Sindhudurg Fort -
Sindhudurg district, Maharashtra
Built 1664
Built by Hirojee Indalkar (Chief Architect)
Sindhudurg Fort (Marathi सिंधुदुर्ग किल्ला) is a historical fort that occupies an islet in the Arabian Sea, just off the coast of Maharashtra in Western India. The fortress lies on the shore of Malvan town of Sindhudurg District in the Konkan region of Maharashtra, 450 kilometres (280 mi) south of Mumbai.
This fort was constructed by Shivaji, the Chhatrapati of the Maratha Empire. The main object was to counter rising influence of foreign colonizers (The English, Dutch, French and Portuguese merchants) and to curb the rise of Siddis of Janjira. The construction was done under the supervision of Hirojee Indulkar, in the year 1664.. The fort was built on a small island which was known as the Khurte bet (bet means island in Marathi).
Structural details :
Over 4000 pounds of lead were used in the casting and foundation stones were firmly laid down. Construction started on 25 November 1664. Built over a period of three years(1664 ―1667), the sea fort is spread over 48 acres, with a two-mile (3 km) long rampart, and walls that are 30 feet (9.1 m) high and 12 feet (3.7 m) thick. The massive walls were designed to serve as a deterrent to approaching enemies and to the waves and tides of the Arabian Sea. The main entrance is concealed in such a way that no one can pinpoint it from outside.
At a time when traveling by sea was banned by scriptures, this construction on an island represents the revolutionary mindset of its engineer. A remain of an iron mould can be seen.
How to reach Sindhudurg

The number of permanent residents staying in the fort has been in decline since the fort's abandonment. Most of the residents moved out because of inadequate employment opportunities, but over 15 families remain in the fort. The fort is closed for tourists during rainy season due to the high tides in the sea.

Not only is this mighty fort a historically significant attraction, but the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape makes it a popular tourist spot. Protruding right from the midst of the mighty Arabian Sea, this fort makes up for a delightfully charming sight. Its rich historical background only adds to the experience of this place.
Built by none other than Chhatrapati Shivaji, the construction of Sindhudurg Fort utilizes the natural protection of the surrounding rocks to their advantage. With its solid walls and conspicuous gateways, this fort is a fascinating piece of history which makes it a favourite tourist spot. Perhaps one of the reasons why this magnificent fort has managed to stand the test of time would be its unique and unyielding construction style. The foundation of the mighty building was laid down in the lead, and the natural protection provided by the surrounding rocks acted as an impregnable barrier against any enemy forces. Sindhudurg Fort also has 42 bastions, which still stand tall and is surrounded by several smaller forts such as the Padmagad, Rajkot and Sarjekot Fort. A small temple dedicated to the Chhatrapati also finds a place within the bounds of the fort.

Scuba Diving near Tarkarli, Sindhudurg Fort, Malvan, Maharashtra
Scuba Diving and Snorkeling adventures can be experienced near Tarkarli, Sindhudurg / Malvan Fort except in monsoons.
Scuba diving is a form of underwater diving where the diver uses a self-contained underwater breathing apparatus (scuba) which is completely independent of surface supply, to breathe underwater. Scuba divers carry their own source of breathing gas, usually compressed air, allowing them greater independence and freedom of movement than surface-supplied divers, and longer underwater endurance than breath-hold divers.

Sindhudurg is an amazing fort with much of its structure still intact. It has a protected entrance of “Gomukhi” type similar to Raigad. When we approach the fort in a boat, we cannot see the entrance as it is blocked two bastions. The bastions are built from well carved stone blocks and have numerous shafts for gunning the invading enemy. There is an idol of Lord Hanuman carved on the entrance and it has a small Nagaarkhana or a loft on the top for Nagaare.
The most amazing part of Sindhudurg is its fort walls which are very strong, and still very intact. We can walk from one end of the fort on the wall, which is around 4 m wide. There are 26 bastions on this wall, so that every direction is protected by canons. There are stairs at intervals to get down, around 45 staircases. The complete wall is about 4 km long. If we start a round from left as we enter the fort, we come across an enclosure where there are prints of palms of right hand and left leg inside. This happened when Shivaji Maharaj was inspecting the work and stepped on wet limestone. On 21st November 1763, Sambhaji Maharaj’s wife Jijabai wrote a letter to the officials to build enclosure around these prints and worship them daily.
If we proceed along the cement trail after entering, we find the temple of goddess “JariMari”. There is a unique palm tree with its trunk divided into two like a fork. Recently it was almost destroyed when lightning fell on the same. Ahead there is the temple of Shivaji Maharaj, the only one of its kind. Rajaram Maharaj established the idol of Shivaji Maharaj dressed as a boatman. Since a golden or silver mask is put on the idol with sacred clothes, we cannot see the complete idol and hence a photo of the idol is also kept there.

Sindhudurg Fort - 2015
Sindhudurg Fort was built with the help of huge rocks on the ‘Kurte' island in 1664-67 AD. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj personally selected this site. The construction was done under the supervision of Hiroji Indulkar. Cores of hones (gold coins) form Surat bounty, were spent to built this wonderful fort. One of the best preserved forts of the Marathas, the 48 acre Sindhudurg fort has a four kms long zigzag line of 9 meters high and 3 meters wide rampart with 42 bastions. The design of main door is an enigma. It has been a hallmark of Maratha Architecture of fort building. Shivaji’s palm and footprints are preserved here on dried lime slabs in a tower. Inside the Fort, temples of Maruti, Bhavani Devi, Shambhu Mahadev, Jarimari Mata, Mahapurush and ShivRajeshwar are worth seeing, all of which are in good condition. Chatrapati Shivaji’s younger son Rajaram in his remembrance built this ShivRajeshwar temple. Outside the southern wall there is a small beach, called Ranichi Vela (Queen’s private beach), where Queen Tarabai, daughter-in law of Shivaji, used to enjoy her sea-bath. Inside the Fort, there are three wells (Dudh Bav, Dahi Bav & Sakhar Bav)of drinkable water, which is a nature’s marvel as sea surrounds the fort on all four sides. The secret exit tunnel is also a attractions of the fort. The name of this fort is given to Sindhudurg district. Sindhudurg fort is a popular summer destination for Indian and foreign tourists to explore the island and go scuba-diving and snorkelling to view the coral reef on the outskirts of the island. Sindhudurg Fort is completely cut off during the monsoons.

Sindhudurg Fort | Malvan |
Sindhudurg Fort | Malvan |
