ETHIOPIA - GONDAR AND THE SIMIEN MOUNTAINS
Gondar region is famous for its castles, the Italian history and above all for the Simien mountains. It is also the home of the Falash-Muras, the Jews of Ethiopia. Debark is a lively village bordering the Simien National Park. To reach the top of the Simiens one must climb from about 3,500 m altitude to 4,000 meters, the Imet Gogo. The vegetation and the animals are quite astounding, especially the human-like Gelada baboons.

The Simien Mountains National Park (Ethiopia)
Simien Mountains National Park is one of the National Parks of Ethiopia. Located in the Semien (North) Gondar Zone of the Amhara Region, its territory covers the Simien Mountains and includes Ras Dashan, the highest point in Ethiopia.
It is home to a number of extremely rare species, including the Ethiopian wolf, Gelada Baboon, and the Walia Ibex, a wild goat found nowhere else in the world. The Caracal also occurs within the Simien Mountains. More than 50 species of birds inhabit the park, including the impressive Bearded Vulture, or Lammergeier, with its 10-foot (3m) wingspan.
The park is crossed by an unpaved road which runs from Debarq, where the administrative headquarters of the park is located, east through a number of villages to the Buahit Pass, where the road turns south to end at Mekane Berhan 10 kilometers beyond the park boundary.

The Grand Canyon of Ethiopia! The Simien Mountains National Park in Northern Ethiopia is an exotic setting with unique wildlife and breath-taking views on a landscape shaped by nature and traditional agriculture. The natural beauties of this region have always filled visitors from Ethiopia and abroad with awe. Gentle highland ridges at altitudes above 3600 meters above sea level (m asl), covered with grasses, isolated trees (Erica &bored) and the bizarre Giant Lobelia (Lobelia rhynchopetalum) are found on the high plateau that ends abruptly at 1000- to 2000-m deep escarpments.
The margins of this high plateau consist of precipitous cliffs and deep, canyon-style gorges. In some places, the escarpment forms small elevations that offer splendid natal lookout points. The spectacular views from the observation points at Gidir Got and lmet Gogo in the center of the Park offer unparalleled panoramas along the high plateau and down to the lowland areas. Given the right meteorological conditions, views reaching up to a hundred kilometers over the valleys and the terraces of the Tekeze lowland basin are no exception. Geologically speaking, the entire highlands of the Simien mountains consist of dark Trapp basalt and bright, soft turf. They alternate and constitute a massive complex that is more than 3000 m thick. This complex was formed by volcanic eruptions in the Tertiary Oligocene-Miocene Age some 20-30 million years ago; ever since, it has been going through processes of uplifting and erosion.
The main attraction of the Simien Moumains National Park is its biosphere: the steep cliffs and the cool climate at the altitude of the Erica tree line (3600 to 4000 m ash) have created conditions that are appropriate for the survival of an ibex species (Capra ibex wee) endemic to the Simien Mountains. Despite the severe restriction of their habitat over the last centuries, several hundred animals have survived up to the present. Apart from the Walya ibex, many other animal species are found in the Park, for example the endemic Simien fox or Ethiopian wolf (Canis .071817,51-3 simony’s), several birds of prey, the endemic Gelada baboon ( Theropithecusgelada), the Klippspringer (Oreotragus omotragus), and the bush buck (liagelphus scriptus). The rareness of these species formed the backbone of the concept for conservation of the area, which led to the establishment of the Simien Mountains National Park in 1969. Simien mountain national park the Frist park national in Ethiopia.
simien mountain established in 1966 and 1978 the world heritage site in Ethiopia.
The human population living in the area adds to the distinctiveness of this special natural environment. The traditional lifestyle of the rural population and their survival in a rather harsh climate and with scarce natural resources make for the most striking impressions a visitor will have when trekking in the Park and its surrounding rural area.

Simien Mountain & Fasilides Castle | Gondar Ethiopia - I got so sick!
We visited Simien Mountain and Emperor Fasilides Castle in Gondar Ethiopia. When I say what i sight, I truly mean WHAT A SIGHT! It was the most gorgeous hike I'd ever been on. I'm a city girl from New York I never knew such beauty existed. However I also got really sick, honestly it could have been the milk, the fish, the african massage, the khat...who knows??? But still I wouldn't change a thing!

Simien Mountain National Park, Ethiopia - Oct 2019

Greetings fellow Travel Bugs!
You have now reached the Arctic traveller’s corner of the internet. I am currently based in Ethiopia, so a lot of my content will be from this part of the globe, though I will share my other adventures as well.
This instalment is from the awesome Simien Mountains.
Day 1: Gondar-Sankaber (3250 m), 3-4 hours
We got picked up from our hotel and journeyed to the trekking headquarters in Debark. The 100 km journey took about two hours. At the headquarters we arranged our permits to the park and picked up our scout. After that we drove another hour before we started our first day introductory walk. This first hike an easy one along the northern edge of the escarpment with nice view points over the foothills and plains of northern Ethiopia. Here we encounter gelada baboon. We stayed the nigh at Sankaber.
Day 2: Sankaber - Gich
Sankaber – Gich (3600 m), 5-6 hrs
We followed the northern escarpment eastward, before we descend a little into the Kaba Valley. After that we climbed up before we reach Gich Abyss and continue over a narrow ridge to a cliff where we had a spectacular view of the abyss towards the Simien foothills. We also found a large waterfall here, where the Jinbar River plunges 500 m into the abyss. After lunch we walk through fields of barley before we arrive at the Gich camp which is a good area to look for lammergeyer and thick billed raven. After a relaxing afternoon, we took a short hike up to Kedadit to enjoy sunset plus the gorgeous shaded landscapes down to the cliff side towards to the eastern direction and returned to the camp for dinner.
Day 3: Gich - Chennek
Gich – Chennek (3600 m), 7-8 hrs
From Gich camp we strolled through endless fields of Giant Lobelia before we reach the towering cliffs of Imet-Gogo (3926 m). After that we descended into the Jinbahir River Valley. The trail follows the edge of the escarpment, which is completely vertical here for several hundred meters. We climbed to a summit of 4070 m where we had lunch. After lunch we descended to Chennek camp for about two hours along a steep trail.
Day 3: Chenek – Buwahit 5-6 hrs
We started the day early and climb the second highest peak in the Simien mountains Buwahit (4430m) and was rewarded with some spectacular views. We could even see the highest peek in Ethiopia, Ras-Dejen, at 4543 m. We also encountered one of the endemic wild animals in Ethiopia called Walia Ibex (a goat), and the Ethiopian Red Fox. We backed down to Chenek camp where we had lunch and a car picked us up on took us the 4 hours back to Gondar.
If you find yourself in Ethiopia and you have the opportunity to go to the Simiens, just go! You are going to thank me later.
