Uganda: Planning a Trip to National Parks | #WhereisAJ?
AJAY JAIN
Sub-Saharan Africa is teeming with wildlife across many countries like Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Namibia to name a few. But Uganda is where you may want to be in despite it not featuring on too many itineraries.
The Uganda Wildlife Authority ( is doing a good job managing over 10 national parks and I was fortunate to visit three of their finest recently. Join me in my game drives and plan your own itinerary accordingly.
PARKS VISITED
* Murchison Falls National Park
* Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
* Queen Elizabeth National Park (drove through Ishasha wildlife sector to get here and got a good sense of this park too)
PLANNING AN ITINERARY IN UGANDA’S NATIONAL PARKS
No amount of time is enough is you really love being in the wild and close to its flora and fauna. But we all need to draw a line somewhere - do provision for at least 2-3 full days in each park. When you visit Bwindi, you can be there for just two nights - you arrive on day one, go gorilla tracking the following morning, and return the following day.
MAIN ATTRACTIONS OF EACH NATIONAL PARK
* Murchison Falls National Park: It gets its name from falls by the same name on the Nile river. Don’t miss out on a river cruise where you can get close to the falls and feels sprays all over you (and your cameras!!). The river itself is home to countless hippos and crocodiles while the park boasts an impressive line-up to include lions, leopards, elephants, hyenas, giraffes, water buffaloes and many species of birds, reptiles and other mammals. The landscape draws you in - from the crack of dawn till night falls. Magical is the word for Murchison.
* Bwindi Impenetrable National Park: You go to Bwindi for the endangered Mountain Gorillas. They sure make you work hard for the sightings. Expect to be out all day tracking them through thick forests and slushy paths; the hilly terrain tests you, and be prepared to fall, slip and slide on your backside. A good scrub is what you will need at the end - but the sightings of gorillas will leave you glowing.
* Queen Elizabeth National Park: Another park that will leave you stunned with its virgin beauty. Elephants are to be found in abundance here - as are many other species of birds and animals. Take sunset cruises in the Kazinga channel and go up close to hippos, water buffaloes, crocs and thousands of birds hovering around you. Vast plains with pockets of thick forests make game drives a pleasure and an adventure - you never know what lurks around the corner.
SELECTING THE RIGHT GAME DRIVE VEHICLE AND GUIDE
Your experience in the jungle is largely shaped by your guides and the vehicles they use. You can choose from the comfortable closed vehicles with an opening in the roof or from those open on all sides; I prefer the latter as I can shoot from all angles and also remove the soft covers should I need angles from higher up. I always interview guides before selecting one - not only is their knowledge important, but they should have a good sense and intuition in tracking animals. Of course, no one can guarantee any sightings.
DO YOU BOOK A GAME DRIVE VEHICLE ALL FOR YOURSELF OR SHARE?
It all depends on your budget. A shared vehicle in obviously cheaper but it gives you lesser flexibility in choosing shooting positions as well as asking the guides to take you to your areas of interest. Personally, I save elsewhere but prefer to have a vehicle and guide to myself. I cherish the relative privacy too - it resonates well with the silence of the forest.
HOW DO YOU TRAVEL BETWEEN NATIONAL PARKS IN UGANDA?
Most parks in Uganda are within a few hours driving distance of each other. Of course, it can take longer if you were to go directly from, say, Murchison to Bwindi. The road network in quite extensive in Uganda, and they are mostly of good quality with low traffic density. You can also book rides on small planes that land on strips inside reserves but these are more expensive than equivalent flights in countries like Kenya; lower numbers in Uganda lead to higher operating costs here.

Murchison Falls National Park Safari - Uganda, Africa 2017
In August, 2017, our charitable organization visited Murchison Falls National Park. Here, our team experienced an incredible sunset and sunrise safari as well as a boat tour of the Nile. I am in awe of the incredible creatures we share this planet with. It is my hope the all humans do their part to preserve, protect, and respect animals so they can be appreciated by many generations that follow us. Please share this video with students, friends, family, or anyone who loves wildlife as much as I do. For more photography from this photographer please visit or follow on Instagram: kylacareswp

