INSIDE A REAL COPPER MINE - Britannia Mine
The Britannia Copper Mine is over 100 years old and has since been turned into the BC Museum of Mining. It is a huge and beautiful building with a really unique tour that takes you through the old mine shafts and shows you some of the original machinery. Want to feel like a gold miner? They have gold panning as well!
The mine is on Highway 99 between Vancouver and Whistler and is worth a visit.

The White Lady of Thetis Cove, Vancouver Island BC
A popular legend of an apparition of a woman in white, said to haunt the beach. additionally, the 150-year-old Four Mile House Pub (she's also said to be attached to) has a stain glass window displayed above an old fireplace in her honour. I've included these images as well.

Vancouver Island Porsche Club Roadtrip (feat. Tobu) [Timelapse]
A buddy of mine and 5 other Porsche owners drive the backroads of Vancouver Island. THE CATCH? Avoid the Highway and Malahat as much as possible. We drove from Nanaimo through Crofton, stopped in Chemainus, and navigated the winding roads of Goldstream, eventually finding our way to Bin 4 Burger Lounge in Langford, BC.

Ucona River, Vancouver Island, Canada
The Ucona is one of several amazing runs in the Gold River area. If you're on the Island, Gold River is a premium paddling destination. The Ucona doesn't have it's own gauge, but the Gold River gauge was reading around 100cms at the same time.

The Wilds - 40 Million Salmon (Can't Be Wrong), Arntzen/Wright/Sinclair/Newcombe
Live at the Brackendale Art Gallery, Jan. 12, 2013. Holly Arntzen, Kevin Wright, David Sinclair, Brian Newcombe.
40 Million Salmon Can't Be Wrong tells a story about historical events, and draws attention to the impacts of climate change on plankton pastures. Here is some background to the lyrics.
Scientific articles document that in 2008, Kasatochi Volcano erupted in the Aleutian Islands, spewing vast amounts of iron-laced dust over the ocean which resulted in huge plankton blooms.
CBC: Volcanic eruption led to BC salmon boom: scientist
The baby sockeye that were out in the North Pacific that year returned in historic record numbers in 2010--the 40 Million Salmon. Back in 1958 the same thing happened: a volcanic eruption resulted in a burst of ocean life and record salmon returns.
Our West Coast wild salmon put on 95% of their body weight in the open ocean, where they feed on krill and smaller fish that are sustained by the bottom of the food web: the plankton. Phytoplankton require mineral nutrients to do their job of photosynthesis, just as plants on land draw up minerals from the soil. The source of minerals for phytoplankton in the North Pacific is dust blown on prevailing winds from areas such as the Gobi Desert. In recent decades there has been less dust blowing on the wind, causing a severe lack of plankton, and therefore ocean life. There is scientific evidence that the reason for less dust is because there is more plant life growing in the Gobi Desert as a result of global warming. In some ecosystems (not all), greater amounts of carbon dioxide result in higher plant growth, because plants like carbon dioxide. Another possible cause for less dust is that in recent decades the Chinese government has been implementing agricultural practises that reduce soil loss, such as planting winter wheat.
40 Million Salmon Can't Be Wrong is our way of saying: something remarkable happened that we need to understand more about. The salmon don't lie. We wish that we can get on immediately with massive investment in science research to know more. We've done very well melting the arctic ice cap. Can we not apply the same energy and creativity into saving our precious wild salmon while there is maybe still a chance to do so?
Thanks for listening!
