Visiting Pena Palace | Day Trip to Sintra from Lisbon, Portugal
Join us as we visit Pena Palace on a day trip to Sintra from Lisbon, Portugal. Traveling to Sintra from Lisbon is as easy as can be with frequent trains departing from Rossio station in central Lisbon making a 30-40 minute journey to Sintra, Portugal. We paid 5 Euros for a our ticket and hoped on the next train departing shortly after we arrived at the station. Before we did any sightseeing, as per our usual style, we grabbed a quick bite at Café Saudade where we had scrumptious paninis and a couple of local desserts (queijada and travesseiro). We'd highly recommend this place as the prices were very reasonable and the quality of food was excellent.
After it was time to figure out how we'd visit the attraction we came all the way to Sintra to visit - Pena Palace! After checking several options we realized the local bus was the cheapest option (5.50 Euros for a return trip) and so we hopped on bus number 434.
After arriving at Pena Palace we paid 11.50 Euros each for an adult ticket and my parents got a senior discount at 9 Euros per person. Firstly we toured the exterior of Pena Palace where we we marvelled at the bright colors and various influences in terms of its eclectic architecture. We also had wonderful views over Sintra and especially of the Moorish Castle. Afterwards we walked around inside before calling it a day. Overall, we'd say it would take around an hour to three hours to check this place out thoroughly. It is bigger than it looks from a lower vantage point.
And that was our day! Visiting Sintra to properly check out the town and other attractions warrants an overnight stay and with just an afternoon to spare we really only focussed on Pena Palace. However, if you're looking for an interesting day trip from Lisbon we'd highly recommend considering Sintra. Ciao for now!

Visiting Pena Palace on a day trip to Sintra, Portugal Travel Video Transcript:
But you guys know the drill. First things first, we needed to grab a quick bite. We spotted a cafe serving up pastries, paninis, and all sorts of baked goods, and that was all the convincing we needed.
With our appetites satiated, we continued our stroll through town, and then decided we should probably hop on a bus, and save our legs for visiting the attraction that brought us all the way out here: the Pena Palace.
Once we reached the gates of the Pena Palace we purchased our tickets, and began the climb to this colourful, whimsical, and somewhat kitschy construction set atop a hill in the Sintra Mountains.
Though Pena Palace’s history dates back to the Middle Ages, what you see today dates from the 19th century, with construction of the current castle completed in 1854.
You may think that this place looks like a mish-mash of different styles, and that’s because Pena Palace is a Romanticist castle, that was influenced by Gothic, Manueline, Moorish and Renaissance architecture.
The commission for this castle was given to a German amateur architect, and the King’s only request was that “this palace should reflect an opera” - whatever that means.
The tour of the interior of the palace followed a carpeted-route that guided us through a chapel, bedrooms, dining rooms, living rooms, and a kitchen - all decorated with historical furniture to reflect how it would have looked when the Portuguese royal family lived here before their escape to Brazil during the revolution.
Then we stopped for one more glimpse of the surrounding hills, and it was time to head back down.
And yes, that’s all we did in Sintra that day: ate lunch, rode a bus, and visited one palace. We’re not kidding about maybe coming here for 2-3 days, because there’s way more to cover than you can on a day trip!
This is part of our Travel in Portugal video series showcasing Portuguese food, Portuguese culture and Portuguese cuisine.

Portugal - Sintra
The Cultural Landscape of Sintra is no. 723 on UNESCO's World Heritage List. There are many palaces scattered around in the Sintra area, and one will have a hard time reaching them all. Most tourists will do the same we did: Start at the National Palace in the town centre, take a bus (no 434) uphill to the Moorish castle and then board the same bus further uphill to the fantastic Pena Palace.

