A number of scenic gaps pierce the West MacDonnell Ranges. One of these is Simpsons Gap, site of one of the most prominent waterholes in the region. The area is an important spiritual site to the Arrarnta Aboriginal people, where several dreaming trails and stories cross. At dawn or dusk Simpsons gap it is renowned as a place to see Black-footed Rock-wallabies along the gap's short walking track. Good examples of many of the vegetation communities of the MacDonnell Ranges are found in the Simpsons Gap area, including large stands of Mulga, and the area around the gap is a major stronghold for some of the rare and relict plants of the region. It is accessible all year round with the cooler months (April to September) being the most pleasant.
The Visitor Information Centre is just past the entrance gate and offers a good introduction for first time visitors. The displays highlights points of interest within the park and provides information on the areas natural and cultural history.

Simpsons Gap Bike Path, Alice Springs, Northern Territory, Australia
The Simpson's Gap Bike Path joins Alice Springs with Simpsons Gap some 17km away. The trial is paved the whole distance and traverses rolling hills that offer spectacular views of the West MacDonnell Ranges.

Simpson's Gap, Alice Springs
Simpson's Gap is less than half an hour's drive from Alice Springs. One of the important permanent waterholes for the Arrernte people, it became just as valuable to white settlers in the nineteenth and twentieth century who ran cattle in the
area. Nearby, a battle between the Arrernte and settlers after the Arrernte ambushed a party carrying stores and food is believed to have cost the lives of 200-300 Arrernte.
Today Simpson's Gap is one of the most hauntingly peaceful sites in all of the West MacDonnells.

Simpsons Gap and Alice Springs
We meet up at the IBIS hotel at lunch time for the Contiki tour of the red centre. The first stop was Simpson Gap. It was a small pass in the MacDonnell Range, about 17km outside Alice Springs. Cause by a small gap in the range was formed by tectonic activities, the over millions of year the small river enlarged the gap into its present form.
The next stop for our tour was ANZAC hill in Alice, to commemorate the soldiers who fought in wars under the Australian and New Zealand armed forces.
The next stop was the Alice's Springs Reptile centre where we held Bearded Dragons, blue tongue and a Olive Python.
