The Silver Comet Trail is located 13 miles northwest of Atlanta, Georgia. It's free of charge, and travels west through Cobb, Paulding, and Polk counties. This quiet, non-motorized, paved trail is for walkers, hikers, bicyclists, rollerbladers, horses, dog walkers, and is wheelchair accessible.
The Silver Comet Trail is 61.5 miles long, and starts at the Mavell Road Trailhead in Smyrna, Georgia. It ends at the Georgia/Alabama state line, near Cedartown and The Esom Hill Trailhead.
At the Georgia/Alabama state line, the Silver Comet connects to the 33-mile long Chief Ladiga Trail. Plans are underway to extend the Chief Ladiga an additional 7 miles. Both the Silver Comet Trail and Chief Ladiga are fully paved rail-trails built on abandoned railroad lines. The combined Silver Comet and Chief Ladiga trail length is estimated to be 94.5 paved miles from Smyrna, Georgia to Anniston, Alabama.
Please remember to bring plenty to drink for you and your pet. Water fountains along the trail may not be working.

The Silver Comet Trail is a rail trail and is named for the Silver Comet passenger train that used the same route from 1947 to 1969. It begins in Smyrna, Georgia, runs west through Paulding and Polk counties, and connects with Alabama's Chief Ladiga Trail at the Georgia-Alabama border.
As of September 2008, the entire 61.5-mile (99 km) Silver Comet Trail was paved and open for riding. The Silver Comet and Chief Ladiga trails join to form one continuous 94-mile (151 km) trail from Smyrna, Georgia to Anniston, Alabama.Additionally, the Cobb County Department of Transportation has built the Silver Comet Connector, a one-mile extension, to join the Silver Comet Trail with Highland Station, a shopping center at South Cobb Dr. and East-West Connector, Smyrna, Ga.
[ADV] Silver Comet Trail - West Georgia
The Silver Comet Trail is a 60+ mile PATH rails to trails project that runs from Smyrna Georgia to Esom Hill where it connects with the 30+ mile Chief Ladiga trail at the Alabama State line. With lots of benches, a mild trail grade, and lots of town stops, this trail is good for beginners and experienced riders alike.
The section covered in this video was supposed to go all the way to Hiran Georgia, but unfortunately I had technical difficulties and had to cut the trip short in between Cedartown and Rockmart. The section from Cedartown to Camp Comet was uncharacteristic to rail trails because it follows slightly off the original rail bed - resulting in a few steep but short hills. The trail itself was very well marked - mile markers at every intersection and then some. About 12' wide concrete slabs make for a very durable riding surface. Watch out for sweetgum balls and leaves if you're riding a road bike!

Bikepacking the Chief Ladiga and Silver Comet Trail December 2018
For Marianne's birthday we decided to take our bikes and ride the Ladiga Trail and Silver Comet Trail from our house to Smyrna, Ga. We intended to leave on that Thursday, but rain and thunderstorms delayed us until Friday at about 10. We set out from our front door and rode through the JSU campus until we met the trail, and then rode 40 miles across plains and mountains until we arrived in Cedartown, Ga. well after darkness fell. We stayed in a hotel that night and ate at Wafflehouse for dinner. Part 2 will be day 2!
Our Gear:

