directs to Beijing. The city has some fascination site such as the Forbidden City as well as Timamen Square. It is also near the Great Wall. But none of these attractions are worth seeing when smog settles into the area. When the smog is this bad the recommendation is to avoid any outdoor activity. If you do go outside it is recommended that you wear a mask to filter the acrid air.
It is about a 2 1/2 hour flight from Beijing to Chengdu and the air quality there was much better., It is the capital of the Sichuan province in Southwest China with a population in the city and surrounding area of over 14 million.
In China, the Giant Panda is a national treasure, only 1500 exist and about 80 percent of the world's Giant Pandas are in the Sichuan area. Fossils indicate that the Giant Panda inhabited the Sichuan area as long as 4,000 years ago. A breeding center was established near Changdu.. It was established for research, breeding and conservation for the Giant Pandas. Today the center has become a top tourist destination with over 100,000 visitors annually. Visitors can see pandas of all ages playing eating and sleeping at the center.
The Panda Research Center was opened in 1987, the year I was born. It was first built as a zoo for many other animals and for endangered pandas.
Pandas had a problem, no food for them. In the 1980s there was not much bamboo in the province so it was difficult for the pandas to find food. People set up a sanctuary for the pandas and solved this problem.
Also at the center are Red Pandas, which originate in the Himalayans mountains. They are pandas but also closely related to the raccoon. They are also endangered and a sanctuary has been established for them at the center.
In the center of Changdu at the Jinjiang river is the luxury Hotel Shangri-La with 593 guest rooms and suites.. The hotel is a showcase of rich artistic culture such as the three panel screens in the bar depicting the giant panda in its natural habitat.
At the Shangri-La Horizon Club besides the welcoming toy Pandas, the staff make sure that the extra comfort and attention to detail makes it a seamless arrival and departure from the hotel. At the Horizon Club lounge there is daily breakfast along with snacks and beverages throughout the day along with canapés and cocktail in the evening. . There is even a private meeting room.
The rooms and suites are spacious and have luxury embedded in ever inch of the room and bathroom. With separate showers and tubs and extra large towels, many could say it is better than home.
Facilities include an indoor swimming pool with lap lanes and a jacuzzi, massage, sauna, steam room, tennis courts and a gymnasium with all the necessary equipment.
The Shang Palace is known for serving some of the finest Cantonese and Sichuanese dishes. Within the restaurant there are 17 private rooms. The menu features a vast array of scrumptious choices including marinated bean curd with cordyceps and asparagus, crispy roast pork belly, live seafood, steam frog with ham and black mushroom, as well as Dim Sum and vegetarian selections.
The 90th China Food and Drinks Fair held at the Century City New International Convention & Exhibition Center was happening while we were there. With an estimated 150,000 exhibitors it is an overwhelming display of international spirits, wine, alcohols, food and beverages. With each exhibitor trying to out do the next with attractive displays and attractive models, performances karaoke-style, fashion shows mixing traditional with futuristic themes.
The Wangiang Park is on of the more important parks in Changdu located along the Jinjiang River. It was developed in the memory of Xue Tao who was a Tang Dynasty female poet. She loved bamboo and written many poems in this park. The park has over 100 varieties of bamboo.
Also in the park jugglers can be found playing with spinning tops dancing to music. Artists paint poems on walkways, and musicians sing they favorite songs.
In the old town of Changdu are many unique and enticing restaurants and bars. At one such restaurant we let the staff pick out a traditional Chinese meal with included fried foie gras, fungus with chili and shredded duck. We did stop before the snake dish was presented.

Pig Intestine Alley // Chengdu: City of Gastronomy 24
I can't say I was excited when I flipped over a card with a photo of pig intestines on it. Little did I know, I was about to have one of the best meals I've eaten in Chengdu. Pig Intestine Alley is the name of the restaurant, but of course their specialty is pig intestine. That being said, I couldn't resist ordering the first item on their menu, which translates to something like mixed braised meat. It's tender pork leg meat stewed for hours and then covered in a combination of chili oil, vinegar, and sugar. The spicy, sweet, salty combination is one that I've always loved - combined with moist hunks of pork - it was incredibly delicious.
Woah, hold on! Don't get your panties in a bundle! Of course I tried pig intestine at Pig Intestine Alley. I was very happy with the flavorful pieces of large intestine. The texture is the challenge here - only because it's one that you're probably not used to. If you can get past that (and I guess the fact that pig poo once roamed them hallways) you'll be pretty satisfied with this dish. It came with perfectly cooked potatoes.
I really did love this restaurant. The atmosphere was great and the food was even better. The couple that run the place were happy to serve me (and to put up with my lack of Chinese and all my camera crap). Their son, who also works there, spoke English and was happy to chat. He told me that the restaurant has been there, doing well, for the past 15 years.
HOW TO VISIT PIG INTESTINE ALLEY
The restaurant's name in Chinese is 巷子肥肠 (Xiàngzi féicháng).

If you want to try the Stewed Mixed Meat dish that I had, you can order 拌拐肉 (Bàn guǎi ròu). If you want to try intestines, there are a couple options: Mixed Intestines 拌肥肠 (Bàn féicháng), stewed intestines 卤肥肠 (Lǔ féicháng), and 烧肥肠 (Shāo féicháng) which could mean baked or barbecued or even roasted.
In this series, I am eating my way through a deck of cards. I bought a deck of food themed playing cards that feature a different Sichuan dish on every card. Every week I'll shuffle the deck and pick one random card to hunt down and sample. Chengdu was the first Asian city to be named a UNESCO City of Gastronomy. It's full of incredible food - a lot of which you probably don't know about.
