Wonderful Maumere
Great Collaboration for Maumere #wonderfulindonesia Video by Giri Prasetyo @giriprasetyo, Barry Kusuma @barrykusuma, Michael Sjukrie @mikesjukrie and Budi Supriyanto @budyoke. Enjoy....
Maumere is the biggest city in Flores, larger than Labuan Bajo at the west end of the island. The town used to serve as an alternative for tourists to go to the Komodo National Park aside from Labuan Bajo. While, those wishing to attend Easter celebrations in Larantuka, also start off from Maumere, which is more easily connected by air to other parts of Indonesia.
Located at the narrowest part of the island, from Maumere due south to near the town Nita at Koting village, one can see as far as the Flores Sea to the north and the Savu Sea to the Indian Ocean to its southern horizon.
Today, Maumere is also the stepping off point to see the Three-Coloured Lakes on Mt. Kelimutu on the way to Ende. The village of Sikka, some 30 km from Maumere is the center of weaving in this area. Here visitors can watch, on request, the complete intricate process of ikat-weaving, including dying the threats with natural colors. Another village known for its weaving is Watublapi, which distinguishes itself through the use of symbolic motifs such as lizards, horses, birds and geometrical patterns.

Watublapi Weaving Village
Noel hamming it up with the Watublapi Village dancers, we had such good fun here!
The village put on a terrific show and demonstrated the step-by-step the process of fine traditional ikat weaving.
The demonstrations are held in the shade of large trees in a natural setting (bring personal insect repellent for mozzies).
Watublapi village is one of the few who still use traditional handspun yarn made out of local cotton, as well
make their own natural dyes. I have a beautiful piece of ikat from here, made by one of the men, I love it!
Well worth visiting this village on the way to or from Maurmere.

Embassy of Indonesia in Lisbon presentes ALFONSA HORENG creations.
Alfonsa Horeng is a Indonesian weaver and designer, from the Flores Island, who’s been travelling around the world showing her work and techniques. She creates weaving pieces with major aesthetic and visual impact, both due to the beauty of the decorative ethnic inspired patterns, and to the quality of the raw material – pure silk – which, right from scratch, guarantees the success of the presentation.
On top of her work as weaver, she’s been promoting various self-sustainable and ecological development projects in her home island. In 2003, she founded Lepo Lorun (House of Weaving), a weaver’s coop in Indonesia, which started with a group of 800 women from seventeen villages, with the aim to give new life to the traditional art and craft of making ikat tenun, a traditional weaving technique which uses pre-died yarn to create new patterns. «I wanted to develop what we already have, without taking traditional values out of the way».
Welcome to Maumere
Long long day, welcoming to Flores. Late night.
TENUN IKAT SIKKA AUCTION & MARKETPLACE 2019
Tenun Ikat Sikka is part of the Sikka traditional culture. The fabric has to be present at cultural occasions, such as births, weddings, and death ceremonies. People, especially in villages also wear the fabric as everyday clothes. Just recently, the Sikka Ikat is becoming popular and fancied by consumers outside of Flores and East Nusa Tenggara because of its motifs and quality. More than 90% of the Sikka Ikat producers or weavers are women in their 50’s to 70’s years of age. The weavers have the ability to design the motif by heart before weaving. They are just not a producer, but an artisan. The question of inheriting the tradition and sustaining the knowledge and skills of producing a hand-made Ikat towards the young generation remains at large.
To protect their intellectual property, the Sikka Ikat has been registered with the Directorate General of Intellectual Property, Ministry of Law and Human Rights of the Republic of Indonesia, and obtained a Geographical Indication (GI) Certificate No. ID G 000000056 on March 8, 2017. The owner of this GI certificate is the so-called Association of Tenun Ikat Sikka Community comprising of Ikat producers (weavers, dyers, spinners, and supporters in making fabrics) and business actors engaged in the Sikka Ikat value chain. This organization is named Masyarakat Perlindungan Indikasi Geografis (MPIG) Tenun Ikat Sikka, and it has a legal entity in the form of association (perkumpulan). The GI intellectual property protection covers the following elements: 1) motifs or patterns of Sikka Ikat; 2) forms of product (cloth, sarong, shawl, head cover, and fashion product); 3) production process & equipment used to produce Sikka Ikat fabric; 4) materials, which include: a) all-natural (hand-spun natural cotton yarn and natural dye), b) natural dye only (with factory-spun pure cotton yarn), c) synthetic (synthetic dye and factory-spun pure cotton yarn or synthetic yarn).
The MPIG association gathers the Ikat producers and market players to develop their collective competitiveness, promote and market the products, and provide legal protection of the Sikka Ikat. The association has a vision to make the Sikka Ikat community more prosperous through sustainable production and sale of Ikat. The role of MPIG is to provide services to its members, such as: traceability and quality control system of Ikat, promotion and marketing, education & training (especially for young people to ensure regeneration), partnership and collaboration with stakeholders, and membership management. The goal is to make the Sikka Ikat as a source of sustainable livelihood for the Sikka Ikat community contributing to the local development and preservation of the indigenous heritage.
To enable to carry out its vision and mission, the MPIG association intends to generate sufficient initial funds as capital to start its programs and activities. Then, it came the idea of organizing an activity in the form of auction, exhibition and sale of Ikat GI products in Jakarta with the aim of raising funds and simultaneously introducing Ikat fabrics and creative fashion products made from Ikat to the wider community. By the end of the activity, it is expected that MPIG is able to generate sufficient fund as a start-up capital.
Many thanks to our sponsors & donors who have made this event successful: Astra, BRI, Telkomsel, Phapros, Perta Daya Gas, Pupuk Kaltim, Tripatra, Sinarmas, Pertamina Lubricants, Indonesian-Swiss Intellectual Property Project, Ford Foundation, Hotel Atlet Century Park.
