Cheap Family Night at the Drive-In Movie Theater: This Millennial Keeps a Slice of Americana Alive
Read the full article:
Drive-in movie theaters are not only a slice of America, they can be an affordable family night out. For about $20, a family of four can watch two back-to-back feature films at the Silver Moon Drive-In Theater in Lakeland, Fla..
While there were about 4,000 drive-ins in the United States during the 1950s, there are still 330 across the country. Chip Sawyer is a 25-year-old owner of the Silver Moon, which is the oldest in Florida. He is helping to keep a slice of Americana — and one of the last remaining cheap family nights — alive for the next generation.

The Polk Theatre Lakeland Florida Historic
The Historic Polk Theatre presents live performances and films year round. The theatre is also available to rent for business meetings, theatrical productions, weddings, private film screenings, receptions, fundraisers and dance recitals.
The Polk Theatre was built during a golden age in the United States - the stock market had yet to crash ( though the boom had ended in Florida) and the clouds of World War II were not yet on the horizon. Even so, it was quite a leap of faith to build a vaudeville/movie palace in Lakeland in 1928. The population hovered at only 15,000 people and it was a rural community.
The two most impressive technological features of the Polk were the theatres 100 ton air wash system to chill the air, and its Vitaphone sound on reel film system. The air conditioning system was such a drain on the citys power supply that during its early years of operation it caused lights to dim all across town when turned on. It also required an operator to turn it on and off. When it became too cold, an usher ran down to the basement to tell the operator to shut the system down.

Visiting Lakeland, Florida - Detroit Tigers Spring Training
Every March, the Detroit Tigers return to sunny central Florida for a little pre-season ball. Their spring training games are played at Joker Marchant stadium in Lakeland, which has been proudly been the Spring Training home of the Detroit Tigers for more than 50 years - the longest-standing relationship between a major league team and a spring training host city.
Even if you're not a Tigers fan, Lakeland is still the perfect home base for your spring training getaway, with several Florida Grapefruit League spring training teams within about an hours’ drive – including the Atlanta Braves, the New York Yankees, the Philadelphia Phillies, the Houston Astros and the Toronto Blue Jays.

Historic Tahqualand Theatre of Newberry, UP Michigan
This Ornate 1930's GEM of a theatre, started out as the STATE THEATRE.
Built during the depression in Newberry, Upper Peninsula of MI.
The Tahqua Land Theatre was closed and in severe disrepair when we (The Dunkeld's) bought it in 1972. After a year of cleaning coal dust and gum, updating wiring and plumbing, rebuilding projectors, installing projector equipment we opened in 1973. Operating continued until 2001, at which time we closed for extensive renovation.

Italian Artisans were brought in for 9 months of extensive redecorating. We didn't know digital conversion reformatting was baring down on us at twice the stated speed. Nobody comprehended this, nor the exurbanite cost to convert. After installing state of the art rocker seating, the theatre re-opened in 2003.
Going Digital
We are born optimists otherwise we sure wouldn't be in business. In keeping with Kickstarter requirements, if Tahqua-Land Theatre's campaign, Digital or Die cannot raise 100% of the needed funding within the allotted time period, the Kickstarter organization does not collect the money for the project on behalf of the theatre, therefore no charges to anyone's credit card will be made.
Along with going digital to stay open, we will also be able to offer movie-goers alternate content. We'll be able to show a new genre of movie types like: sports, comedy, live events, etc...offer the theatre goer big city entertainment to a small town.
There is nothing that compares with being a part of a theatre full of laughing little kids or screaming girls or teary eyed patrons leaving knowing that they will be back soon for different adventures into the past, present and future.
The Tahqua Land Theatre is located in Newberry, situated in the heart of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. We are the only theatre located within 70 miles of our location.
Our immediate project is the digital projector upgrade, updating the screen and tweaking the sound system. Any excess monies will then go towards energy efficient heating to upgrade our 83 year old system. Because of our freezing climate, the theatre roof also needs attention. If the needed funds are not raised, The Tahqua Land Theatre will then have no choice but to close its historic doors and Go Dark. We thank you in advance for your support and help.
We want to thank you and give you our sincerest appreciation for your help and support for this project. Please pass along this information to a friend. For more historical information click on our Facebook page at: facebook.com/tahquatheatre
