Fourth Episode: Time Stopper in Alleys
Western cities have plazas; Korea has alleys. These alleys are not just narrow streets crisscrossing a neighborhood, but a testament to Korea's rich history and hard-working people. Follow Magnum Photos photographer Alex Webb as he travels through time in Korea's alleyways.
Hannam-dong Sunrise Alley: A nostalgic past of a splendid city
Once an affluent community during Korea's economic growth in the 1960s, Sunrise Alley in Hannam-dong has survived widespread urban development. Named after Korea's quick-vanishing goblin, Dokkaebi Market nearby is also a well-known tourist destination. Alex Webb visits the neighborhood and the market, full of nostalgia in the middle of a modern city.
Modernization Alley in Daegu: One thousand alleys, one thousand tales
Together with the textile industry, the city of Daegu, with its 1,000 alleyways, came to represent Korea's modernization. No other city in the world possesses so many alleys within a radius of one kilometer. Listen to a thousand tales of hard-working Koreans making a living in the socks, sewing machine, and motorcycle alleys.
Bukchon Village in Seoul: Elegance in tradition
Bukchon Village, situated between Changdeok Palace and Gyeongbok Palace, used to be a residential area for noblemen of the Joseon era. It is one of the best preserved historical neighborhoods in Seoul, so discover bits of the city's 500-year history in the alleys of Bukchon Village.
Check out the historical alleys of Korea on Arirang TV at 1 pm, October 10, 2013.

Gary Knight, one of the world's top photojournalists, heads to Jeollabuk-do, South Korea. He starts his journey by uncovering the secrets of bamboo salt in Byeonsan and then is off to Saemangeum Sea Wall in Gunsan, standing witness to the country's changing landscape and those who are leading the transformation.
He makes a detour to Jeongeup, where local history and tradition is kept alive through an annual festival, and the future of the city is built on its cultural past.
Like the brilliant foliage of Mt. Naejangsan, Knight's travels through Jeollabuk-do are filled with vibrant beauty.

VLOGMAS IN KOREA ???????? ???? #11 - Helping Korean university students, and KTX Bullet Train snack time!
We helped Korean university students prepare for job hunting overseas. We did mock interviews in English, gave advice, and shared some tips about living/working outside of Korea.
It took place outside a small city south of Seoul, called Cheonan. It was at the JEI Leadership Education Center (
It also snowed for the first time this winter where we saw it stick to the ground! We then rode the KTX Bullet Train back to Seoul, and munched on some yummy gimbap rolls before napping and relaxing the rest of the day.
Thanks for watching and stay tuned for the next Vlogmas video!

South Korea's KTX
Based on France's TGV line, the KTX (Korea Train Express) is South Korea's high-speed railway. The trains are capable of reaching speeds up to 217 mph, which make them the forth line of bullet trains to hit that mark.
After being launched in 2004, KTX has been a remarkable success and plans to greatly expand the network are already well underway. In fact, the line is planned to connect Mokpo with Jeju Island, which will involve the construction of the world's longest undersea tunnel.

Dorasan Railway Station in South Korea
Dorasan Station is a railway station situated on the Gyeongui Line, which once connected North and South Korea and has now been restored. For several years the northernmost stop on the line was Dorasan Station, which is served by Tonggeun commuter trains.
On December 11, 2007, freight trains began traveling north past Dorasan Station into North Korea, taking materials to the Kaesong Industrial Region, and returning with finished goods. It was scheduled to make one 16-kilometer (9.9 mi) trip every weekday.
However, on December 1, 2008, the North Korean government closed the border crossing, after accusing South Korea of a confrontational policy. This coincided with the South Korean legislative election, 2008, and a change to a more conservative government.
