WELCOME TO TUNISIA! INSIDE STAR WARS CANYON (travel vlog 2019)
Welcome to Tozeur Tunisia! This city was made famous by films like Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and the English Patient. In this vlog, we explore the regions featured in these iconic films: Sidi Bouhlel Canyon, Oasis Chebika, and Tamaghza.
0:25 - 4:00 Chebika (الشبيكة)
We travel from Tozeur (توزر) to Chebika, a mountain oasis in western Tunisia, where we hike through the canyon to find a hot spring and waterfall in the middle of the desert.
4:04 - 5:08 Sidi Bouhlel (aka Star Wars Canyon)
Sidi Bouhlel is a canyon located near the town of Tozeur in Southern Tunisia. It is also commonly known as the “Star Wars Canyon” since it was the film location of the desert planet of Tatooine in Star Wars: A New Hope. It is where the famous pod racing scene was filmed as well as the kidnapping of R2D2 by the Jawas. Other popular films such as Indiana Jones Raiders of the Lost Ark and The English Patient were also shot in Sidi Bouhlel.
5:10 Tamaghza
Beautiful waterfall and mountain oasis.
8:25 - 9:55 Tunisian feast in the oasis
In the middle of Tamaghza, we stop to enjoy the Tunisian food grown and made here in the oasis, including Sharba Frik soup, Mechouia salad, brik (a savory pastry filled with egg).

TUNISIA - Baby kitten lost in Tozeur palm grove!
Join us on a quick visit to Star Wars Canyon (aka the mini Grand Canyon behind Sidi Bouhlel) near Deghoumes. The majority of our footage is lost on some mini-DV tape we cannot locate.
Then, enter Tozeur's nearby oasis palm grove, or palmeriaie, the second largest in all of Tunisia. Since we do not advise you spend an entire week counting them, we will now reveal that, according to reports, the palmeraie consists of 200,000 trees spread over 10 sq. km. Apparently, that also includes a few stray baby kittens as well.

Star War Tour in Tunisia with Dr Adly Hassanein Hella
#OurStarWarsTour in 4x4 vehicles turned out to be a truly amazing experience! It's difficult to describe the beauty of the Sahara in words... the vastness, the remoteness, the varying shades and colors of the sand, the blue sky, the sunrises and sunsets. And the stars at night!
Star Wars fans may be more familiar with the planet Tatooine than the country of Tunisia: but in reality they are one and the same. Tatooine was the first planet to be introduced in the original movie, Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, and of the 10 Star Wars movies made to date four were partially filmed in southern Tunisia. Many of the sets are well preserved and open to visitors, who will recognize them as various iconic Star Wars locations including the Lars Homestead, where Luke Skywalker grew up; and Mos Espa, the spaceport where Anakin Skywalker lived before being discovered by Qui-Gon Jinn.
Matmata: The Lars Homestead
The Berber town of Matmata has several underground troglodyte dwellings, one of which featured in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope as the Lars Homestead, where Luke was raised by his aunt and uncle. The same dwelling also appeared in the later film Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones. Today, the homestead has been turned into the Hotel Sidi Driss - an affordable option beloved by Star Wars fans. It has 20 basic rooms and a restaurant, where you can rub shoulders with other film fanatics and admire props taken directly from the movie sets.
Tataouine: Mos Espa Slave Quarter
The Tunisian town of Tataouine is not a Star Wars set in its own right, but it did inspire George Lucas' naming of the Skywalkers' home planet. It's also a great base for a full day of Star Wars sightseeing, since it's located within easy reach of Ksar Ouled Soltane and Ksar Hadada. A Ksar is a fortified Berber village, and both Ouled Soltane and Hadada were used to film scenes in the slave quarters of Mos Espa. Anakin Skywalker lived in these slave quarters with his mother, Shmi, in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace.
Tozeur: Mos Espa, Jedi Duel & the Star Wars Canyon
The desert town of Tozeur is another great destination with plenty of Star Wars locations nearby. Sidi Bouhlel ravine appears in several scenes from the original Star Wars movie, including the abduction of R2D2 by the Jawas; the wreck of the Sandcrawler after an Imperial attack; and the Tusken Raider attack on Luke Skywalker. The vast salt pan of Chott el Djerid was the site of scenes showing the exterior of the Lars Homestead, and also featured as the final shot of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.
Fans will also recognize the area's dramatic desert ridges (known as the Yardangs) as the backdrop of the duel between Qui-Gon Jinn and Darth Maul in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. To the west of the Yardangs lies the abandoned Mos Espa set, where the crews from Lucas film built much of the spaceport from scratch for The Phantom Menace. The desert sands have encroached upon the set, giving it an eerie atmosphere of abandonment, but landmarks like Watto's shop, Sebulba's Café and the pod-racing arena where Anakin won his freedom are still clearly visible.
Djerba Island: Mos Eisley Cantina, Obi-Wan Kenobi's House
Located just off Tunisia's southern coast, Djerba Island is home to several Star Wars locations. When you head to the coastal town of Ajim you will see the buildings used for the exterior shots of the Mos Eisley Cantina, visited by Luke Skywalker and Obi Wan-Kenobi in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. Just outside the town lies an old mosque, which served in the same film as the house where Obi Wan-Kenobi spent his exile. Other Djerba Island buildings also appeared in scenes that were later deleted from the movie, namely as Anchorhead's Tosche Station.
Troglodyte homes of Matmata’s Djebel Dahar region are Tunisia’s century’s old underground homes. People have lived for centuries in underground houses whose earthen casing provides protection against searing summer heat and winter winds. But in recent decades, rural depopulation has meant fewer people live in the homes, which are composed of rooms hewed into the walls of an excavated circular courtyard.

