Island-Hopping Day 3: St. Maarten
Day 3
June 27, 2018
Come with us to beautiful St. Maarten. This is Part 3 of a 5-part video series. On Day 3, we started the day with some time on the beach at Simpson Bay Resort & Marina, then our family enjoyed a free bus trip into Philipsburg, sponsored by ama Jewelers, St. Maarten.
In this video, we take you along as we splash at the beach; encourage my 3-year-old as he writes the alphabet in the sand, despite the water repeatedly taking it away; we stroll through Philipsburg and catch a glimpse of cruise ships in port, feeding my inner cruise geek; we see the real-life Yoda Guy; visit the Guavaberry shop and treat ourselves to Guavaberry Coladas; and enjoy easygoing St. Maarten.
I know that this video does not share every single moment of our trip, and that’s because I truly do believe in the full experience of getting away and spending time with my family, so videotaping any at all is a stretch for me… which means that I will not always have a camera rolling. That being said, I hope that what we have captured and what we share with you here is inspiring and helpful. So, go on… plan your next family vacation, and enjoy!

More information about the video content bellow:
1. St. Martin is the smallest island in the world divided between two countries, France and the Netherlands. The northern French part of the island is known as St. Martin and is an overseas collectivity of France. The land mass of St. Martin is split roughly 60/40 with the larger French side covering about 20 square miles. There is no physical border between the two countries.
2. In 1493, explorer Christopher Columbus embarked on his second voyage to the New World on behalf of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella I of Spain. At Columbus' time, St. Martin was populated, if at all, by Carib amerindians. The Caribs' territory was not completely conquered until the mid-17th century when most of them perished in the struggle between the French, British, Dutch, Danes and Spanish for control of the West Indies islands around the Caribbean Sea. A massive influx of African slaves took place in the 18th century with the development of sugarcane plantations by the French and Dutch. On some of their territories the British imported Chinese and South Asians to take the place of slaves. Thus, St. Martin and the other islands are populated by a mixture of Amerindian, European, African, Indian and Asian peoples.
3. The division of the island between the Netherlands and France dates to March 23, 1648, under the Treaty of Concordia. Local folklore indicates that the division of land began with walking contest between a Frenchman and a Dutchman. Before they started, the Frenchman drank wine while the Dutchman drank the stronger jenever (Dutch gin), allowing the Frenchman to cover more territory and claim more land.
4. Marigot is the capital of the French side of Saint Martin.
5. Pic Paradis is the highest point (424m) on the island and affords a breathtaking view of the island. You can head to Loterie Farm where you can pick up a map or schedule a private, guided tour and hike your way to the top. The hike takes about 1.5 hours, after which you can relax by their beautiful spring-fed pool. If you’re lucky you might even catch a glimpse of the green monkeys that live in the forest there!
6. St.Maarten – St.Martin is 37 square miles of tropical paradise, and it also boasts 37 beaches! St. Martin's Dutch side is known for its festive nightlife, beaches, jewellery, drinks made with native rum-based guavaberry liquors, and casinos. The island's French side is known for its nude beaches, clothes, shopping (including outdoor markets), and French and Indian Caribbean cuisine. Shopping on St Maarten and Saint Martin offers duty-free goods in numerous boutiques. Most often the designer goods are offered at significant discounts, often up to 40% lower than EU retail prices.
7. The island is served by many major airlines that daily bring in large jet aircraft, including Boeing 747s and Airbus A340s carrying tourists from across the world. The short main runway at Princess Juliana International Airport, and its position between a large hill and a beach, causes some spectacular approaches. Aviation photographers flock to the airport to capture pictures of large jets just a few metres above sunbathers on Maho Beach. There is a small airport on the French side of the island at Grand Case, L'Espérance Airport for small aircraft serving neighbouring Caribbean islands.

Description
Things To Do in SAINT MARTIN - Best of Caribbean
You'll never run out of things to do in St Martin. St Martin or St Maarten beautiful beaches are wonderful for relaxing in the sand or playing in the waves. Home to busy resort beaches and secluded coves. Also known for fusion cuisine, vibrant nightlife and duty-free shops selling jewelry and liquor.
At once French and Dutch, lively and laid-back, graced with pretty beaches and rising to palm-studded hilltops, famed for its shopping and sweet guavaberry rums, seaside beach bars and casino-lead nightlife, there are many sides to little St. Martin.
One of the largest forts on the island, Louis was once the site of armed battles between the major European powers of the Caribbean, and today some rusting cannons can still be seen peppering the lookouts. But it’s the panoramas that really draw the crowds, sweeping out for 180-degrees across Marigot harbour and the hills above Bellevue, encompassing the deep-blue ocean and even the silhouette of Anguilla Island in the distance when the skies are clear.
Maho Beach is a beach on the Dutch side of the Caribbean island of Saint Martin, in the territory of Sint Maarten. It is famous for being adjacent to the Princess Juliana International Airport and is a popular site for tourists and plane watchers, who visit the beach to watch aircraft on final approach landing at the airport, passing only a short distance above their heads.

ST. Martin trip #4meet Nicki
St Maarteen
St. Maarten is an island with a split personality, thanks to an international border between its two sides: Dutch St. Maarten to the south, French St. Martin to the north. Its capital, Philipsburg - a popular stop for cruise ships - began as a Dutch trading center, and forts around the city are reminders of its strategic importance in St. Maarten's history. Fort Amsterdam, built in 1631, was the first Dutch military outpost in the Caribbean; the Spanish captured the fort soon after it was completed and kept it until 1648, when they abandoned it. Fort Willem, today topped by a television transmission tower, is great for a hike.
Today tourism is king; bustling Front Street in Philipsburg beckons bargain hunters with 500 duty-free shops. There are 36 sugary sand beaches to visit; one favorite strip is Cupecoy Bay Beach near the Dutch-French border, and windsurfers head to busy Maho Bay Beach, located near the airport. One of St. Maarten's more private strands is Simpson Bay Beach. Simpson Bay Lagoon is enclosed, making the water a natural for water skiing. Dawn Beach, Oyster Pond and Guana Bay are favorites for snorkeling and windsurfing.
