SIGNAL HILL NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE - CANADA SERIES - THINGS TO DO IN NEWFOUNDLAND (EP 190)
Last summer was one of the best summers in St. John's Newfoundland. I was very fortunate to find some really lovely friends who took me around and helped me explore the place. This quaint little city always has something to offer. Signal Hill is very sought to place for many locals and tourists because of its location and history. The wild blueberries picking is cherry on the icing for those who like a chic experience in this rugged rocky city.

A Signal Hill Hike, St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador (by Peter Bull, Newfoundland)
There is no shortage of hikes to take in St. John's. One of my favorites is around Signal Hill - the North Head Trail. Before starting our hike we went to the Park's intrepretive center. There we learned about the many battles between the French and English that have taken place on its rocky slopes. Discovering this history before the hike brought the hill to life for Ronan and Cormac. There is also history related to the Second World War and the defense from U-boats. Great stuff for little boy's (and my) imagination while hiking. This moderate-difficult 1.7 kilometer hike takes about 90 minutes and gives views of other places to explore like Cape Spear and Fort Amherst. These places are on our list to visit on our next trip to St. John's.
Signal Hill, St. John's
Recorded, December 22, 2016
Signal Hill is a hill which overlooks the city of St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Due to its strategic placement overlooking the harbour, fortifications were built on the hill beginning in the mid 17th century. Wikipedia

Signal Hill - St. John's Newfoundland
Signal Hill was designated as the citadel for St. John's during its first construction period in the late 18th century.
During the 19th century, Signal Hill was manned specifically during the Napoleonic Wars and the American Civil War. A second construction period in Signal Hill's history saw the construction of the Queen's Battery Barracks, which has been completely restored to the period of 1862.
Construction on Cabot Tower began in 1897 to commemorate both Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897 and the 400th anniversary of John Cabot's landfall which took place in 1497. The building was declared officially open in 1900. The practical uses of the building were flag mast signalling, and a Marconi wireless station which has since been moved to St. John's International Airport.
On 12 December 1901, the first transatlantic wireless transmission was received here by Guglielmo Marconi in an abandoned fever and diphtheria hospital, which has since been destroyed by fire.[1] The transmission, in Morse code, originated from his Poldhu Wireless Station, Cornwall, UK.
Signal Hill fence removed amid backlash in St. John's
Park Canada has torn down the short-lived wooden barrier, which obstructed one of the most stunning views of St. John's and sparked widespread community outrage.

Unicyclist on Signal Hill, St John's, Newfoundland
This unicyclist made a couple of runs down a hill that has about a 45 degree slope. It was close to freezing temps and the wind was strong. Icebergs are out in the Atlantic ocean less than a mile from this little hill. Signal Hill Newfoundland is where Marconi received the first transatlantic radio signal in 1901. And not far from this location the Titanic sent an SOS to a Cape Race wireless station in Newfoundland.

Cabot Tower, Signal Hill, St. John's, Newfoundland
The final battle of the Seven Years' War in North America was fought in 1762 at the Battle of Signal Hill, in which the French surrendered St. John's to a British force under the command of Lt. Colonel William Amherst. Lt. Colonel Amherst renamed what was then known as The Lookout as Signal Hill, because of the signalling that took place upon its summit from its flagmast. Flag communication between land and sea would take place there from the 17th century until 1960. Signal Hill was designated as the citadel for St. John's during its first construction period in the late 18th century. 3 centuries after, on June 30th 2019 this timelapse was made for you to enjoy.
