The Singapore River, which cuts through the heart of the city, was for many decades the main artery of trade and commerce for the British. Today, the stately Victorian and neo-classical Roman structures still stand proudly along the river banks, but they jostle for space with the many concrete-and-glass skyscrapers that have shot up in more modern times. The best way to view many of the buildings, statues, monuments and museums that Singapore has inherited from its colonial past is to take a walk along the Singapore River, or a river-boat tour that starts at Clarke Quay. This half-hour tour costs SG$ 9 per adult and SG$ 4 per child, and leaves at 09:00 - 23:00 daily. You will be brought along the Singapore River on an old bum-boat, the kind that used to navigate up and down the river in colonial times.
Most of the colonial buildings and monuments are on the north side of the river, the central Business District and its plethora of skyscrapers occupying the southern bank. Many of them are clustered around the City Hall and Raffles Place MRTs, so if you're taking a walk just exit from these stations. At the mouth of the Singapore River stands a statue of the Merlion, a half-lion, half-fish mythical beast that has come to symbolise Singapore. The Merlion, which spouts water from its mouth, has a (much larger) cousin in Sentosa Island. Heading upriver, you will see the historic Anderson and Cavenagh Bridges. Cavenagh Bridge, built in 1869 and now for pedestrians only, leads to Empress Place, which was named in honour of Queen Victoria. At Empress Place, you will find the elegant Victoria Concert Hall, where classical concerts by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra are held regularly.
There's also a cosy cafe here that's open throughout the day and serves good ol' Brit fare like fish and chips and chicken chops, besides local spring rolls and curry puffs. Next to the concert hall is Victoria Theatre, where local and foreign plays are a regular feature. Outside the theatre is a dark bronze cast statue of Stamford Raffles, officially unveiled in 1887. The imposing Empress Place building, built in1865, was once a court house and is now being refurbished to house the Second Wing of the Asian Civilisations Museum. Nearby, next to the river, is the spot where Raffles landed in Singapore. This event is commemorated by a another statue of Raffles, this time in white marble and built in 1972, set at the site where he first set foot on the island. Hugging the sides of the river are Boat Quay and Clarke Quay, which have experienced a renaissance in recent years. But while they were formerly streets teeming with sailors and coolies loaded with ships' cargo, today, the many godowns and shophouses that line the river have been renovated into trendy restaurants and bars.

My cruise down the Singapore River begins at Merlion Park. The cruise is conducted on one of the city's historic bumboats. Bumboats have been plying the Singapore River for more than a century. The Singapore river consist of 3 different quays, Boat Quay, Clarke Quay and Robertson Quay. Each quay has its own uniqueness, from its design to its history.

Amazing Singapore River Cleaning Boat - Trash Skimmer Boats - It seems that it is not that difficult to clear rubbish away from the surface of a lake, river, harbor or the sea for that matter. We were recently on a visit to Singapore and while sitting and relaxing at the Singapore River banks we saw some amazing Rubbish Collecting boats skimming leaves and garbage off the surface of the river. These Trash boats were extremely effective and it made us wonder why more countries do not use the Rubbish Skimming Boats to keep there waterways clean. This is the first time we have seen these boats but we have seen many polluted rivers, lakes and harbors around the word that would highly benefit from this kind of Trash Collection Boat.

The Singapore River
The Singapore River is a river in Singapore with great historical importance. It has an extraordinary story to tell about Singapore. The Singapore River flows from the Central Area, which lies in the Central Region in the southern part of Singapore before emptying into the ocean.
As the Central Area is treated as a central business district, nearly all land surrounding it is commercial. It is one of about 90 rivers in Singapore and its islands. It is the place where Raffles made the 1st trading port in Singapore. The Singapore River is the most famous river in Singapore.
The mouth of the Singapore River was the old Port of Singapore, being naturally sheltered by the southern islands. Historically, the city of Singapore initially grew around the port so the river mouth became the centre of trade, commerce and finance. To this day, area around the old Singapore River mouth, the Downtown Core, remains the most expensive and economically important piece of land in Singapore.
Singapore River is where the colourful and romantic history of the river and the myths and legends can still conjure up memories of the lighters, bumboats, tongkangs with their painted eyes to see the danger ahead and sampans of yesteryear. This is where the Malayan princes once sailed and this is where the bullock carts plodded their way up and down each bank as the river found its way to the former rocky river mouth. This is also where an early civilisation was conquered by the Javanese Majapahit Empire, in the year 1376.

River Valley is a planning area located within the Central Area of the Central Region of Singapore. The planning area shares boundaries with Orchard in the north, Museum in the east, Tanglin in the west and Singapore River in the south.
Tiong Bahru Market Singapore Info:
In 1955, the Tiong Bahru Market (Seng Poh Market) was constructed under the auspices of the National Environment Agency after some hawkers moved to an open area on Seng Poh Road.
The market was constructed of stalls with a simple wooden frame and zinc pitched roofs. Meats were hung without refrigeration. The Tiong Bahru market catered to the residents of the Tiong Bahru, Bukit Merah, and Henderson estates. Heritage street foods such as for mee, chwee kueh, Hokkien mee, pao, porridge, and roast pork were available in the market as well as a diverse number of goods for sale from textiles to flowers and many besides. bartering for the best price was common.
In 1993 and 2004, improvements were made to the market including a watertight roof, brighter lights, a broader walkway and garden lights. In 2004, the market was closed for two years for rebuilding. Stallholders were relocated to a temporary site on Kim Pong Road during this time. Kim Pong Road was named after Low Kim Pong (1837 – 1909) a local merchant and philanthropist, and the co-founder of the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce. In 2006, the new market opened. It was a concrete two storey structure with a wet market and retail stalls on the ground floor and upstairs, an area for hawkers. It remains a place of community heritage.
There are tours of the market, surrounding blocks of flats and the nearby WWII air raid shelters. In 2012, the National Heritage Board created an exhibition near the Tiong Bahru market to commemorate the battle for Singapore. Some, especially older residents and vendors, miss the vibrant atmosphere of the old market.