Silver Comet Trail 1/5
Part of our 40 mile round trip bike ride down the Silver Comet Trail. We started at the Nathan Dean Sports Complex in Rockmart Ga and went to the Chamber of Commerce Trail Head in Dallas Ga. Some of the highlights as you can see in the videos were going through tunnels and going over the old train tressel. Video was shot using a Panasonic FX33 Lumix digital camera. Sorry if the video is too shaky its hard to film and ride at the same time!
Silver Comet Trail 1
This was shot on the way to the Silver Comet Trail (as it says) of me expressing my concern for the bikes on the back of the car. Keep in mind that a bike fell off last time in the middle of the road. They were safe, though.. Both ways! :) We know you cared a lot. ha
Tanglefoot Trail Part 1
In Mississippi is the 43.6 mile Tanglefoot Trail. It is another Rails to Tail that runs from New Albany to Houston. For the most part it is flat but is still a very fun one to do.
Here is day 1 of my Bikepacking trip from north to south and back.
Silver Comet and Chief Ladiga Trails Completion Ceremony
The celebration of the completion of the longest hard surface paved trail in the USA, the combined Silver Comet
and Chief Ladiga trails is yours to watch. The celebration took place at the state line gateway near Esom Hill, GA. on September 27th, 2008.
It is now possible to ride these trails between points near Smyrna, Georgia and Anniston, Alabama for a distance of about 95 miles.
Instead of a ribbon cutting ceremony, they had a ribbon tying-together ceremony, to celebrate the linking of the two states together by these two wonderful trails. Many people worked very hard to make these trails a reality, and many volunteers and workers along the way help keep the trails maintained and safe. My sincere thanks to everyone involved! :-)
Vinings
Just 10 miles northwest of downtown Atlanta is the charming, unincorporated village of Vinings, in Cobb County. Lying along the Chattahoochee River, Vinings has a charming small-town feel with a sophisticated suburban vibe. Beautiful homes, low taxes, good schools and an average year-round temperature of 65 degrees also combine to make Vinings a very attractive community. Housing options in Vinings vary widely, from condo townhomes to extravagant riverfront estates. And it's still inside the Perimeter!
Vinings is convenient to major retail meccas, such as Cumberland Mall, with anchors Macy's and Sears. It's flanked by Costco and is across the highway from the Cobb Galleria. Vinings Jubilee is an upscale outdoor shopping center not far from the corporate headquarters of The Home Depot. It was built to feature turn-of-the-century architecture in tribute to the area's past and became the symbolic heart and gathering place of Vinings.
Vinings can trace its history back to the 19th century. In the 1830s, it was the site of Hardy Pace's ferry, shuttling settlers across the Chattahoochee. Later, it became a construction site for a bridge on the Western and Atlantic Railroad. Because supplies were delivered so often to the architect, William H. Vining, at Vining's station, his name took hold.
Vinings is proud of its heritage. The Vinings Historic Preservation Society (VHPS) is a nonprofit organization that promotes the spirit of Vinings and its historic structures and educates the public about local history.
One structure is the Pace House, a storied property built from what was left of Hardy Pace's 17-room antebellum mansion. General Sherman took the house as his headquarters as he planned the siege of Atlanta and the end of the Confederacy. Pace's son returned from the war to find the family home in ruins, and sometime between 1865 and 1874, he cobbled together a more modest dwelling. Today, the Pace House includes a catering kitchen and offers up Southern hospitality for weddings and other special events.
The Old Pavilion, dating from 1874, was originally an open-air shelter for railroad day trippers from Atlanta seeking river breezes, and now, it's another special venue for weddings and events.
The Yarbrough House was built in 1880 for Hardy Pace's granddaughter, Ella Pace Yarbrough, and stayed in the family for more than 100 years. It had a brief life as a teahouse and another as a restaurant, but was eventually donated to the Vinings Historic Preservation Society, which is restoring it.
Vinings is located near the Silver Comet Trail, which runs through Georgia to Alabama and Tennessee, and the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, which stretches for 48 miles along the river to Lake Lanier.
Of course, more important than a community's heritage and its natural setting is its access to desirable schools. Cobb County schools in Marietta that serve Vinings students include Sope Creek Elementary, East Side Elementary, Murdock Elementary, Mount Beth Elementary and Tritt Elementary; Dickerson Middle, Hightower Trail Middle, Dodgen Middle, Mabry Middle and Simpson Middle; George Walton Comprehensive High School and Lassiter High School.
In 2012, Walton High School was nationally recognized as a top school by both Newsweek magazine and U.S. News & World Report. It's also been named a Georgia School of Excellence and a National Blue Ribbon School and has received Advanced Placement State Scholars and Sieman's Science Awards. It was one of the first schools in Georgia to achieve Conversion Charter status.
Walton offers an Advanced Placement (AP) program, a STEM Academy and an International Spanish Academy.
For students at Lassiter, options include the Advanced Placement program and LHS STEM Academy with math, biomedical and engineering tracks. The STEM capstone internship gives students real-world experience with area businesses.
Private schools for Vinings students include Pace Academy, the Lovett School and the Westminster Schools.
In Smyrna, which lies next to Vinings, there is also Campbell High School. Campbell is an International Baccalaureate (IB) School, and junior and senior students may earn credits that allow them to enter college as sophomores. The IB curriculum emphasizes math, science and the humanities and requires proficiency in a language.
In 2013-2014, Campbell was also honored as an Advanced Placement (AP) Honor School in recognition of its increased access to rigorous coursework.
