The Silent Valley National Park with an area of 237. 52 sq km is located in the Northeastern corner of Palakkad district. It rises abruptly to the Nilgiri Plateau in the North and overlooks the plains of Mannarkkad in the South. Extremely fragile, a unique preserve of tropical evergreen rain forests which is a veritable nursery of flora and fauna, some of which are found nowhere else in the world. The core of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve is the Silent Valley National Park. Despite its name, the Silent Valley (the clamour of Cicadas is conspicuously absent here) is a rich storehouse of biodiversity. It is a true Garden of Eden for students of life sciences, professional scientists and field biologists. Perhaps, nowhere else can one find such a representative collection of Western Ghats biodiversity - more than 1000 species of flowering plants which include about 110 species of orchids, more than 34 species of mammals, about 200 species of butterflies, 400 species of moths, 128 species of beetles of which 10 are new to science, about 150 species of birds including almost all the 16 endemic birds of southern India. The River Kunthi descends from the Nilgiri hills, from an altitude of 2000 m above sea level, and traverses the entire length of the valley and rushes down to the plains through the deep gorge. The River Kunthi never turns brown and is always crystal clear, perennial and wild. The evapo-transpiration from these forests is much higher than from any other surface. This cools the atmosphere, helps easy condensation of water vapour, causing summer rains in the plains.

Ceylon Frog Moth, Great Indian Hornbill, the Nilgiri Laughing Thrush can be also found here. The river Kunthi that passes through, never turns brown and is always crystal clear.

Silent Valley National Park, Kerala- A jewel of Kerala not so silent anymore!

Silent Valley region is locally known as Sairandhrivanam, which in Malayalam means Sairandhri's Forest. Sairandhri is the name assumed by Draupadi, while the Pandavas were in exile. They are believed to have stayed in a cave near Kunti River. English botanist Robert Wight is credited with including the silent valley area in the Kerala map. The British named the area Silent Valley because of a perceived absence of noisy cicadas.
A checkered history
In 1914 the forest of the Silent Valley area was declared a reserve forest, however, from 1927 to 1976 portions of the Silent Valley forest area were subjected to forestry operations. In 1928 the location on the Kunthipuzha River at Sairandhri was identified as an ideal site for electricity generation and in 1958 a study and survey of the area was conducted and a hydroelectric project of 120 MV costing Rs. 17 crore was proposed by the Kerala State Electricity Board. The resulting reservoir would flood 8.3 km2 of virgin rainforest and threaten the lion-tailed macaque.

In 1973 the valley became the focus of Save Silent Valley, India's fiercest environmental movement of the decade.

In 1981 Prof.C.V.Subramanian, the internationally acclaimed Mycologist, wrote to Mrs Indira Gandhi, seeking her intervention to stop the Dam construction which held very unique Flora and fauna. Prof Subramanian also submitted a report on the Silent Valley on the basis of which Mrs Gandhi, decided to abandon the project.

The Silent Valley forests were declared as a National Park. On 1 September 1986 Silent Valley National Park was designated as the core area of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. Since then, a long-term conservation effort has been undertaken to preserve the Silent Valley ecosystem. In 2009, the total park area was increased to 236.74 km2. It is now the largest national park in Kerala.

The perennial Kunthipuzha River drains the entire 15 km length of the park from north to south into the Bharathapuzha River.
The Mudugar and Irula tribal people are indigenous to the area and do live in the adjacent valley of Attappady Reserved Forest. Also, the Kurumbar people live in the highest range outside the park bordering on the Nilgiris.
Many of the Mudugar, Irula and Kurumbar now find work related to conservation and tourism. Some work for the Forest Department in the park as forest guards and visitor guides. The valley areas of the park are in a Tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests Ecoregion. Hilly areas above 1,000 m are in the South Western Ghats montane rain forests region. Above 1,500 m, the evergreen forests begin to give way to stunted forests, called sholas, interspersed with open grassland, both of which are of interest to ecologists as the rich biodiversity here has never been disturbed by human settlements. Several threatened species are endemic here. New plant and animal species are often discovered here.
Birdlife International lists 16 bird species in Silent Valley as threatened or restricted:- Nilgiri wood-pigeon, Malabar parakeet, Malabar grey hornbill, white-bellied treepie, grey-headed bulbul, broad-tailed grassbird, rufous babbler, Wynaad laughing thrush, Nilgiri laughing thrush, Nilgiri blue robin, black-and-rufous flycatcher, Nilgiri flycatcher, white-bellied blue-flycatcher, crimson-backed sunbird and Nilgiri pipit.

There are at least 34 species of mammals at Silent Valley including the threatened lion-tailed macaque, Niligiri langur, Malabar giant squirrel, Nilgiri tahr, Peshwa's bat (Myotis peshwa) and hairy-winged bat. There are nine species of bats, rats and mice. The Silent Valley forest remains one of the most undisturbed viable habitats left for the endemic and endangered primates lion-tailed macaque and Nilgiri langur. Tiger, leopard, leopard cat, jungle cat, common palm civet, small Indian civet, brown palm civet, ruddy mongoose, stripe-necked mongoose, dhole, clawless otter, sloth bear, small Travancore flying squirrel, Indian pangolin (scaly anteater), porcupine, wild boar, sambar, spotted deer, barking deer, mouse deer, elephant and gaur also live here.

SILENT VALLEY NATIONAL PARK

In the north-eastern corner of Palakkad lies the famed Silent Valley. The Silent Valley is spread over 237 square kilometres and happens to be among the oldest stretches of rainforests in the world. It is possibly the only region in the country with a relatively undisturbed evolutionary history of at least 50 million years.

The Mahabharata tells the story of the Pandavas losing a game of dice, and being sent into exile for 13 years. Legend has it that the Pandavas had spent the better part of these years in the Silent Valley.

In 1984, the Silent Valley was declared a national park.

Mannarkkad is the nearest town from the Silent Valley. About 22 kilometres from Mannarkkad is Mukkali — the starting point for a trip to the Silent Valley. Buses ply every hour between Mannarkkad and Mukkali. The Silent Valley is divided into four parts of which only Sairandhri is open to visitors. From Mukkali, you need to hire a jeep to get to Sairandhri. The breathtaking journey from Mukkali to Sairandhri takes about an hour. Entry to the Silent Valley National Park is permitted from 8.00 am to 2.00 pm only. Visitors need to leave by 5.00 pm.

The denizens of the Silent Valley National Park include the lion-tailed macaque (one of the most endangered primates of the country), the Nilgiri Tahr, barking deer, elephant, tiger and over a 100 species of birds.

The 100 feet watch tower at Sairandhri gives the visitor a bird's eye view of the Silent Valley.

Setting foot in the Silent Valley can be a stepping stone to a higher plane of understanding. The forest department of Kerala regularly conducts nature camps inside the Silent Valley National Park for school children.

Plans for a hydroelectric project that threatened the park's rich wildlife stimulated an environmentalist social movement in the 1970s, known as the Save Silent Valley movement, which resulted in cancellation of the project and creation of the park in 1980. The visitors' centre for the park is at Sairandhri.