I am at Clark Quay. I found the Singapore River Cruise kiosk, which sells tickets for the river cruise. There was a line of tourists (I think from Germany) waiting for their boat. They were all part of the same tour group. A wonderful afternoon to take a river cruise. Hope they enjoyed the ride! Welcome to Singapore!

【Alexandria Canal】
Alexandra Canal is a 1.2-kilometer long functional and concrete canal in Singapore which stretches from Tanglin Road to Delta Road and Prince Charles Crescent. The canal has been converted into a recreational destination as a part of the Active, Beautiful and Clean (ABC) Water Programme undertaken by the Public Utilities Board of Singapore.
Reconstruction of Alexandra Canal between Tanglin Road and Kim Seng Road took place from 1997 to 2008 to improve the structural condition of the canal and to alleviate flooding in the catchment. A 200m stretch of the open waterway near Tanglin Road was decked over to create an interesting water cascade and water play area. The deck also provides a vantage point from which the public can have a clear view of the revitalised waterway downstream.

The Singapore River is approximately 3.2 kilometers long from its source at Kim Seng Bridge to where it empties into Marina Bay; the river extends more than two kilometers beyond its original source at Kim Seng Bridge as Alexandra Canal, as far as the junction of Commonwealth Avenue.
The mouth of the Singapore River was the old Port of Singapore, being naturally sheltered by the southern islands. Historically, the city of Singapore initially grew around the port so the river mouth became the centre of trade, commerce and finance.
At one time, Singapore River was the very lifeblood of the colony, the trade artery, the center of commercial activity, the heart of entrepot trade, the vessel of importance, the capillaries of life and the place which was frequented by the secret societies, the swaylos (Cantonese for coolies who worked on a boat) and the coolies who worked for the philanthropist Tan Tock Seng at Ellenborough Market and the towkay (Hokkien for business owner) Tan Kim Seng who was busy filling his godown with the riches of the East.

The diesel-powered engines of SRC's fleet made way for a new generation of electric ones that boast quieter engines and zero CO2 emissions. These are the very boats that operate along the Singapore River today. SRC is committed to greater excellence. Under its strong management, the company has developed a firm network of channel intermediaries from government agencies, embassies, event organizers and other operators in the tourism sector, both local and overseas. From a humble fleet of 4 bumboats in 1987, SRC has since increased its number to 24 today with a few new additions coming onboard soon.

Singapore Clarke Quay is a historical riverside quay in Singapore, located within the Singapore River Planning Area. The quay is situated upstream from the mouth of the Singapore River and Boat Quay.
The best attraction in Singapore Clarke Quay offer visitors a great range of alternative things to do and see that doesn’t purely revolve around nightlife. Sure, Singapore Clarke Quay is famous for its stunning waterside restaurants and exciting collection of bars and clubs, but the area has so much more to offer.
The Singapore River lies at the heart of the Clarke Quay, Providing the central artery for this area’s thriving nightlife scene. However, the river offers visitors much more than just a picturesque spot to come for food and drinks. Boat tours are available that cruise up and down the entire length of the river, taking advantage of all the interesting sights along the way, ending up in Singapore Clarke Quay, Boat Quay and eventually the Marina Bay. The river snakes under historically important bridges such as Clemenceau Bridge and Anderson Bridge, as well as passing important Singapore landmarks such as the Merlion and Esplanade on its way into the Singapore Strait.

The other major form of transportation within Singapore is MRT. The main island of Singapore is connected to the other islands by ferryboat services. There are two bridges which link Singapore to Malaysia. There is also a system of bus routes throughout the island, most of which have air conditioning units installed due to Singapore's tropical climate. Besides cash, a contactless smart card called the EZ-Link card can be used to pay bus and MRT fares. Public transport for tourists by Singapore Tourism Board and EZ-Link, the Singapore Tourist Pass offers unlimited travel for tourists to Singapore on Singapore's public transport system. For S$10 a day or S$20 for 3 days, and with S$10 deposit, tourists can take any number of rides on buses and trains operated by SBS Transit, MRT Buses and MRT Trains. The Singapore Cable Car, plies between Mount Faber on the main island of Singapore and the resort island of Sentosa.
The culture of Singapore is a combination of Asian and European cultures. Influenced by Malay, South Asian, East Asian, and Eurasian cultures, Singapore has been dubbed as a country where East meets West, Easy Asia and Garden city.
Singaporean cuisine is diverse and contains elements derived from several ethnic groups, as a result of its history as a seaport with a large immigrant population. Influences include the cuisines of the native Malays, the Chinese and the third largest ethnic group, the Indians as well as Indonesian, Peranakan a mix of Chinese and Malay cuisine and Western traditions. Influences from other regions such as Sri Lanka, Thailand and the Middle East are also present.
Singapore has four official languages: English, Malay, Chinese, and Tamil.

Clarke’s Quay is a pretty awesome place to hang out, we found a great place to eat and enjoy a beer while the children took some time to cool down in the water fountains!
