Entry from: Fort Simpson, Canada
Entry Title: 13 Fort Simpson
Entry:
We left the Ingraham Trail early but stopped in Yellowknife for supplies, laundry and the internet; then new adventures awaited. Our goal was Fort Providence on the first day where we fished for Bogie on arriving and also for an hour the next morning -- caught and released numerous large Pike but the Pickerel still elude me (one got away when I tried to adjust the reel drag). This is also the only route that we will backtrack in the NWT since we are eventually heading for Fort Nelson in BC via the Liard Trail. It is interesting that the smoke from numerous BC fires is starting to affect the crystal clear skies of the north.
After a quick shower in the morning (luxury) and breakfast cereal with fresh picked Saskatoon berries, we ferried the Mackenzie River and headed towards Fort Simpson (originally named Fort of the Forks) where the Liard and Mackenzie Rivers meet. The sky is still a little hazy but the expected rain will hopefully clear the horizon again. On the way, a Black Bear challenged us for use of the gravel road (another thousand kilometres on dirt) -- the van eventually pushed him to the side of the road.
The Liard River is huge and is fed by many other rivers, including the Nahanni, but is still much smaller than the mighty Mackenzie River that pours out of Great Slave Lake. Fort Simpson, with a population of six-hundred, is kept alive by the ferry -- most of the town is supported by rich paddlers accessing the numerous rivers via plane (including the Nahanni National Park Reserve).
Also spent last night out -- we ate at the Sub-Arctic Kitchen in advance celebration of Cindy's birthday on Sunday August the ninth. The Chinese food was actually really good (hot ginger beef plus curried vegetables with steamed rice) considering that we are in the far north.
Decided to stay in Fort Simpson only one night -- off again towards the Liard Trail to view the only real mountains in the NorthWest Territories... More updates soon.

Way of the Heart Film - Pain and Renewal in Fort Simpson, NWT
Forgiveness.
It’s a difficult road for most, even longer and tougher for the Dene of Fort Simpson and the surrounding Deh Cho area of the Northwest Territories who survived residential school.
Way of the Heart showcases the high hopes for the future of the new, $1.3-million Sacred Heart Church building among the people of the Deh Cho region, including healing the relationship with the Catholic Church – in part, by incorporating the Dene language, spirituality and traditions into the Mass and other ceremonies.

Best Things To Do In The Northwest Territories - Canada Road Trip Travel Documentary
In this video, we share some of the best things to do in the Northwest Territories, including Yellowknife, Inuvik, and Tuktoyaktuk!
Welcome to the NWT!
With more than one million square kilometres of land area and a population of less than 50,000, the Northwest Territories is about as wild as it gets. It's certainly not an easy area to visit (many places are fly-in, many roads are gravel, and distances are vast) but for those who make the effort, there are incredible things to experience.
With boreal forest, arctic tundra, some of Canada's greatest waterfalls, a vibrant indigenous culture, and boundless wilderness, this is an adventurers paradise!
We explored the NWT from August 16 - September 1st, 2017!

About Rick and Morty:
Rick and Morty is Adult Swim's most scientifically accurate animated comedy. Created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon, it catalogues the bizarre misadventures of a bored scientific genius/drunkard and his socially awkward grandson, Morty. Their exploits tend to have unintended consequences for Morty's dysfunctional family, especially his unfailingly mediocre father, Jerry.
