Laoag
After exploring Vigan half of my day was spent in Laoag city located in Ilocos Norte. Laoag is the drop-off point for those who ride an airplane going to this place. Famous landmarks and attractions are usually located not in the main city of Laoag. Paoay is the most active city in terms of tourists attraction for they have Paoay sand dunes, Lake, Museums and also worlds heritage landmark which is the Paoay Church. On this side trip, I was able to visit 2 locations which are the Sinking bell tower and the Paoay Church.
Ilocos famous Landmark is situated in the main city which is the Sinking bell tower, founded by Augustinian friars in the late 1600s. A 150-foot tower built by solid old fashioned rocks was believed that it was sinking an inch per year. Wanted to know why it was called as sinking bell, watch this video then.
Sinking Bell Tower of Laoag 2
This is the famous Sinking Bell Tower in Laoag, Philippines. The Sinking Bell Tower is a church building that was built by the Spanish a few hundred years ago. It is famous because it is slowly sinking into the ground. Each year less of it is visible, and eventually it will likely entirely disapear.

Laoag City, Philippines
The bell tower was presumably built after the 1707 earthquake. It withstood several minor earthquakes since completion, hence earning membership to the “Earthquake Baroque” styles architecture scholars label, along with several churched across the Philippines and Guatemala. It was locally constructed by Ilocano artisans who used bricks joined by molasses and leaves from a local plant named sablot. With a foundation of 90 meters and a height of 45 meters, it was a solid structure that towered over Ilocanos for centuries.
Maybe not for too long.
It is believed that the tower is sinking at a rate of an inch every year. There aren’t any conclusive scientific explanations to this, but one accepted theory is that because the tower was built on sandy land and considering its heavy and massive structure, this causes the whole tower to slowly bury itself into the ground.
Stories from the past tell of people mounted on horses being able to pass through the tower’s gates. However, if one visits the bell tower today, they would realize they would have to almost crawl through its gates to enter the bell tower. (Unfortunately, the city council strictly prohibits unauthorized entry into its prized history.)
Today, the bell tower also sinks in a figurative way. The booming city of Laoag continues to undergo tremendous structural changes. The cathedral itself was recently repainted beige and yellow (much to the locals’ dismay), but the old, gray sinking bell tower still stands, tarnished only by the passing of time. atlasobscura.com

Laoag City
Laoag City
The name Laoag comes from the word “light” since the region of Ilocos Norte is one of the sunniest regions in the country! This is mighty convenient seeing as how Laoag has tons of outdoor activities, both natural and manmade for locals and visitors to enjoy.
You’ll find plenty of outdoor activities in which to partake on the beach, in the water, and on the sand dunes! There are museums galore, a wide variety of restaurants, and of course, plenty of shopping in the form of malls and handicraft markets.
Sinking Bell Tower
St. William's Cathedral in Laoag City is famous for its Sinking Bell Tower. It is one of the things that will capture the attention of the tourists upon entering the city.
The 45-meter bell tower was built by the Augustinians in 1612 and believed to be the tallest bell tower in the Philippines. It is actually the bell tower of St. Williams Cathedral, but unfortunately, it is 85 meters away from the church. This is the farthest tower I’ve known from its church.
The bell tower is one of the landmarks of Spanish colony in the Philippines. The tower has earned its “sinking” reputation because it is so heavy and it was built on sandy foundations that it has been consistently sinking into the ground. One story said that when the bell tower was newly built, a person on horseback could enter the tower, but today a person with normal height has to bend first just to pass the entrance. Quite interesting But despite of this, the bell tower still continues its purpose of ringing the bell to call the Catholic brethren to mass.
