Laayoune silver market popular despite cheaper imports
(19 May 2016) LEAD IN:
Laayoune's silver market is still popular despite competition from cheaper imports.
The Western Saharan city is famous for its handmade jewellery.
STORY-LINE:
Dah Mayya works with skill on a small piece of metal.
He's a craftsman in Laayoune, a Western Saharan city renowned for its silver market and handmade jewellery.
The manufacturers buy raw silver from Morocco or Mauritania.
Mauritanian silver tends to cost more but is considered to be better quality.
The price of raw silver sometimes decreases, sometimes increases. For a long time raw silver was very expensive. But actually now it is more available and traders buy it, he says.
We use it in traditional handicraft: rings, bracelets, earrings.
Laayoune has department stores, trendy boutiques, antique shops and outdoor markets.
And its silver market attracts both locals and tourists.
But trade is often conducted at night, when the air cools and customers can avoid the high daytime temperatures.
Shoppers can browse watches, bracelets and even coffee pots.
But traders says business is very seasonal.
The demand from customers is higher in the holidays when tourism is here or in the summer period of ceremonies. Also during feasts, says Hassan Ijremki, a silver goods dealer.
In the other months the demand is not high, generally. Trade does not die, it just becomes tired.
These handmade goods face stiff competition from imported items manufactured using more modern methods.
Typically brought in from Turkey, they can cost two-thirds of the price of pieces made in Laayoune.
But the home grown silverware is still cheaper than gold products which fetch 398 Moroccan Dirhams (14 US dollars) a gramme.
Here, women prefer silver to gold and they use it in ceremonies, weddings, feasts, says Zahra Jari, a customer from Laayoune.
Silver prices differ. There is the expensive and the less expensive silver. Everybody buys according to his or her capabilities.
Jewellery sparkles on the shelves of the silver market.
French tourist Houda Nour browses the items, selecting some to try.
She comes here to buy presents for friends and products to decorate her house.
I like this metal and I also like this culture, she says.

Kasbah in Tangier Morocco Africa 2014
While visiting Tangier, Morocco, Africa, we walked through the Kasbah, an ancient fortress with narrow streets not meant for cars. The only things going through the streets back when the buildings were built, other than people, were horses, dogs and cats! There are several gates that lead down to the Medina. The music on the video is Adrift in Tangier by Ottmar Liebert.