Star Wars desert set misses out on new movie hype
(16 Dec 2015) LEAD-IN:
As the world gears up for the release of the latest Star Wars film, the setting for the first film - Tunisia's desert - is being forgotten.
The film set has been restored in recent years, but the country's flagging tourism industry means the iconic landmarks are standing empty.
STORY-LINE:
A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...
Unused for more than 18 years, these dwellings are what's left of the planet Tatooine and the beginning of the Star Wars journey.
In 1976, producers first called on Tunisia's Sahara to create Tatooine - home of Luke Skywalker - for the first Star Wars film: Episode IV A New Hope.
And more than 20 years later, Ong Jmel became Mos Espa Spaceport in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace in 1997.
Now, fans have been whipped up into a frenzy as the world wide release of the seventh film in the franchise 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' beckons.
But the Tunisian sets, so integral in earlier films, now stand empty.
After shooting was completed 18 years ago, the sets were largely forgotten until they were almost entirely covered with sand.
A fundraising campaign managed to raise enough money to free and restore the set in 2012-14.
But far from tourists flocking to the site, political turmoil and this year's terror attacks in the country mean the set is once again deserted as tourists stay away.
Salem Ben Said is a shepherd who has been working on the site for the past five years.
He offers tea and food to tourists when they do visit.
He tries to live with whatever money he can make on this famous site, though he's never seen the film and doesn't quite realise its place in popular culture.
For him it's making a living that's important.
They did a movie here, and it talks about a war of the stars, the first people in time, with camels, horses and how people used to live in the beginning of time. Fortunately, things went well but now there are less tourists, and so there is less business.
Not far away lies the so-called Star Wars canyon in Sidi Bouhlel.
The site has racked up a number of iconic film credits including Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark and The English Patient.
Journalist Wahid Abbes complains that not enough has been made of the area's rich cultural history.
It's not only in Tozeur but in all Tunisia, there is an entire cultural side that is never focused on. For example, if you visit the very famous site of Mos Espa Star Wars, you find people who do not speak any other language than Arabic and they don't know the film or the history of the place.
He says he worked on the Star Wars set in the 1990s, such is his love for the films.
So much so that when Abbes heard the new movie was being shot in Abu Dhabi, he took it as a betrayal.
The bright lights of the town of Tozeur, in the west of the country, have faded in recent years.
The international airport used to have 14 weekly international flights. Now it serves the domestic market only.
Flights from Europe come a couple of times a year during specific events.
As European and western tourists stay away, locals now depend on the Arab market.
The difference with before is that there used to be many tourists, business was going really well, says shop owner Anis El-Najjar.
Today, we work with Arabs, some Algerians (tourists) a few French as well, but nothing like before.
Fourteen out of 17 hotels have closed in recent years.
The Ras El Ain hotel is one of those which remains open, but has lost 70 percent of its business since 2011.
December - usually peak season - sees just 20 rooms hired out.
The hotel's capacity is 280.
But the hotel's General Director Jamel Ben Daly remains optimistic.
He hopes a new tourism policy in the country could re-boot the flagging sector.
