Exploring Lake Tōya in Hokkaido!
A few days ago, I went on a small holiday with my wife to Hokkaido. We set out to our final destination on Lake Tōya (洞爺湖). Lake Tōya is a volcanic caldera lake in Shikotsu-Toya National Park, Abuta District, Hokkaidō, Japan. Lake Tōya was called Kim'un-to (キムウン (kim'un) means in the mountainand ト (to) means lake) by the Ainu. We stayed at a hotel in small town of Toyako. From here we visited the Sōbetsu town (壮瞥町) and then headed for Shōwa-shinzan (昭和新山). Shōwa-shinzan is a volcanic lava dome in the Shikotsu-Toya National Park, Hokkaidō, Japan, next to Mount Usu. Nearby is the Ainu (アイヌ) museum, it's actually a large straw hut with some of the tools and artefacts of the Ainu.

Mechanical, underground bike parking maximizes space in Tokyo
With an estimated 9 million cyclists, Tokyo has a parking problem. Japanese engineering firm Giken Seisakusho believes the solution involves going underground. Their Eco Cycle underground bike parking is only 8.15 meters in diameter, but it can store up to 204 bicycles.
The idea began with underground car parking (Eco Park) 20 years ago. They later moved into parking bicycles below ground and today the firm has 47 Eco Cycle units: 28 in Tokyo and 19 in other Japanese cities.
Giken’s Tsunenobu Nozaki gave us a tour of one of their smart underground systems at Tokyo’s Hachioji Train Station that spins bikes into a parking spots as deep as 11 meters in just 13 seconds.

Too many bicycles and not enough space in Japan - so what do they do? They dig wells in the ground and build robotic systems to store your two wheelers underground - safe from harsh weather and naughty thieves.
