Cambodian countryside food meets haute cuisine at Pou, Siem Reap
In a refurbished Khmer wooden house tucked away behind a pagoda, across the river from the hustle and bustle of Siem Reap’s old market and Pub Street, 28-year-old chef Mork Mengly is reinventing Cambodian cuisine - though he's too humble to admit it.
“The food here is not very original . . . but I mixed it up,” he said last week in the upstairs kitchen of Pou Restaurant and Bar.
What he means is that the recipes aren’t created purely from his imagination but are rooted in countryside cooking. The core concept behind his menu, which features just a handful of starters, mains and desserts, is to take the type of food eaten in rural homes, on the street and in the “jungle”, and to shake up and reinterpret those recipes. The result is achieved with style and at reasonable prices.
Siem Reap Part II - Cooking Class, Angkor Wat & Happy Pizza
We met up with two of our good friends, Cam and Stacey and explored some more of Siem Reap with them!
We all attended a cooking class with Siem Reap Countryside Cooking Class with Mr Ben who is doing amazing work for his community. This started off with a tour through the market where we ate some delicious bugs haha and then to the venue for the cooking class itself which is located at an orphanage that caters to 71 children. The place where we cooked the food houses 40 boys at night with the girls in another building on the property.
The next morning we went to famous Angkor Wat for the sunrise before heading to Angkor Thom to see more beautiful ruins. Then we went to a local restaurant to try the world famous Happy Pizza.

Siem Reap Floating Village - Should You Visit? ????????
This video is about the insane adventure we had experienced while exploring the Khmer life in the Cambodian countryside and floating village around Siem Reap. We roamed around the rural communities in Cambodia which are settled on the shores of Tonle Sap Lake.
Kampong Phluk is a commune and village in Siem Reap Province in northern-central Cambodia. It is a village built on stilts on the Tonle Sap. The community largely depends on fishing for survival
Siem Reap, a resort town in northwestern Cambodia, is the gateway to the ruins of Angkor, the seat of the Khmer kingdom from the 9th–15th centuries. Angkor’s vast complex of intricate stone buildings includes preserved Angkor Wat, the main temple, which is pictured on Cambodia’s flag. Giant, mysterious faces are carved into the Bayon Temple at Angkor Thom.

Cambodia: Siem Reap (places we go)
Siem Reap was always destined for great things, but few people saw them coming this thick and this fast. It has reinvented itself as the epicentre of the new Cambodia, with more guesthouses and hotels than temples, world-class wining and dining and sumptuous spas.
At its heart, Siem Reap is still a little charmer, with old French shop-houses, shady tree-lined boulevards and a slow-flowing river. But it is expanding at breakneck speed with new houses and apartments, hotels and resorts sprouting like mushrooms in the surrounding countryside. The tourist tide has arrived and locals are riding the wave. Not only is this great news for the long-suffering Khmers, but it has transformed the town into a pulsating place for visitors. Forget the naysayers who mutter into their beers about Siem Reap in the 'old days', now is the time to be here, although you may curse your luck when stuck behind a jam of tour buses on the way back from the temples.
Angkor Wat is a place to be savoured, not rushed, and this is the base to plan your adventures. Still think three days at the temples is enough? Think again with Siem Reap on the doorstep. (text from lonelyplanet). Have to admit you have to love it!

Khmer Set 8 Course Dinner including Amok at Angkor Palms Restaurant in Siem Reap, Cambodia
For dinner we headed off to visit Angkor Palms restaurant located in the heart of Siem Reap - just off of Pub street - to try their highly recommended platter 8 course meal set that included Amok, Mango Salad, Fried Spinach, Fresh Spring Rolls, Green Coconut Chicken Curry, Spareribs Pork, Rice and Banana Tapioca pudding for dessert along with a coconut and mango smoothie. It was a glorious feast that satisfied our taste buds and then some. Coming in at $14 for the meal and $3 for the drinks it was a pricier meal (by Cambodian standards) but having the opportunity to have an authentic Cambodian dinner with multiple courses made it well worth it in our opinion. For those looking to visit the restaurant check out the following information below:

