Singapore Botanic Gardens Travel Guide
A guide for visiting the Singapore Botanic Gardens, the most visited Botanic Garden in the world. I share everything you need to know to visit the Singapore Botanic Gardens including how to get there, what to bring, and I highlight the major attractions including the National Orchid Garden. If you like plants and nature, then the Singapore Botanic Garden is definitely a must see attraction in Singapore.
The 150 year old Singapore Botanic Gardens has a wide array of botanical and horticultural attractions. The Gardens has a rich history and a wonderful plant collection of worldwide significance. It is a unique example of the informal English Landscape Movement’s style in an equatorial climate.
The first botanical garden in Singapore was set up by Sir Stamford Raffles, the founder of Singapore, in 1822 on Government Hill at Fort Canning, mainly to introduce into cultivation economic crops. It closed in 1829 and, in 1859, at the present Tanglin site a new garden was developed by an Agri-Horticultural Society, and later handed over to the government in 1874. From an ornamental garden with roads, terraces, a band parade area and even a small zoo, it has come a long way in evolving into a leading equatorial botanic garden of 82 hectares, where major world crops, such as rubber and orchids were launched.

Exploring Singapore's Botanic Gardens
The Singapore Botanic Gardens is a national landmark and features a small tropical rainforest, a ginger garden, and an orchid garden. The Botanic Gardens is the country’s first UNESCO Heritage Site, joining the ranks of iconic landmarks such as Cambodia’s Angkor Wat and The Great Wall of China. Established in 1859 by the Agri-Horticultural Society, 60 acres of land were transformed from a disused plantation into the popular recreational garden you see today. As well as being a favorite recreation venue for jogging, dining or just lazing about, the sprawling grounds are also a leading center for botanical and horticultural research.

Singapore Botanic Gardens - National Orchid Garden - Singapore Travel Video
An enjoyable walk in the beautiful Singapore Botanic Gardens and the National Orchid Garden.
Since 1859, orchids have been closely associated with the Gardens. The products of the Gardens' orchid breeding programme, which began in 1928, deserve a place where they can be displayed in their full splendour. The very design of these orchids is, one could say, 'hand-crafted' by the Gardens' horticultural staff, dedicated to bringing out the finest in any hybrid cross.
With over 1000 species and 2000 hybrids on display, the splendour of these gorgeous blooms is absolutely a sight to behold at the National Orchid Garden.

The Singapore Botanic Gardens is a national landmark and features a small tropical rainforest, a ginger garden and an orchid garden. The tropical rainforest is one of among the only few pieces of original jungle left on the island and it’s reported to have more than 300 species of flora. The tallest trees stand about 40 metres in height.
This picturesque spot is not only a perfect location to view exotic plants, trees and flowers but also all kinds of colourful birds and insects. Among them are oriental pied hornbills, spotted wood owls, crimson sunbirds and stork billed kingfishers, thanks to the ponds and lakes which attract the birds to the area. Some geese, black swans and ducks have made the gardens their permanent home, too.
The popular National Orchid Garden has been part of the Singapore Botanic Gardens since 1859 and currently features 1,000 species and 2,000 hybrids but only 600 species and hybrids are exhibited but it still boasts the world’s biggest display of the tropical orchids. The adjacent ginger garden offers more than 250 species of attractive plants.
The best time to visit the gardens is early in the morning or late afternoon as it can be very hot during the day. The gate actually opens as early as 05:00 when many locals come to jog and perform tai-chi (the latter is a pretty interesting scene to observe). Many families also come here regularly to picnic, especially over the weekend. The entrance is free but there is a small fee to visit the orchid garden. Food and drink can easily be found on the garden grounds from the many restaurants and food court.

Orchard Road Info:
Orchard Road is a 2.2 kilometre-long major road in the Central Area of Singapore. Often known colloquially as Orchard, the area is a major shopping belt and tourist attraction. In the 19th century, Orchard Road got its name from the nutmeg, pepper and fruit orchards in the area. Currently, Orchard Road is a shopping and dining paradise, with over 5,000 establishments offering food, clothing, luxury goods to tourists and locals alike.
Singapore Botanic Gardens Info:
The Singapore Botanic Gardens is a 160-year-old tropical garden located at the fringe of Singapore's Orchard Road shopping district. It is one of three gardens, and the only tropical garden, to be honoured as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Botanic Gardens has been ranked Asia's top park attraction since 2013, by TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice Awards. It was declared the inaugural Garden of the Year, International Garden Tourism Awards in 2012, and received Michelin's three-star rating in 2008.
The Botanic Gardens was founded at its present site in 1859 by an agri-horticultural society. It played a pivotal role in the region's rubber trade boom in the early twentieth century, when its first scientific director Henry Nicholas Ridley, headed research into the plant's cultivation. By perfecting the technique of rubber extraction, still in use today, and promoting its economic value to planters in the region, rubber output expanded rapidly. At its height in the 1920s, the Malayan peninsula cornered half of the global latex production.
The National Orchid Garden, within the main gardens, is at the forefront of orchid studies and a pioneer in the cultivation of hybrids, complementing the nation's status as a major exporter of cut orchids. Aided by the equatorial climate, it houses the largest orchid collection of 1,200 species and 2,000 hybrids.
Early in the nation's independence, Singapore Botanic Gardens' expertise helped to transform the island into a tropical Garden City, an image and moniker for which the nation is widely known. In 1981, the hybrid climbing orchid, Vanda Miss Joaquim, was chosen as the nation's national flower. Singapore's orchid diplomacy honours visiting head of states, dignitaries and celebrities, by naming its finest hybrids after them; these are displayed at its popular VIP Orchid Gardens.
The Singapore's Botanic Gardens is opened from 5 a.m. to 12 midnight daily. There is no admission fee, except for the National Orchid Garden. More than 10,000 species of flora is spread over its 82-hectares area, which is stretched vertically; the longest distance between the northern and southern ends is 2.5 km (1.6 mi). The Botanic Gardens receives about 4.5 million visitors annually.

Singapore Botanic Gardens: A UNESCO World Heritage Site
Established in 1859, the Singapore Botanic Gardens played an important historical role in the introduction and promotion of many plants of economic value to Southeast Asia, including the Para rubber tree. Over the years, the Gardens has continued to introduce and rejuvenate its horticultural attractions while continuing its mission of connecting plants and people.
Today, the 74-hectare Gardens is a key civic and community space, and an international tourist destination. Attracting an annual visitorship of more than 4.4 million, it is also an important institution for tropical botanical and horticultural research, education and conservation.
The Gardens showcases the best and most spectacular of tropical flora, including more than 10,000 types of plants and the region’s most significant living collection of documented palms, orchids, cycads and gingers. Its historic 19th century garden landscape is well preserved and includes the earliest ornamental designed lake in Singapore. Home to numerous heritage trees and a tract of primary rainforest, the Gardens is less than a 10-minute walk from the shopping belt in Orchard Road. The Gardens was inscribed as Singapore’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015.
The Gardens was ranked the number one park in Asia in TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice Awards for attractions in 2014. In 2012, it clinched the inaugural Garden of the Year Award by the Canadian Garden Tourism Council. In 2008, it was awarded the Michelin three-star rating and selected by Time Magazine as Asia’s Best Urban Jungle.
The Singapore Botanic Gardens is managed by the National Parks Board.