Overview
Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is a collaborative effort between the Uganda Wildlife Authority, the Rhino Fund Uganda, a Ugandan NGO committed to the restoration of Uganda's rhinoceros population and Ziwa Ranchers Limited, a private land management company. The sanctuary offers a secure place where rhino populations can be expanded by breeding, protected from human and non-human predators and gradually re-introduced into Uganda's national parks, while at the same time, allowing the public to enjoy these majestic animals, as the project moves forward.
A team of approximately 78 park rangers and security guards keep a 24-hour watch on the rhinos to ensure their safety. The 70 square kilometres (7,000 ha) sanctuary is surrounded by a 2 metres (6.6 ft) electric fence to keep the rhinos in and the intruders out. The sanctuary is home to at least 40 mammal and red largest city. This location is near Nakitoma Village, Nakasongola District, in the Kafu River Basin, off the Kampala–Gulu Highway.
ptilian species including monkeys, antelopes, hippopotamuses, crocodiles and numerous bird species Tourist facilities at the sanctuary include a safari lodge, guest house, budget accommodation, and camp grounds. The accommodations are two separate businesses and both have restaurants that offer meals to tourists. In addition to on foot rhino trekking, tourist activities include birding, canoe rides and nature walks.[3]
History
Both the Black Rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis michaeli) and the Northern white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum cottoni), are indigenous to Uganda. However, due to a number of factors, including prolonged armed human conflict, poaching and the mismanagement of their natural habitat, by 1982, both species had been wiped out in the country. Ziwa Rhino sanctuary was established in 2005 to reintroduce the southern white rhinoceros to Uganda. The long-term goal of the sanctuary is to build a sustainable rhinoceros population and relocate rhinos back to their original habitat in Uganda's protected areas. As of January 2010, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is the only location in Uganda, where rhinos can be observed in their natural habitat.[4]
Starting with a total of six animals,[5] four that were bought from Solio Ranch in Kenya and two donated from Disney's Animal Kingdom in Orlando, Florida, in the United States, the rhino population had grown to thirteen as of June 2013. Following the birth of another calf in April 2014, the total rhino population at Ziwa Ranch rose to 15.[6] As of March 2018, the rhino numbers at the sanctuary had increased to twenty-two animals.[7]

Tourism minister Prof Ephraim Kamuntu says they will soon hire three public relations firms from the Gulf, China and India in a bid to increase the number of tourists flowing into the country. 'My name is Becky and I’m a single mother of a son called Louis.
I longed to be a truck driver since I was a young girl.
This was because my dad was a truck driver.'
John Kinyua – Operations Manager East Africa: 'Becky is the first female truck driver in East Africa.'
Becky: 'I love my job – I drive my travellers or guests to national parks to see wildlife “Ok My Guests! In front of us we have white rhinos”
At first, men used to give me a hard time, I used to be very bullied. Every place that we go to, they will react'.
George Njau – Workshop Manager: 'First time I came here, I was so shocked to see a lady driving a truck. A lot of companies call me, they say: George – there’s a lady driving your vehicle. I said: Yeah. “how?” What do you mean how?. You saw her driving it. “Does she fix it?” I said yeah, she services the truck on the side of the road. She changes tyres. People think she’s supposed to be back in the village or in the house, cooking for her husband or cooking for her kids.'
Becky: 'They would even come and block me in the front. Like in Tanzania, they scream. Those ones would tell me: “Becky! You’re not supposed to be driving a truck, you’re a woman. Why should you! Can’t you go home and do something better? Maybe take care of your family. Anything to make me feel like I’m not supposed to do this.
There were some men who were like “I don’t think she should be in the truck that I’m in” That day, I think I cried half of the day, and I never had cried before. George is one of the person I will never forget. Because if it was not for his encouragement, then, I was to quit.'
George: 'Becky I been like “don’t lose hope. You’ll find challenges. People talk bad about you, but keep strong, and you’ll make it.”
Becky: 'Nakoudini Amini – Nakoudini Amini is believe in yourself.'
Workshop team: 'I was very new. So she helped me with some tips for the road. And I wished for her to carry me. Take me for a ride. And… it was awesome.'
'I think she drives it like she was born with it. She knows the truck inside out. She does what I can do. She’s one of us. She’s not different from anyone.'
Becky: 'I have been driving trucks for Intrepid for the last six years.'
George: 'Becky is very famous. The police know her, even the border. They see her, and they are like “Bring it”. She comes here in the office and everybody is chatting up with her. She has to run away: “I have work to do”. She’s part of our family, and we’re really proud of her.
My daughter, she loves Becky so much because she is driving trucks. She call her Aunty Becky. “One day I’d like to drive like Aunty Becky”. I say: “even you can drive if you want to, just have the courage, determination, and you’ll make it through”. People think she has triumphed. She has done what a lot of females do not accomplish.'
Becky: 'I just told her once: “Mum, do you know that I’m a truck driver?” “Oh my goodness!” she looks up and says: “I wish your dad can see you”.'
George: 'She has made a lot of companies think about employing female drivers now. So we’re looking forward to having a second lady driver, just all because of Becky. She encourages a lot of women now. A lot of women are looking to do driving.'
Becky: 'You say: “I’m a go-getter”. You’ll get it, you’ll get whatever you want.'
George: 'I’m proud to say that, we have the first female driver in East Africa, and that is Becky.'

Intrepid Travel has come a long way since its humble beginnings in 1989. A company that began with two bearded backpackers, a typewriter and a kitchen table now leads 100,000 travellers across the globe each year.
And although we’re a bit larger these days – with 1,000 local staff based around the world and over 800 different trips across every continent (not to mention multiple kitchen tables) – our mission remains the same. We still get a kick out of responsible travel, small groups and very (very) big adventures.
