Silk worm farming in India: how your silk is made

Ever since human being invented clothes, a variety of fibres have been discovered or invented to suit changes in time climate and fashion. Silk is one out of many fabrics that have been invoked over millennia despite drastic changes in our taste. Since it was discovered fine strong lustrous silk has been wooing the world.

The cultivation of silk and the craft of silk weaving are even more fascinating we thought it would be interesting to get an insight into the story of a silk thread, let's begin with the backbone of sericulture the silkworm. Commercial silk is obtained by cultivating different species of silkworm the most widely and most commercially used species is Bombyx Mori native to Asia. Silkworm are soft bodied and slow-moving and relatively fast growing insects like other insects silkworm to go through four stages of development egg, Larva, pupa and adult. The larva is a caterpillar, the pupa is what the silkworm changes into after spinning its cocoon before emerging as a month.

#SeriTourism Centre – Silk World @ #Yercaud: The Department of #Sericulture, Government of #TamilNadu is the overall authority of all Sericulture related activities of the State. The Department involves in transfer of technologies through effective extension, providing technical and financial assistance, marketing facilities and ensuring fair prices to the farmers and entrepreneurs for their produces.

Also, the department owns units for offering various services to its stakeholders. One among the unit is the Government Seed Farm, Yercaud which is located adjacent to the Rose garden of the #Horticulture department.

The growing demand for #AgriTourism and the opportunity for earning remuneration have pushed the Department to convert the Farm as a tourism spot with the primary objectives of creating widespread awareness about Sericulture – #Silk making and its prospects as a profitable profession.

The Centre has been established under the State Innovation Fund – #TamilNadu Innovative Initiatives of State Planning Commission at a cost of Rs.350 crore.

Arani Silk Saree Weaving - Vellore

Sarees are generally the traditional wear worn across India in different styles depending on the region and occasion. Silk sarees or Pattu sarees are distinguished for their intricate work along with the Zari that is considered special. Each saree is varied with their pattern of designs and motifs. Both frame loom and pit loom is used to weave these silk sarees, throw shuttle (manually) is used for the production of these sarees.

These sarees are generally characterized by huge contrast borders that offer an ethnic look with the appealing color combination, made through the inclusion of floral motifs and geometric patterns. Traditional motifs found are peacock and parrot with colors in mustard, pink, red, green, blue and black. Silk saree woven at Arani are generally made on the handlooms and the power looms. It takes minimum of 1 week to weave a handloom saree and 1 day on the power loom.