Day trip to Sintra- Moorish Castle
Sintra
Welcome to varshastravel360
Our day trip to Sintra exploring the Moorish castle
From the train station, we took bus number 434 and arrived here in Sintra center. We spent some time here before going to the castle.
The first prominent attraction in this square is the National Palace of Sintra. It is now converted into a museum and is worth visiting.
After this palace, we wandered around these narrow, winding lanes of the town.
There are some shops along the lanes. Outside one wine shop, I found this map of Portugal showing various wine specialities from different regions.
We also came across this tourist train. We did not take it but if you are here with kids, they will definitely enjoy a ride on this tiny train.
Then we catch the same bus 434 and reached the Moorish castle entrance. One can buy the entrance tickets here or down in the city center at the tourist office.
We purchased it at the tourist office to avoid lines here.
There is a small walk cum hike up to the castle and I am already enjoying the views from here.
On the way, there are some ruins of ancient Moorish settlement and these are well marked by such information boards.
After about 15 min walk from the bus stop, we reached the castle courtyard.
Let’s walk along the fortification for some amazing views.
Look at this, isn’t it fascinating? That's the Atlantic Ocean at the distance and this is view is stunning.
The location of this castle is so strategic that one can keep watch on all sides up to long distances.
See this 360-degree view. This is towards the ocean, I think Lisbon is far behind somewhere this side and this is Pena palace.
If you like such uninterrupted views you must visit the Moorish castle.
Thanks for watching. Do not forget to subscribe to Varshastravel360 for more such videos.
Until next video
Bye bye from Varsha

Portugal Sintra, A Fairy Tale Town
This is Sintra, a mysterious place in Portugal just outside of Lisbon
Links to the locations and more about the prices below ↓↓↓
As we have been traveling through Portugal the past few weeks, we decided to stop in Sintra, just half an hour away from Lisbon to shoot a video about Quinta da Regaleira, a very unique place in Europe.
We were in Sintra for nearly a week. The city seems very small on the map but if you want to see each castle and its surrounding gardens and walk through the city also, while having some time to breath and have a relaxed meal, making it all in a day is impossible.
Here is a link to the city's official travel site ( this is where we took most of our information)
EXPLORE...
Food:
What you need to try while in Portugal :
Bacalhau, which is a codfish dish with which the Portuguese are ABSOLUTELY OBSESSED!
Alheira de Mirandela, which is a sausage stuffed with bread and very cheap. Doesn’t sound like much, but give it a try, you’ll probably like it!
Pastel de nata, well what can I say, I am obsessed with pastries so this is a MUST. They have a lot more than this one, but if you’re not into sweets, please give this one a try *hint* it’s crunchy and creamy at the same time, so yeah, deliciooous!
As for places to eat, we heard that these one are really good (as I have mentioned earlier I was too full after eating too many pastries to try to stop for a full meal)
Curral dos Caprinos
AZENHAS DO MAR - this one has also a gorgeous view just by the ocean
Culture: How to act like a local
Hike, go to cafes and enjoy the gardens. Really the locals here really take advantage of the beautiful free gardens surrounding the castles.
Nightlife: When and where to go…
Yeah, about that… if you’re a city person I would say there is nothing here that qualifies as a real club so heading back to Lisbon seems worth it if you wanna party.
Nature: Wildlife, parks, and beaches
THIS IS THE PLACE FOR IT.
Sintra has both forest and beaches. The beach is gorgeous and relaxing, but you can find that outside of Sintra also. If you come here save your time for the gardens and the castles. Let yourself enjoy the royal palaces for a while, it is said to bring harmony into one's heart, why else would the royal family come here so often?
Transport:
There are three ways to move around: bus, tuk-tuk or walk. The bus is the cheapest but takes an incredible amount of time, so go for the tuk-tuk if you don’t feel like walking for hours. We really enjoyed the walk, but we had a lot of time on our hands.
Budget:
This is a very cheap place to visit, depending on your accommodation choices. Quinta da Regaleira is the cheapest one to visit and most fun because is more of an adult mystery house, but the others are equally beautiful just slightly pricier. With a minimum of 27 euros and a maximum of 120 euros, the accommodation really makes a difference. The season your are visiting can also play a big part in this, plan ahead- that always saves money! Purchasing tickets online saves you 5%.

Castles of Sintra - Portugal Vlog
We left Aveiro early in the morning to head to Lisbon. Once we arrived it was time to head to the train station and catch the train to Sintra. The return train ticket to Sintra only cost 5€. When we arrived to Sintra we took the bus all the way up to Pena Palace. There is a shuttle bus going to all of the Palaces (434-tourist bus) and a return ticket costs 6.90€. My biggest advise for visiting the palaces of Sintra is to decide which ones you want to visit beforehand and book your tickets online ( You also receive a discount when purchasing the tickets online. A combined ticket for visiting Pena Palace and the Moorish Castle cost 20€. Peak season opening hours are 09:30 to 19:00.
