Scenic drive through Sintra, Sintra Municipality, Lisbon Region, Portugal
On our first day in Portugal, we decided to go out of Lisbon to the lovely, old, quaint town of Sintra.
Unfortunately, as it was pouring with rain, a drive though the town seemed like a good idea - and to get our bearings.
Sintra is a town in Sintra Municipality in Portugal, located in the Grande Lisboa subregion and the Lisbon Region. The town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site on account of its 19th century Romantic architecture. It has a population of c. 33,000inhabitants.

Cascais/Estoril/Sintra

Mysterious Sintra Lisbonhost.wmv
Lisbonhost will take you to discover Sintra. A fabulous city and has a lot to offer! People say that Sintra has a unique mystical spirit that attracts artists and writers from all over the world. And its nature is fantastic! In 1995, due to its cultural landscape, it was classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. According to UNESCO, the cultural landscape of the Serra and the town of Sintra represents a pioneering approach to Romantic landscaping that had an outstanding influence on developments elsewhere in Europe. It is a unique example of the cultural occupation of a specific location that has maintained its essential integrity as the representation of diverse successive cultures. Its structures harmonize indigenous flora with a refined and cultivated landscape created by man as a result of literary and artistic influences... lisbonhost.com

A Visit to Charming Sintra: A UNESCO Site
Sintra is not far from Lisbon and an easy day trip from the capital. One short hour on our own in Sintra left only a taste and longing to return to this gorgeous, once royal resort town.
Why are the most charming tour stops always the shortest?

Travel Tip: Visit Sintra in Portugal
This place has the most epic castle on a hill on a mountain and a private residence of an extremely wealthy Portuguese family (once members of the ‘freemasons society’) which is now publicly accessible, and both creepy and spectacular.

Pena Palace Sintra Portugal filmed in 360
When going to Portugal and visiting Lisbon you should spend one day and take the train to Sintra where you can find many castles and palaces.
Here is the the Pena Palaces interior filmed with my 360 camera.
SINTRA - Sintra is a resort town in the foothills of Portugal’s Sintra Mountains, near the capital, Lisbon. A longtime royal sanctuary, its forested terrain is studded with pastel-colored villas and palaces. The Moorish- and Manueline-style Sintra National Palace is distinguished by dramatic twin chimneys and elaborate tilework. The hilltop 19th-century Pena National Palace is known for a whimsical design and sweeping views.
PENA PALACE - The Pena Palace is a Romanticist castle in São Pedro de Penaferrim, in the municipality of Sintra, on the Portuguese Riviera. The castle stands on the top of a hill in the Sintra Mountains above the town of Sintra, and on a clear day it can be easily seen from Lisbon and much of its metropolitan area.

Eléctrico de Sintra
Sintra to Praia das Maçãs on the vintage interurban tramway.
The car used was 'Cross Bench' No 6.
This video is in 'real time'.
The trip is about 40 minutes, which is a long run for a 100+ year old tram, and the €3 fare for a one way trip is good value.
The little 4 wheel tram can only hold approx 30 passengers. There were no signs to the Sintra station and the tourist loop buses don't go to it's station. Given the limited capacity of the trams this is probably just as well.
The only down side of the operation is the excessive amount of flange squeal in the many curves.