Today we are having a feast of a dinner. We are at a Cambodian restaurant and we have just ordered ourselves an eight course meal.
This restaurant is called Angkor Palms and it is highly recommended, so we have high expectations for this meal.
Right now I am trying the fresh spring rolls and I think they have rice noodles inside, so let's see. Woah, that is a mega bite!
That was a really good spring roll. It had some very fresh and zesty flavors and a little bit of seafood as well; so far so good.
Next up, we have the spare ribs and these do look good. It just melts in your mouth.
Next up we are trying the Amok, which is one of the most popular dishes in Cambodia. Amok is fish that has been coated in a coconut cream and then baked in a banana leaf. Did it hit the spot? Um-hmmmm. And she takes a second bite before I get any.
This is the one thing that I'm probably the most excited about - the homemade green curry with chicken. I've got a slice chicken. Wow, I can really taste the curry. Once again, just like the spare ribs, it just melts in your mouth and I barely even have to chew. Is it coconut based? I don't think it is that strongly based, no.
Up next is our shaved mango salad, which has some peanuts and mint leaves on top. Sweet? It is sweet? It is also nice and crunchy because of the peanuts. It has some nice spices and is really flavorful. You just took a second bite. And last but certainly not least is the fried water spinach. That is tasty. It has kind of a butter-y garlic flavor.
Time for dessert. Tell us what you are having? To finish off we've got a sweet little treat - a tapioca based pudding with banana. Oh, take a big bite. Oh yeah, it is so sweet and so good.
We have finished our feast of a dinner. I must admit, when I first saw the platter being brought over I thought 'hmmm, is this for two people? I think I could probably eat my own but in the end we still have food leftover. That was just so much to eat. It was so tasty but it was really filling at the same time. So, it was good stuff - it was a good dinner.
The 8 course platter is $14 for two people. For those who want to come here this restaurant is located right in the heart of Siem Reap nearby the Central Market. You can't miss it.

Traditional Cooking - Countryside Cambodia
Filmed by WestIslandKev: March 16, 2010 - Cambodia.
We all have our fancy kitchen toys and everything at our fingertips but this visit to the Cambodian countryside reminded me of how things used to be for us and still are for millions of people on this earth. Simple rustic time honoured methods of preparing food, fresh caught fish and homegrown vegetables and spices, as Gordon Ramsey often says to keep it simple, good, honest, fresh and uncomplicated.
I am very fortunate to have good friends in Cambodia and they are kind people that invite you into their homes to visit and share a meal. This visit to the countryside was a fantastic experience and I will always treasure it and look forward to the next time. Oh, and the food was heavenly.

Amok Curry Khmer lunch at our favorite Cambodian restaurant in Siem Reap, Cambodia
In our latest travel video we eat lunch at our favorite Cambodian restaurant (Home Cocktail) where we devour a set lunch consisting of spring rolls (fresh and fried), amok coconut curry, vegetable curry, rice and fried banana in a rum/coconut cream sauce. We've been eating at this restaurant almost once a day since we arrived over a week and a half ago. We can't get enough of their set meals given how much tickle our taste buds without putting much of a dent in our wallets. The set meal we had today cost only $9 ($5 for the amok curry set and $4 for the chicken curry set). Although we'll be sad to leave we're also really excited about heading to Battambang next.

2 Thnou St., near Fair Trade bag shop, opp. end of street to Le Malreaux | Siem Reap city centre, Siem Reap Siem Reap, Cambodia
Today we are having lunch at our favorite restaurant in Siem Reap, it is called home cocktails, but the name doesn't really describe the atmosphere of this place too well. It is actually a very relaxed and chilled our restaurant with nice wicker chairs that you can just slink back into. They play Jack Johnson and Johnny Cash and they have really good food.
We just arrived at the restaurant here and I was certain I brought my glasses and set them down on the table and suddenly they were gone. I spent the last two minutes frantically looking around the area wondering where are my glasses because they are prescription sunglasses. These aren't cheap one dollar ones you pickup. These are maybe close to $100 glasses. I was frantically looking around for these glasses and it turned out our server accidentally put them on his tray. For the last five minutes I was stressed out. They are back in my hands now.
Thank you. Here is a little dish that Sam eats every single day. Deep-fried spring rolls, it does not get better than that. The first of our three courses have arrived - these are the appetizers. I'm starting off with deep-fried spring rolls, which you can see down here and what do you got?
I went with a healthier alternative - mine are fresh spring rolls. This is going to be messy. How are they? Really good. What kind of ingredients can you taste? We have tomatoes, lettuce, onions, carrots but it also has mint leaves, so it is very refreshing.
Savor that spring roll - savor it good. My favorite curry has arrived and here we go for the reveal. It comes in a coconut. Look at that. This is Amok but in curry form. Amok is generally a fish that has been wrapped in a banana leaf. In this case, we have a nice coconut based curry with lots of veggies and fish.
How is the Amok? It is so good. I eat this almost every single day. Honestly, I can eat it without rice. It is almost like a nice thick creamy soup, so I'm happy just eating it by the spoonful.
Our second curry is a chicken vegetable coconut based curry. It is somewhat similar to the amok. It is not quite as creamy. It is actually a bit spicier. It is also delicious as well. We've had this one several times.
Okay, first bite. It is a really rich curry that is coconut based and a little bit sweet and savory. It is delicious.
Ok, so this is your favorite dessert. What are you having today? These are bananas coated in a rum and coconut based sauce with palm sugar. It is so sweet and so delicious. Our entire meal cost nine dollars. It was five dollars for the Amok set and four dollars for the curry set, so it was a real cheap affordable. Nine dollars in total and it was delicious. We highly recommend coming. We're going to miss this place aren't we? Big time.
